Please help me see the Horde side of BfA

I’ve struggled to see the Horde side as I play BfA. How do you get into your characters head and see why the Horde is right in attacking Kul Tiras, etc?

I love Horde. In every xpac until now I could see their side - even when Garosh went dark. But this time they just feel freaking evil. The Horde Chief burned innocents in Teldrassil. I am getting my daily quests from Nathanos Blightcaller and that dude does not make me feel like I am doing the right thing. And knowing Kul Tiras from the Ally side I struggle to see why I am stomping through these nice farms killing people. I feel like I should be stabbing Blightcaller - I mean my god - isn’t that the obvious thing to do? He’s a creepy psychopath.

I think Queen Talanji is more of the old Horde. I totally see her side. She has honor and is defending her people. She cares who lives and dies. But I see Sylvanas and Blightcaller much more often.

I like to feel the story. So help me see why my Blood Elf Hunter is listening to Blightcaller and slaughtering farmers all over Kul Tiras

Thanks for helping me dive into the lore guys. If there are cutscenes on YouTube or anything to read that might help I’m all ears.

Well…basically, you’ve got the right idea already. Since there are two canon sides to the Horde right now it’s basically up to you to choose which side you/your character identifies with, and for what reasons.

If you think that everything that Sylvanas/Blightcaller have led the Horde into this expansion is wrong, then that means that you’re probably one of the dissidents that’s siding with the other members of the Horde who dislike the path that we’re headed down (e.g. Saurfang, Baine, etc…)

If you want story reasons as to why someone like that still has to play nice with Sylvanas and Blightcaller, I’d say it’s just to maintain the facade until the conflict comes to a head, or something along those lines.

If you want a good reason for supporting the Horde as a blood elf against Kul Tiras then you just have to remember one thing: Jaina is from there. Yes, the Jaina that (at least from the perspective of blood elves) slaughtered and imprisoned the innocent Sunreavers after the Divine Bell incident. The same Jaina that abandoned all of Azeroth in a fit because other Archmages of the council let the Horde back into Dalaran to help save the world. The Jaina who now returns with the ability to make a freaking ship fly and blast cities with magic canon balls. And now, that same Horde hating woman, who from Horde perspective never faced any repercussions for destroying developing relations between Silvermoon and Stormwind, is moving to get yet another army to try and destroy the Horde with.

As a Blood Elf you are looking at the possibility of our races being wiped out if Jaina is allowed to continue gaining power. She obviously had Varian in her pocket, who’s to say Anduin won’t be the same? We are fighting for our own survival, because if we don’t we will all die.

At least, that’s how my elves are looking at the situation right now.

I’m just a rookie in the RP atmosphere. I just want to say that it’s a ruse. You’re following orders, without question. I could imagine a partial bit of fear playing into this, but I’ll stick with the ruse option understanding the role you play assisting with the rescue of Baine, which was ordered by Lor’Themar.

The fear aspect draws from the beginning of BfA. Post-Argus, Gallywix gave the azerite to Sylvanas, Sylvanas says “This changes everything,” and goes completely bat crazy. She absolutely destroyed two cities beyond repair. One being of her own people, in which she drops Chernobyl on everything, indiscriminately. You’re the closest neighbor and now the only Horde stronghold in the Eastern Kingdoms. You’ve literally seen this destruction before, many times. You put up walls and barriers and they’ve fell under like circumstances. Just saying. Fear is definitely a topic. Not fear as in cowardice. Fear as in preservation.

Obviously Lor’Themar’s orders in Nazjatar, previously mentioned, were below the radar. At least that’s how I’d perceived them. So basically, my opinion is that the Blood Elves are just playing along until a clear and safe outcome for their people presents itself.

Dragoness makes several good points on why a blood elf might be okay with what the Horde is doing in the war so far. There are many reasons why Horde characters might choose to support the Horde’s war effort. However, there are also many reasons why Horde characters might be against it as well(see Saurfang, Baine, and co). Those who are against the war may also be forced to support it on a superficial level, at least, to avoid being shunned and possibly killed by their peers.

Do keep in mind though, that what happens in the quests and what your character actually does are separate things entirely. The in-game quests are written with the Champion of Azeroth in mind; that is, the quests are merely there as a vehicle to tell the expansion’s story to the playerbase(the majority of which do not RP), and nothing more. The quests can serve as handy guides or inspiration for paths your character might take, but ultimately, your character’s views and actions are for you and you alone to decide.

Awesome! Thank you so much guys. I have only seen Jaina from the Alliance side. I’m going to read up on some of this to see what she did to the Horde.

Thanks! The game is a little deeper now for me and this makes me happy

Horde today reminds me of old Horde. Pre-WoD.

Pretty much this,we get little nuggets here and there from those opposing Sylvanas [which at this point appears to be 80-90 ish percent of the horde leaders] such as Saurfang doing his thing and bringing Thrall into the fold,Baine’s decision to turn Jaina’s brother over to her leading to his unjust arrest and soon [spoiler alert bar]

Summary

Lorthemar’s group of resistance fighters.

Plus let’s be real here, wanna side with the resistance who are willing to fight to keep their freedom and restore their honor or fight for a self serving crazy lady who goes so far as to kill her own men, raise them with no free will to be cannon fodder?

I think that’s the beauty of this expansion. There is so much that could be speculated as foreshadowing and basically you could be rolling the dice either way.

Hell, it’s almost like a legal hearing. Go back over all the evidence and answer the question after you’re well prepared. I just want to point out that Baine and Saurfang were having a conversation while Sylvanas was behind closed doors with Gallywix. I can’t quote it off the top of my head, but what he said made it seem as if they were conspiring against the warchief even before the events at Teldrassil.

It could really swing either way.
