Please have somebody else design Sentinel

2/3 hunter hero trees BORING to death

I don’t care if they will end up strong numerically

At least one should be FUN

Well, since the beginning im excited about sentinel…let see how it goes

This is just speculation that it will be as lackluster as some others.

This is a case of a designer who plays a spec being able to design talents versus a designer making choices that are safe.

I used to joke about it, but now I seriously think blizzard has 0 idea what to do with the hunter class as a whole and now we’re looking at 2/3 of our trees being completely underwhelming/boring.

Hero talents aside there are still so many glaring issues with the class and all we get are band-aid fixes that do nothing to work on those issues.

But hey maybe we can get another 10% to rapid fire and 20% to BM kill shot that no one takes, Suuuurely that will solve all our problems :upside_down_face:

Hero tree talents should feel thematic and impactful. All I’m seeing for most of these is percentages. These look incredibly fun…

If you’re really into Excel.

Anyone got a thematic and featural wishlist for it?

Yea Do not mention the word’s sentinel owl once

I know they will add something to do with the sentinel owl simply because sentinel is in the name but I really really hope they don’t. Unless they just completly rework the whole thing from the ground up the last thing I want is to have them build even a 1/3 of the tree with the sentinel owl as some priority.

Honestly I would be shocked if there is actually a dedicated person in charge of the hunter class/talents. I would be even more shocked if they were an active employee for the duration of this expansion because if so that is the craziest example of paycheck theft I’ve ever seen.

After seeing the other 2, I’m praying sentinel provides some real value and synergy to SV lol, pack leader was a real let down

I was pretty hopeful at least 1 tree would play with the idea of better / mechanically updated dps traps, some stuff to synergise with bombs etc… but the name sentinel doesn’t inspire much confidence

wowpedia dot fandom dot com/wiki/Sentinels

The lore lends itself to some really nice potential abilities. I can’t say I would like to have much more to do with traps and the lore doesn’t lend itself but maybe a little.

" Members of the Sentinel Army can be proficient in a wide variety of skills, from [nightsaber] and [hippogryph] riding to the use of siege weaponry. As such, the army is able to fill many unique roles on the battlefield. Primary examples of these include:

  • [Archers]compose the first rank of the Sentinel army. These night elves are expert marksmen and use the concealing forests of [Kalimdor] to their advantage. Their lightning-quick ambushes are legendary, for few warriors can match the proud archers’ speed and cunning. These are the basic sentinel type, and have formed a key part of kaldorei armies since the days of the [War of the Ancients]
  • [Huntresses] are the elite cadre of the Sentinel army. Drawing their strength from the moon goddess, [Elune], these warrior women ride the feral [nightsaber] panthers into battle. Huntresses are strong and swift, and merciless to those who would defile the sanctity of the forests. Huntresses also have a close bond with the [owls] of the forest. These owls relay information and spy for the Sentinel army. They are the [mounted warrior] version of sentinels, and often act as heavy shock troops.
  • [Hippogryph riders] provide aerial support in battle, as well as scouting and reconnaissance. Hippogryph-mounted sentinels usually act as airborne archers, and form an effective mobile rapid-response unit.
  • [Glaive throwers] serve as the main siege weapon of the Sentinels, and can be operated by a single individual. Hurling imposing metal glaives across large distances, they can be used to punch through even the toughest of fortifications. Glaive throwers can also be turned to the skies as an effective anti-air deterrent.[[67]]

Some ideas…
PVE/PVP
-Haste, crit and dodge bonus (esp vs single target ie ‘expert marksman’)
-Bonus to pet damages (or lone wolf)
-Armor bonus
-Elune’s blessing name tbd (focus generation bonus)
-Some ability that uses Elune’s divine magic for ranged damage or nature magic perhaps in lieu of arcane shot

PVP primary PvE limited use case:
-Enhanced camo lasts until cancelled or castable in combat or difficult to hit after fading similar to rogue
-Ability to mount/ride in combat similar to pallies (ie an escape)
-Ability to fire from mounted maybe to some extent (OP?)

Just some that come to mind that could be thematic and could use existing code generally (I think). I am more concerned about getting the damage numbers up TBH. MOAR POWAR.

The only amount you should ever expect from Sentinel is what damage increases Dark Ranger and Pack Leader give to each of their specs. All else should be handled baseline.

Ngl, my (dead from work) brain is basically just stuck on a combination of Night Elf tactics, general outrider / guerilla tactics, and The Last Epoch’s Falconer…

Biggest problem I’m having, though, is just the amount of reworks to Hunter itself (and, oddly enough, perhaps to Stealth mechanics in general) that would situate it far better.

Background Changes:

  • Watchful Owl is now a choice node with Night Hawk. Both are now 2-minute psuedo-CDs, consuming 20 seconds’ of charge on activation and another 10 seconds for each second thereafter.
    • Owl reveals, allows attacks without needing line of sight, and gives Avoidance and Dodge against marked enemies.
    • Hawk obscures vision and thereby prevents ranged attacks onto allies through the area of effect’s perimeter. (In PvP, also occludes allies’ vision, too.)

What Sentinel would offer:

  • Bonuses for marking/detecting enemies??
  • Upgrades Watchful Owl to Sentinel Owl and Night Hawk to Storm Crow, increasedly powerful utility skills, or grants them Focus-based CDR.
  • Replaces Multi-shot and Carve with a glaive-throw that deals diminishing damage per target struck but starts off nearer to Arcane Shot damage. 2 charges. Not affected by Ranger. Can take a choice node later to have its increase damage per enemy struck and increase its target cap based on the number of enemies hit with Trick Shots or WFB.
  • A choice-node giving the option of optimizing off whom you bounce the glaives for strikes against the enemy on whom it ends (causing it to sweep back the other way) or… something similar-ish. Other choice node avoids that added complexity but should be slightly inferior since it’d be easier.
  • Some sort of mechanic by which to fade into the shadows and have bonus cast, attack, and movement speed — fading quickly and linearly upon next special attack — and/or have flat bonus %AP on next strike (scaling with the attack’s amplifiers). This doesn’t provide full stealth (at least until 3s later), but does break enemy targeting.
  • Set two positions on the ground. A falcon (replaceable in appearance with a stabled flying pet) will swoop through the area, knocking enemies backwards at diminishing amounts and causing a 8s bleed. oGCD. Simulcastable.
  • Can take a choice node to repeat Falcon Rush multiple times, still oGCD, but it is now targeted and the first attack comes from your position, while each successive attack comes from its previous ending point.
  • Outrider. Replaces Aspect of the Cheetah. Summon a [racially appropriate mount] to move at [ground mount] speed for 4 seconds. The mount continues charging forward thereafter, trampling engaged enemies in its path. You continue moving at +60% speed after dismounting, decaying to +30% over 6 seconds.
  • Bonus crit chance for 5 seconds after first attacking an enemy. Bonus Haste and movement speed upon using Kill Shot or killing an enemy.
  • Hunter’s Mark is now oGCD, has a second charge, and gives a chance to cause the enemy to take bonus Arcane damage. (WIP; boring.)
  • Summon a Decoy when using Feign Death, who mimics your health and debuffs (diverting your periodic and AoE damage taken to it) and can move about in your place until you cancel Feign Death —OR— During Feign Death, gain increased Avoidance and heal over time, and fade into shadows.
  • For 6 seconds after using Harpoon or Disengage, you may freely use it one more time.
  • < WIP > (I mean, obviously; this is a thematically incohesive and lackluster mess for the moment.)

That was the context of what I meant but it’s also the easiest to implement. We just need to get our 3 percent MM/SV guy a little drunk or something.

Some really great ideas in your list as usual. Didn’t even thing about doing anything with Hunter’s mark. Feign death decoy would be funny. Look at you with your PvP ideas!

WoW devs are obsessed with numbers and percentages more then design. They are constantly working on abilities without doing much to the visual aspect.

Its because they cater to raiders and people obsessed with stating. Dont forget when we saw ions shaman he didnt even use any transmog and had mixed gear pieces.

With how much the community has to shout for new custimization while the legendary axe gets more stat adjustments then anything its not surprising they take hero talents in the same light.

Hero talents are just new talent tree options. They arent as distinct as their fantasy or cosmetic at all.

Issue is, some of the hero trees are actually amazing, so it is possible.

Simply don’t let the same designer ruin Sentinel

yeah, a ton of people are dooming about hero trees but a fair few of them are actually really cool AND sound like they could be pretty strong… hunter ones are just unfortunately not anywhere near any of those lol

I’d find it hard to believe that these different class designers have even met each other let alone ever talked together about what they were making with how cool and strong some of these sound and how boring and terrible others sound. You’d think they’d have meetings occasionally to check in on each others ideas and try to bring everything up to a certain level of coolness but nope lol

We will problably get a new button called “throw glaive” that will give us passive damage on other skills. Every addition will be ranged related, since sentinel will share sv and mm

I also expect glaive/physical dmg/bleed thematic and the utility being stealth/sentinel owl/trap related

But whatever it is, it can’t be worse than dark ranger’s aimed shot reset mechanic, so I’ll be playing Sentinel as a PVP MM Hunter

Dam it would be so upsetting if all they do with sentinel is give it a throw glaive upgrade.

Im kinda expecting some nature magic\elune magic hunter stuff imo
