Please Get Rid of Gear to Save WoW

Hello. I have played this game for a long time, and each patch, I see my mythic raider guildies get better gear from a world quest. This is sad to me, and I dislike it. I would like equipment to be removed from the game; it makes no sense that one pair of gloves can give you 20000 hp, but another gives you four armor (big whoop!), and both can look like anything.

I am asking to remove the gear. I don’t want to have to work so hard for something just to have a functional item level for a minute and a half. Of course, we would still keep transmog things, but gear needs to be put on the back-burner. Maybe weapons can stay though. I would like my artifact weapon to be competitive again on all of my characters.

I know this sounds like another, “stop it with the hamster wheel” post, and it is, but I have a solution! Just remove gear (and keep transmog), and boom we are done!

I commented this and I just want to put it up here so people can relate.
“Everybody, at some point, has had a tougher time in PvP because they didn’t have the best “gear.” Everybody who raids has had trouble getting into groups because their gear wasn’t high enough. Everybody has felt disappointment when replacing their legendaries with quest items. I stand for this and I’d like gear gone, it’s ruining WoW.”

This is not a troll post. Grinds are fun when they’re not forced. What’s the point in gearing up now? We’ll get the equivalent of 550 ilvl gear this coming xpac in the first few quests.

Take some time to explain character power progression under this no gear model.

I’m curious to see how you plan to work that out.

Good question: the answer is no more of that nonsense. Power progression makes no sense to me because why is it hard for us to kill a level 120 moose but we can 1 shot Archimonde? I do not have an answer for that! We should one shot the moose and 50 shot Archimonde, regardless of level or gear. I hope this clarifies!

Couldn’t you have tried a little harder with this bait? A few more paragraphs and everyone in GD would probably fall for it.

It doesn’t, because current content is a thing and power progression is necessary for raid/dungeon/PvP structure.

If this is bait, it’s not terribly good bait. You should at least have some kind of ridiculous contingency plan beyond, ‘scrap it,’ if you expect to really take someone for a ride.

It is not bait, I want gear to go and this is the place to bring it up.

To be fair, it totally could be some person actually advocating for this. I’ve seen people unironically advocate for this in-game. But it is way more likely to me at least that it is GD being GD.

Yeah, I guess. People should get a buff for all the things they’ve killed, and the harder content gives more power points or whatever it is that you are looking for. I just want to enjoy the game with no gear stopping me.

That is really not that much different from gearing. You’re just swapping items for AP.

I don’t know where else to post this. It’s general to everybody. Everybody, at some point, has had a tougher time in PvP because they didn’t have the best “gear.” Everybody who raids has had trouble getting into groups because their gear wasn’t high enough. Everybody has felt disappointment when replacing their legendaries with quest items. I stand for this and I’d like gear gone, it’s ruining WoW.

And Ohgodmyeyez, you are so right. Ideally, there would just be none of that, and people would play because the fights are fun and achievements still exist.

I thought you were a troll, but I happen to agree. Retail WoW is the only game I know where they give you power and then take it away.

Gear is transient. A means to an end. WoW’s gameplay doesn’t necessarily prioritize skill over gear, and sometimes a skilled player will find themselves hitting a wall they can’t climb over without the gear.

Cooldown style combat isn’t Dark Souls combat. When you boil things down to just being stat templates, what would be the point of playing? Even first person shooters have means to reward time investment, skill, and the like.

Power progression is absolutely necessary for this type of game. While there are certainly forms of it coughCORRUPTIONScough that suck and should disappear, there needs to be a power curve over the course of an expansion.

This is not functionally different from gear-based scaling, which was tried and pretty universally hated. Characters need to gain an appreciable amount of strength over time in order for the player to feel a sense of progress.

That’s what you believe, and I hear you. I like getting an upgrade. However, the upgrade isn’t why I play, the fun content is! I think it would really help PvP to get rid of all of that too.

Sorry,I don’t get it you have wq gear on right as of now.Are you saying you want to get rid of your gear?

This is my main character, for reference. I would like to enjoy the content and not have so many grinds before I get to it. I don’t do anything really out there (no mythic raids, what have you), because people aren’t there to save Azeoroth, but to get loot, and that makes me sad.

You need a reward structure in games. Games without a reward system tend to die off very fast.

What you have mentioned so far are two completely different issues that you seem to compare as the same.

You say it sucks to replace high quality legendary gear with quest items.

You also say that gear prevents people from getting into raid groups.

These are not similar situations and to blame gear existing as the reason is flat out wrong.

I’m sure you dont like to see greens that are better than your epic gear. It doesnt bother me but that’s a fair point. Removing gear might actually solve this because the replacement system would still provide power, but not in the form of colored gear.

People being refused from raiding groups based on gear however is not an issue of gear itself but people vetting players based on available data. Even if you remove gear, therr will always be a way to measure people (probably a not ideal system).

By the gods no it would not help PVP, by the seven hells having gear not matter in pvp is the worst thing you can do. Legit gear is what helps those classes that aren’t performing well in the PVP meta. But when you take gear out of the equation basically all you will have winning is the class that is currently FOTM. So all this advocates for is people to switch to FOTM for pvp over and over again. So please no.

I think op has a point to a degree, like how some mythic trinkets in EP still out do all mythic content in today’s current raid.

I feel like they’ve gone backwards a bit.

Sounds like GW2 is your game OP but raids and dungeons kinda suck there with do or die mechanics, or are negligible.
