The damage hard stops once it’s outside the like 5ft range we have. Not all tanks communicate when their moving.
The point is: boss moved outside my small range window and my damage stops. Ranged are undefeated.
You also have movement tools to compensate when you need to move. Blink while casting, ice flows, spirit walkers grace, numerous high damage dots, instant cast spells, spells that can be cast while moving, etc… most ranged classes have access to at least 1 of these.
Ranged life is just easier than melee life.
According to blizz, part of our fantasy is being a juggernaut. If that means we can’t have high mobility then we need something to let us hit out target when out of range.
So unless they intend on improving our mobility then our range should stay.

Melee usually end up having to chase after a boss if they don’t know/aren’t paying attention to mechanics. Most bosses have obvious telegraphs that indicate they’re about to move/be moved. Or the tank is being weird. That’s all player issue though; not a melee design issue.

Got to say though, I absolutely loooooove avoiding mechanics while still hitting my target.
So unless we get wings of liberty, we best keep this.

You should be able to follow the boss even if not communicating with the tank. Most bosses now have a big enough hit box for melee to be able to do that. Most melee also have a multitude of movement abilities to help with keeping up.
Melee only have a harder time in M+ but in raids range bear the brunt of the mechanics nowadays.
Well, if they aren’t paying attention then it’s their own fault like you said.

I think 10 yards.
Because I like the number 10 more than 8 and it’s easier to do BS math.
If you pick melee, why wouldn’t you think youd be in melee range?

Of course we should have to move with the tank.
But, if I’m not looking at my ability icons to see that they are red, it’s not immediately obvious when a poorly designed hit-box has caused slight mob movement to out range me.
Ranged have their things to worry about too, but those are generally specific to the fight design (stay out of Bad), not to hit-box design.

As of the latest build, we still have our extended range, likely because we use magic and most of our other attacks are ranged anyway.
They had actually. Wings of liberty had been tested several times. But they are hard stuck on horse (root me and snare me now graphic!) mobility. But ppl is hard stuck on making rets the next ranged spec for some reason.
Also juggernauts would mean we are hard to kill and are melee, melee that we are losing on.
Too far and we look too much swinging in air.
8 yards is ok to look at with 2-handers swinging.
Yeah, I remember wol during ptr. Would have loved that, but blizz thinks it’s too similar to HL, despite almost every notable pally NPC having a leap
Isn’t Ret approaching Dracthyr levels of range? That is absolute insanity lol
I think the only melee I accept being able to range like that is Survival Hunter.

I’ve been playing Feral with the expanded range for as long as I’ve been playing this game, and taking that away is going to be the straw that breaks my back. I’ve leveled every class to max level at some point, and I simply cannot stand the 5 yard range. Having to be close enough to the mobs for their model to clip through my camera is unmanagably frustrating, and having to unlearn years and years of positional memory will kill my desire to play Feral faster than any of the nerfs or reworks of the last four expansions.
(And yes, I know that they’re baking the range increase into cat form “for now,” but that’s antithetical to their stated goal, and still hurts bear form. Which is even worse when the new hero talents and talent tree (particularly Fluid Form) want us to be swapping between the two frequently)

Bad news, the statements Blizz has made lately indicate that they’ll be removing range extending abilities for melee rather than add them to more specs.
I do think Warriors need like one more yard of range though.
On fights where the tanks have to keep moving the boss around, I often find that I’m somehow out of range while practically still intersecting with the boss’s model.

The inconsistency with mob/boss hitboxes is the real culprit here. If they address that then the loss of range extending passives will be a non issue for me at least.

It’s their answer for not giving us mobility. If they’d just display the hit boxes it’d be a lot better.
99% of people are playing the auto attack build so you need to be in melee to pull the numbers but yeah we have flexible options when pushed out of melee due to mechanics but unless you want to negative parse and have horrid numbers you can’t really chill in mid-range.
They don’t want to give Paladins gap closers and choose to give us increased range instead to try to avoid homogenization.
