I’m going to lose my mind if I accidentally fire another fire breath at level 1 on a massive group of mobs again.
Please, this feels so horrible lol.

You can use press-and-hold if it’s an issue for you. I think the bigger problem is empowered spells failing to correctly fire when activated.
It doesn’t work either way for me sometimes. I’ve tried both ways on different computers, even, and sometimes it cancels when it shouldn’t. Other times it casts early (while I’m still holding down the button, or when I have t tapped it again) or keeps charging after I’ve told it to cast. /sigh
Make it into a macro like:
#showtooltip
/cast Fire Breath
Doing so, will make it cast the full spell. If you want to cast it earlier, then click it a second time once it has reached the charge you want.
Do note, that if you click it a second time before the first charge is ready, it will cast immediately when the first charge comes up. This makes the macro the same as a non-macro Fire Breath.
I’m not sure what you’re saying a macro adds to the equation here.
Empowered spells when in a macro will behave as if you are using press-and-hold without actually having to press-and-hold.
For instance, I have Fire Breath and Spirit Bloom as macros so I don’t accidentally cast them at one charge. On the other hand, I do not have Dream Breath as a macro (dragged the spell from the spellbook to the action bar) because I often want it to cast at one charge.
I’ll admit that I was quite disappointed in how these abilities interact in macros. The fire and forget nature of a macro’d full blast can be convenient, but it’s not optimal.
This sounds like a bug, so it seems more like a bandaid fix than anything.
I’m sure macros are not intended to prevent other functionality.
There is a setting in options to allow you to not have to press-and-hold. I forget where it is but it is in game to be able to do what you are doing with a macro but with the in game settings. It made evoker more playable to me to be able to press, then press the spell again when I wanted it to go off.
Are you using a wireless keyboard?
It sounds to me like you have connectivity issues with your keyboard.
You can test by opening notepad and holding the key.
If you see the string of characters pause every now and then, it’s a keyboard issue.
If you don’t use wireless, then maybe you’re overloading you usb host or something?
If it’s a gaming keyboard with LEDs and such, you may need to use a USB3 port.
If you have a wireless mouse, wireless dongles tend to cause issues with USB3 ports.
Use the provided extension cable so that the dongle is close to your mouse, rather than the port.
That will fix most USB issues and any issues you might also have with your mouse.
This has to be a bug, I’m surprised others aren’t encountering this. I have it set to the default where you hold and release. But maybe 1 out of 4 times it switches behavior and keeps casting to the end after I release the key, unless I press the key again to stop it. Maybe they just need to disable spell queueing if this causes the bug, otherwise why even have two options in the first place if it randomly switches on you?
Ive noticed that the empower spells and press and hold to cast dont always work as intended. Ive gotten into the habit of taking a split a second to stop everything before an empower to ensure it works correctly. Press and hold always stops on its own, so I still find myself throwing in a courtesy tap as I’m casting. I’m sure these issues will be smoothed out eventually as the game is glitchy as hell at the moment.
The only issue i have is with empowered abilities not being queued. So i can hit my button, but nothing happens. I have to literally wait for any other spell to complete, then hit my button. It’s very frustrating.
But it’s known that macros don’t work with the new features, like mouseover casting and empowered abilities. Also moving while casting empower cancels it rather than casts it. This is annoying too, especially if you let go of the key then instantly move. Because of spell batching (i assume anyway) it doesn’t cast still.
This is usually how you lock out all your spells too until you recast.
DF is not ready for release, but it’s a hell of a lot more polished than SL was.
Thanks for the tips.
Unfortunately, everything is wired. I use the fastest 2 ports on my tower for my inputs. I’ve been able to replicate this on two different setups, and with and without addons active.
Tried changing graphics settings to 1?
Turn off vsync.
Toggle hardware cursor.
Toggle ipv6.
Toggle dx12.
It definitely seems like some kind of lag issue to me. But if none of that helps, it’s probably a bug. I just can’t say i’ve hit it after playing evoker for 4 weeks or so on beta.
Try the “Press and Tap” option. You will have to get used to pressing the key again to trigger the skill on demand, but it will prevent you from accidental misfires.
The problem happens even when using the “press and tap” method. I’ve tried it that way as well as “press and hold”, and regardless of how I do it, Fire Breath misfires 9 times out of 10, and always prematurely goes off at the exact same spot on the empower bar.
I’m having the same issue with holding and releasing. It just keeps charging 30% of the time, no macros involved. It seems to have gotten much worse with Dragonflight release, unless I am just noticing it more since I’m more active.
