Obviously, there are things that are out of people’s control like losing internet, or maybe your game crashing. Sometimes you can come back from that and there’s no need for being penalized if you were gone for a short enough amount of time. Sometimes server reliability is an issue as well and the player isn’t at fault.
There’s a certain type of player that will Alt + F4 or otherwise intentionally disconnect as a form of rage quitting.
I hope Blizzard doesn’t only punish the frequent leavers as the ones who drop group, but also count the ones who are Offline after a wipe/death/etc.,
I’m not sure about the rest of you, but there are definitely a whole lot of players from a particular region that do this more often than players from other regions.

How do you differentiate between someone legitimately disconnecting vs. someone who just alt+f4’d.
On paper what you are saying makes some sense. Why should someone be punished for something that was out of their control (Powercut/internet outage) but how would the game be able to tell the difference.

they should also punish people who do insanely bad dps, who don’t kick, who die to easily avoidable stuff repeatedly, and who don’t push defensives.

You don’t punish them, its only information, and that information says that they semi regularly lose net in keys! I don’t care how they don’t finish/leave keys, I just want to know the risks.
Don’t forget to punish DPS who does less than 2.5x the tanks damage while we’re at it.
I’m sure there’s code they could write to detect if they pressed alt+f4.
Still over here advocating for a “frequently left” marker. I want to see who can’t keep groups together. I’ve seen probably less than 20 leavers after over 300 keys (in key levels expected to finish). I choose to believe people aren’t lighting themselves on fire for 6%. So tell me who has this mythical 30%+ leaver rate.
Even if they could, which I’m not sure about, do you think they could write code to detect turning off wi-fi or unplugging an Ethernet cable?
Maybe Blizzard should station people at every player’s home to monitor whether a disconnect is legit.
Blizzard already has some type of code or program to determine if people press Alt + F4 because they use it in Overwatch. In OW2 it became such an issue that there was a patch that addressed it.
besides that though, just like how Blizz would be implementing a vote to quit the key mutually, they could have something in place to vote for someone who is offline. For example, if a player disconnects after a wipe, or dying alone, or any evidence of the key not being timed, a vote can be called up for.
For the rest of the people in the comments, maybe “punish” was not the right word here. I really just mean give them the marker of “Frequent Leaver” or whatever it’s called like we already see in the PTR for next tier. Group leader’s who have the information of when someone leaves frequently, even if by disconnects can ignore frequent leavers in que.
you punish them both. it’s the only way to be sure.
