Ok here’s the thing I love this game I love everything pvp but the whole pvp identity in this game has been put thru a meat grinder of agony and pain, and is increasingly taking a backseat xpac over xpac.
That’s a grave mistake, because dare I SAY that PvP is MORE important for the future of WoW than PvE–not JUST for current players but prospective players who WANT to dip their feet into the game.
Heck, I think back to all my glory days and some of the most legendary and awesomest times I ever had and all of them were in context of PvP.
Listen, I think instanced PvP is fine, arena, rbgs, gladiators, blah blah whathaveyou, but we’ve grown too acustomed to it and have TOTALLY forgotten what reeaaaal PvP is.
Even if you’re not a PvPer at ALL, theres something to be said about the classic experience, where you had REAL PvP experiences out in the open all the time and how much it defined the game and was really a lens thru which you experienced it.
You know, the world that you’re actually playing in, alongside quests, story, etc. and everything else that made it REAL, AUTHENTIC, AND LASTING and feel like it was actually THE MAIN PART OF THE GAME YOU’RE PLAYING and not something you just queue up for and for the duration of a match (30 mins).
When you got to actually KNOW people by name AND REMEMBER THEM, grow with them, progress with them, and when people had actual reputations in the community.
(whens the last time u rememberd someones name in a battleground LOL)
When you had a list of archrivals that you need to get payback on!!!
When you had a buddy or two or an entire guild to come back you up when you’re in a jam or to go with you thru dangerous uncharted territory!
Nowadays, these things are a lot harder when you have cross realm zones, phasing, layering and the whole gamut of things that break the ideal of a consistent persistent community of a single server.
And CROSS FACTION! Ugh.
I wrote a great deal AGAINST cross faction anything when it was first out especially on an alt however I was almost UNANIMOUSLY shot down. I suspect that from almost all of the ones who were against it come from a very PvE oriented background. They just don’t GET us.
At the risk of repeating myself from many moons ago: Cross faction is not the way forward for players who are serious about playing the game in a PvP forward, oriented and fashioned way: We’re not about it.
It’s lame, it’s sad, it’s like holding the broken pieces of a favorite glass vase in your hands you cherished from long ago.
I DO NOT. LIKE. WARMODE.
Why? Because it lacks PERMANENCE that meaningful choices HAVE. The ability to switch things on and off on a whim just isn’t fun, C’MON!—I’d MUCH rather be in with people who are committed to the same thing I am.
I’m not here for that “ohh its getting too hot let me turn that offf!!!”
NO! WE’RE GOING TO BOIL TOGETHER
I see no harm in leaving warmode on PvE servers, but they a no-go on real deal PvP servers.
Here’s what Im recommending and it’s not too extreme, it’s just a couple of adjustments that need to be made and everything should fall into place naturally.
- Warmode needs to be removed or at least relegated only to PvE servers, PvP servers are always locked to being PvP
- Need to make each server unique in that I’m not connected to players with other servers or at the very least that any layering/sharding/phasing that IS done is minimal and doesn’t interupt. I can learn about my community, and they can learn about me cuz it’s not always changing.
- Faction locked. or at the least if you HAVE to be avant garde then have it so players can choose any faction they want when they pick their race but at no point in the game can you team up with or interact friendly with the OPPOSING faction. This facilitates and strengthens conflict.
- More incentives, rewards, and a wholistic system in place for PvP that happens out in the world. It seems like all the rewards are currently for instanced PvP and that shouldn’t be. Need to find a way to make the dynamic experiences of world pvp rewarding and exciting.
- Keep it high risk, high reward. People who like PvP in general are naturally inclined to that sense of thrill in general, so at certain points in the game we need something with HIGH Risk.
I’m thinking of like how in runescape you had the wildy, where if you died you would drop EVERYTHING in your inventory. The stakes were high–it was scary–it was fun. We need more of stuff like that. Right now the only thing going for the game in that department is armor durability loss–No shot.
Can I ask something? You had a couple of RP PvP realms to boot back in the day for those who wanted it, WHY NOT A FEW HARDCORE PVP SERVERS ?!?!?!? Let those who want that thrill, go in. Build it, and they’ll come.
I really hope someone somewhere takes this to heart because the truth is a LOT of players feel the way I do and WANT THIS–they’re just not well spoken or pressed atm to go to the forums about it, or maybe they don’t even play anymore. I’d like to represent a generation past and also a generation of players to come who can hopefully experience the same awesome experiences in the game I once did!
