I respect the dev team wanting to go back to the roots of WoW and make this game a RPG again.
Please, be resilient. People are gonna complain and cry, but dont give up. Make it so choices are permanent and impactful.
Make it so I can choose if I wanna be a single target SMF Fury warrior with a X build/playstyle/rotation or an AOE monster with TG and Y build/playstyle/rotation.
Tweak things as needed, specing into AoE should not make my single target completely irrelevant, but make it so there is a LARGE and NOTICEABLE difference.
If people end up complaining about min maxing then they should not be playing a MMORPG. Go try some competitive game like League, DotA or Counter Strike. WoW is a RPG. The only aspect of the game where balance could probably be more severe is rated PvP, where, if needed, you could have templates like we had back in WoD.
TL ; DR Dev team has the right mentality for Shadowlands, they can save WoW. They just need to not go back on their words and go all in with the meaningful choices and player customization.

Can you explain to me what is meaningful about going to a 3rd party website or a discord server and typing in your class/spec and the content you do primarily? Because that is how 90% of people will choose their covenant. The same way everyone chose their Azerite traits, Essences, and Corruption in BFA.

SL is going to be BfA 2.0 from what I’ve seen so far.

Thats not how people will choose their covenant if choices are meaningful and impactul. People are gonna choose based on how they want to play.

I’m of the opinion that one of Blizzard’s biggest problems keeping BFA from being a good xpac was their tendency to just give up on stuff.
Islands could have been cool, but they just gave up as soon as it was clear they sucked. Warfronts could have been cool, but they just threw their hands up and said “yeah we’re done”. Azerite wound up not being completely terrible, and I honestly think essences are pretty fun at this point. Corruption I’m still not a huge fan of, but I think they could have done more with that system, not less.
I really hope they don’t just give up on the Covenant system and make it good.

In BFA beta they said that the Azerite Traits would be balanced so that you never felt like you picked a bad trait. 2 years later now and they still haven’t done that.

Heck for the final tier they even made sure every single piece had a good trait guarenteed.

Fair. You go to a website and figure out whats best for each situation and which of the plastyles suits you better. CHOICE.

While making choices impactful is all well and good - you cannot make them permanent when the development portion of the game is never finished.
With the sheer number of changes, both good and bad, to abilities over the last few years it could render your character horribly un-fun to play. Just ask Demonology Locks. They were in a good place when Blizzard literally said they wished people wouldn’t play the spec and stole large parts of it for another class.

It doesn’t matter if you try to be anti meta players will always make a meta. It’s going to happen. It happens in Classic and it will happen in Shadowlands. Saying it won’t is naivety.

If i want to mythic raid i will have to choose my best dps spec, best covenant and best covenant follower ability from what i read. Same for pvp. It’s bfa 2.0 but hopefully way less grindy.
