Playing with a controller is better

I've been playing with a ps4 controller for several months now using the addon consoleport. at first i thought the concept itself was ridiculous, but i had a controller and i had curiosity. At first, it was absolute garbage and i couldn't see why anyone would use a controller to play wow. but, the consoleport UI was very unique and intuitive, so i held out to see if i could get used to it.
and i did.
I only have one issue with it now, which is reticle casting (heroic leap, blizzard etc)
It's still perfectly doable, i just wish it was a bit easier. Other than that, everything is better
I no longer need macros because i can access my abilities faster
you can put a much larger range of abilities on it than you'd expect, with left bumper and trigger acting as ctrl, shift, and ctrl+shift
Movement is far easier, right click auto toggles and can be untoggled with the "interact" button for use of the cursor
with right click toggled, the right stick can be used to move the camera while left stick is wasd. I am one who had movement issues in raids where i would be so focused on damaging the boss that i found it hard to move at the same time, and would often die from mechanics. now i can move around my target in 360 degrees but have no negative effect on my ability to fight. I have found this useful in battlegrounds too, some players find it hard to keep up with a player circling around them constantly. i will likely never use a keyboard and mouse for wow again. my mouse is there when i need it, but only for interface interactions.
the big plus for me is the WoWmapper program that does the work of mapping the keys onto the controller and syncs them with the addon in the game
WoWmapper detects and fully supports the virtual nvidia SHIELD controller.
I can play wow on my tablet via moonlight streaming anywhere in the world that i can connect the tablet to decent wifi

If you haven't tried this, try it.
If you don't expect it could ever be good, you might be wrong, try it.
To enjoy this requires patience, but it's worth it.
Big shoutout to Munk, who developed the addon.

I appreciate this post...there isn’t much about ConsolePort and Moonlight on the forums, and I am trying to set this up for my iPad Pro or iPhone 7 Plus.

This used to work for me, back on a Windows 7 machine...now, when I get into WoW, it does NOT recognize ANY controller inputs. Outside of WoW, it seems to recognize the arrows and joystick movements (tested on the windows menu). I have wowmapper loaded and it claims to see an “Xinput” controller.

Would you recommend the nvidia shield controller? Also, would this every potentially work over the internet?

Mainly, I just need to find a way to get my controller recognized in WoW again. I’m willing to buy a new controller, but I’m worried it is software related...did you do anything to moonlight, geforce experience, or downgrade any drivers to get this to work?
Thanks,
Smooge
I use WoWMapper to get it to see a Ps4 controller.
I'd used Bellular's recommendations to set up mine.
It's a fun and different way to level a character for sure.
I've not tried a dungeon or raid or anything yet.

I can't imagine using a console controller for raid healing.

Not so bad in XIV where the raid party caps at 8 people. In WoW though, people could very well be dead by the time I cycle to them.
Glad you like it and are having fun but using a controller for anything is an exercise in wrist and hand pain for me. Personally I prefer my G13 game pad. I get the thumb stick for movement and 20 plus buttons in easy reach for skills and no wrist or hand cramps

Currently using a steam controller (without console port, just glosc and my own config)... for less intense stuff (like world quests out of war mode) to ease myself into it. Someone I know in the SC community heals mythics with it, so its certainly viable, its just that while I've been using the controller for all my gaming needs since it launched WoW is a different beast where very efficient mouse control is just as important as very efficiently accessing your abilities and movement.

In that regard, I think the SC could easily be better than regular keyboards and mice, but probably not as good as an Orbweaver (or similar) with one of those mmo mice with 12 buttons along the side. Its better to have direct access to abilities instead of putting them behind modeshifts/modifiers. However, an orbweaver alone is over 100 usd, where the SC is 50... so...
I can see a controller working in solo content, but even in 5-mans that sounds like a fantastic way to end up facedown. It's the same reason Starcraft 64 was !@#$, there are too many moving parts you need to interact with very quickly.

I leveled from 1-120 and pvp a bit using a steam controller as a rogue. I honesty believe it made leveling much more enjoyable and immersive. Kinda gave me ARPG (witcher etc) vibes at times, not to mention how smoothly moving the character around felt instead of using WASD.

If you have a steam controller and wanna level a melee character or something, I'd definitely recommend giving it a shot.

Success after hours of troubleshooting.
I had success finally!
I Installed X360CE which was a footnote on the consoleport page, ran that program, and made sure it was picking up the inputs from my controller. I then ran wowmapper, which showed “xinput controller connected” and “battery is at 100%”

This time when I loaded wow thru moonlight on my ipad pro I got control response in the game!
All of you with negative comments about WoW and controllers need to be quiet lol. If you haven't tried it and have ZERO experience with it, your opinion means absolutely nothing. It's like saying ice cream is disgusting and you've never once had ice cream... ignorance.

WoW isn't a precision game... Shooters are. Simply tab-targeting and lock targeting makes this so. It's all about button combinations people... once you learn them, you're as good as gold

Now if you're playing a Hunter/Shaman type class where you have to place totems and traps, then you'll hit some hiccups, but you can still get it figured out. It'll be foreign, so, as with everything in life... it takes practice to get good at it. I was terrible at keyboard and mouse the first time used them.

I agree with the OP, controller is better. It's a bit more difficult when healing though. There are a few kinks to tune or fix altogether but it's so much more fun and I'm still topping charts. I've been playing WoW since vanilla (not to be out of those lol) and I've always wanted to play on a controller, but I listened to too many ignorant people who have said "WoW would be terrible on controller" or "there aren't enough buttons on a controller"... it's not terrible and there are more than enough buttons.

I want to preface this by saying i havent played with a controller and i never will so take my post with a grain of salt. Playing with a controller seems stupid as hell and the idea of it actually makes me mad, if youre better with a controller you can play with it no one will stop you, but its ultimatley less optimal than a mouse and keyboard. All it does is add limitations, I understand you can program it to where everything “works” but why would you, there was a system that it was built for and it works fine, but on top of that from what ive seen and heard, even on this post from supporters, is that it makes it difficult to either 1. Heal or 2. Use point and click abillities. I have no doubt that you could practice enough and get good with this, but then again why would you? You have a keyboard and mouse that does it fine. And if you would like to argue that you can reach your buttons faster because everythings so close, use a mouse with the 12 buttons on the side and everything is even closer. Its not that playing on a controller isnt possible or even viable, its that why would you?

Smells like necromancer in here…

Well, if the class designers use touchscreens to play WoW then next step would be controllers.

Holy Necro Batman!

Why, just why reply to this old thread only to put in your negative input?

I’ve set up WoWMapper and ConsolePort to work with xbox one controller, but looking to set up my chatpad to work as well so i can set up hotkeys and whatnot. I’ve read in other forums that this is possible and other people have successfully done it. The chatpad plugs directly into my controller, am hoping to be able to set it up to use the controller for movement and looking around and mouse controls, but set up hotkeys/bindings to the chatpad so I can still maintain the typical keyboard hotkey/bindings. Anyone have any experience doing this, and if so, would you please help me? Like I said, I have read other forums where people have successfully done this. Thank you in advance.

The necro that keeps on giving.

It’s absolutely not “better”. You will never compare to skill and efficiency vs kb/m. However, it is a nice alternative for people who want a more chill way of playing.

Why do people keep necroing this specific thread?

To throw my two cents in… just like for ESO the controller is fine for chilling in world content but awful for pvp and high end pve content.
