So I really want to play a rogue or paladin. Problem is both my really close friends are playing these classes as mains. The rogue has mained Rogue forever and the paladin is a new thing for him coming over from maining warlock for years. However I am bored with the classes I am playing and want to play one of these classes. In the past they have often gotten angry or upset that I voiced wanting to play something they were playing. Am I in the wrong here? Should I just keep playing what im playing now and forget about it? I just dont want to lose the group im playing with cause i upset someone by playing something they were playing as stupid as that sounds. Or am I overthinking it? Isnt it like an unwritten rule to not “copy” what class your friend is playing? My friends are really good people and all they just like to be special snowflakes. Anyways I know there are bigher problems and this is just a game but id just like opinions, have any of you ran into this?
…
Just play what you enjoy, man. If you want to go Paladin, then go for it.
Are you guys 10-years old?
They’re prob afraid you’re going to perform better on their special snowflake class.
You should betray your friends.
Im 12… nah see i know it sounds stupid as hell. But its just been eating at me. I cant even enjoy the game at this point.
Play the same spec and class as your friend.
Smash them at every metric in the game.
Never let them forget you are better than them on your alt.
Yeah I don’t overlap classes with my friends. It mainly has to do with how we are raised in Western cultures to value individuality and stand out. In more eastern family focused cultures like Japan its not that much of an issue. For instance there was a pen research study conducted where they tested people from eastern and western cultures separately by having them select a colored pen from a jar and the eastern people took whatever but the western people took the pen colors others did not.

Thats a link to the study if you are interested.
I like the way you think.
12 year olds use the phrase “eating at me”?
Color Me impressed. Play what you want they’ll get over it if they really are your friends
Thus why we are a fundamentally broken society which shuns collectivism in favor of two dudes having 100 billion dollars. But I digress. Um, back on topic…
Yeah that makes sense. Your friends are being stupid. Especially if you play paladin but play a different spec (and thus an entirely different role).
Just make the same class as them and then duel them. Loser has to change their class. Problem solved!
Well im not really 12 lol im in my twenties I just know how stupid it must have sounded to even ask this. Personally It shouldent matter and if someone wanted to play the same class as me idc its a videogame. But to them it matters, and iv always been one to account other peoples feelings and stuff before my own. Thus why this is an issue for me.
This is the way.
Eh, dual paladins is fine; healer / dps / tank, just don’t both play the same role. Played with a friend of mine as Ret and he healed for like 5 years before I eventually made the switch back to Mage.
You should stop doing this when you have “friends” that think the opposite.
You should play the same class and make sure you name it really close to his character’s name as well. Next when he gets mad, meet him out back of the school and fight him.
Just play what you want. There is no unwritten rule about needing to play different classes. Personal loot also actually helps ensure you aren’t taking loot from one another anyways, and you can help gear each other up more easily that way too.
Plus, sometimes it can be fun to make a group out of the same class. Different rogue bandits, working together for different reasons. The Wildman beastmaster working with the more refined marksmen tracker, etc. You can get some fun RP dynamics there!
Don’t do this, my dude. You can be an empathetic human without becoming a doormat. Now go stand in front of a mirror and repeat after me:

Interesting why only their feelings matter and not yours. Sounds like great friends.
