Playing from a Flash Drive

I cant seem to be able to start a topic anywhere in general so i guess this is my spot maybe? Im looking to install WoW on a USB 3.0 or an external HD so i can play at work. I cant install anything on our computers without admin passwords. Ive heard it runs directly from the drive without any install if I copy it over from the computer its on at home. If thats the case, what size HD or USB drive would I need to purchase? I was looking at 1TB but that seems a bit large. Advise?

I recall that a fresh WoW install takes up about 60-70 gigabytes. A 64 gigabyte flash drive would probably be juuuust a little too small, but a 128 should be quite roomy.

Googling around, the internet consensus is that it should work ok at that capacity and interface.

Ah, wonderful! I shall pick one up today. Assuming I just transfer my whole file from my computer to the drive then launch from the drive on my work computer? Im excited to be able to play again. Been quite some time since ive had free time at home. Work is my only hope!

I’ve never seen anyone describe using WoW without installing the Battle.net desktop app, but it’s supposed to be optional to run WoW. The first time you may miss it is would be the next client-side update, since the patching process is done by Battle.net. I think.

But yeah, the entire World of Warcraft directory is portable. The settings in the WTF folder may not get along nicely with a system they weren’t originally configured for, so keep in mind you may have to do a partial UI reset.

Also… this is technical advice. Under no circumstances am I advocating playing WoW during your work hours or on company assets. That’s between you and your employer.

The question you should really be asking yourself is will you be able to play the game with the graphics card available on your work machine? Might find yourself having spent some cash on a flash drive without the a Computer able t handle the graphics!

It would treat the flash drive just like a hard drive. I’ve run a few games off one before. They aren’t exactly zippy with the load times if you get a cheap flash drive. Spend some money and get a good one and it should run just fine. That makes it comparable to a HDD at any rate.

The problem is when you want to run on more than one computer. The settings you have on one machine may not work on another. A minor annoyance for portability.

If you are going to do this, I would suggest an external SSD over a simple USB stick. USB sticks never seem as fast to me.

I know this is an old thread, but I feel it is still valid to be active as I have 3.0 Flash drive on my computer and runs wow from there. it is actually much faster than my 1TB hard drive. I have been running for about two months now.
