I know. That’s a broad area (under “advice”), but maybe if I limit my question a bit it won’t be as difficult for you to provide an answer, should you choose to.
First, a parallel: I play Jonãs as a mage, and while this may be the only thing which matches, I am hoping that at least some of my spell casts will serve me as I transition.
Secondly, playing a mage for someone with my profile may not be the best choice, so what would role you recommend or is it even up to me?
Profile: 75 year old male, 18 year veteran of WoW, and my strong area is DPS.
And lastly, got any recommendations for an online “manual” I can use as a guide, so I won’t go into my new game completely cold?
I trust my friends here, so any help is greatly appreciated.
PS: NOT leaving WoW, just “spreading my wings” a bit.
Play what you want to, the joy of in tabletop roleplaying is that it’s run by a person right there that can cater the game to the group that’s playing. The most important part is finding a group of people you enjoy spending time with.
Talk with your DM to see what type of game they run, if they have the time they may be able to help you decide on a character if they’re an experienced one, and if not you’ll all learn together and go with what looks neat to you.
Not sure what you’re referring to as your profile, but dnd doesn’t have to be like Critical Role. Sure, getting into character can be fun, but it’s not required, nor are voices or anything like that if that’s what you’re thinking. If it comes to mind, sure, belt out the dramatic rousing speech you just thought up, or say something like “my character jumps on the table and gives a rousing speech to the crowd using the info they’ve gleaned from overheard rumors and talking to people in the town to try and inspire them to take up our cause and help us out”
For online stuff, I like Matt Collville, although a lot of his stuff is more pointed to DMs and running the game, but he has some player based stuff too

Just remember. Yes watching Matt Mercer dm and Critical Role players be fantastic is great and all. But you don’t HAVE to try and be like them.
Just don’t be a creepazoid and most folks will be cool with you.

Thanks to both of you for the thoughtful replies. I found an online beginner’s “handbook” I can download for $10.00, so coupled with that and not being a “creepazoid” I hope to have some fun.
Thanks again.
