Playing a Dragonsworn

So I’m not a huge fan of established Dracthyr lore. I decided to play my Dracthyr as a Half-Elf that became a Dragonsworn and learned how to magically transform into a draconic humanoid form with enhanced magical ability. So his natural form is the elf, and the dragon form is the transformation.

Anyone else doing this?

Not me.

The fact Dracthyr can only be Evokers has curbed much of my interest in making one. Mail gear tends to be pretty awful in general, even if there are a few good pieces or sets out there. Still, once they do have additional classes unlocked, I’ll probably try RP’ing one as a Half-Elf. Not quite so sure I’d go so far as to acknowledge they even have a Draconic form for RP purposes though.

That said, a Dracthyr Mage with blue scales would be a pretty awesome concept for a Dragonsworn of the Blue Flight, or a Dracthyr Druid with green scales for the Green Flight. Plenty of options.

I really wanted to like dracthyr, but those body types and lack of true transmog, oof. And the visage restrictions annoy the hell out of me.

It sucks because I like the concept they’re going with visages, and how they’re meant to be an expression of yourself, but I feel that the message is entirely screwed up horde-side. It’s all well and good to look like a human or an elf alliance-side, where both shapes are normally accepted there. But when it comes to the horde being mostly made up of more monstrous races, your visage is the outsider aesthetic at best, or choosing to look like a hostile enemy race at worst. It’s like saying with your body “I don’t want to be associated with you.”

Yeah it is laughably meager.

I gave Blizz a soft pass on the little to no lore on ARs like the Vulpera as they were sideshow attractions that aren’t really here to do much more than fill out a roster.

But you’d think a new class and race tied directly into the story of the expansion would have more to go on than

Yeah they were super soldiers the bad guy from 10 years ago made, put in a storage garage then told nobody about”.

And the thing is just from a creative perspective the Dracthyr being strangers in a strange world could be interesting. Azeroth as we know it and all the denizens therein are a mystery to them. Could have a lot of fun bits like them getting confused and thinking horses are the dominant species in Elywn. Or they just presume Goblins are some diminutive but smarter Orcoid subrace which would also be a fun little nod to Warcraft’s roots as a Warhammer game that couldn’t get the licensing.

But instead we’re in the only area they actually have knowledge of so even that’s a non-starter.

They’re just kinda there.

I wish Giant Dragonkin was a option to Dracthyr. That would make the Race more interesting than what they are now.

Not me, but this is a perfectly fine usage of the Dracthyr Evoker.

Personally I was never really sold on the “dragonsworn” lore of old, so despite the shortcomings I’m ok enough with the Dracthyr as is, being an engineered humanoid dragon species that’s now seeking its place in the world. Most of my mortal characters have an associated dragonflight that they have an affinity toward and act as agents of (selection of mount, canonically doing the quests of those flights, certain transmogs, etc) but aren’t full on dragonsworn and aren’t transformed.

Eventually I’m sure Dracthyr get opened up to other classes so at that point the experience of playing a blue scaled mage/green scaled druid etc dragon will be realized.

Totally and absolutely true. It’s partially justifiable in the lack of certain visages such as Orcs. I could see that Neltharion might have wanted the dracthyr visage ability to be lesser than that of his own.

Wow. Honestly great idea. I really hoped for Dragonsworn to be the hero class (since it would’ve been the perfect expansion to implement them and via the RPG lore any race would’ve been able to be one) we were getting. And gaining draconic traits via transformation/powers IS in keeping with the TTRPG lore for them up to and including the scales, breath weapon and taking a winged draconic form.

In short, awesome idea and might steal that lol

If you could have chosen your own race and played the class without having to transform into “dracthyr” form or had a choice of draknoid or dragonspawn as well. I would have been more interested in the class specially augmentation. I just can’t stand the drathyr look or lore.

Its Void Elves all over again.

Players: “We would love to play dragons!”
Blizzard: “Okay, here’s what you asked for.”
Players: “What… are these? These aren’t dragons.”
Blizzard: “This is the race you wanted to play. Isn’t it cool?”
Players: “They… don’t look anything like Dragons. And… they only have half-elf visage forms?”
Blizzard: “Ah, but they HAVE visage forms! Thus, they’re dragons! You’re welcome.”

I imagine the dracthyr form is akin to when Bruce Banner transforms into the Hulk. It’s not really wanted but thats the powerhouse behind his magic, so he lets it unleash. So the character isnt a huge fan of it either, making for easy RP, as I dont have to pretend too much. lol

The problem with the visage form is that it actually has a game play advantage.

If you toggle auto-Visage at end of battle, you get significant improvements in resource recovery and self healing.

As a worgen I could forgo the Human form completely without consequence. That’s not the same here.

The half-dragon race created through magic+mad science was done better with EverQuest II’s sarnak…

Which themselves are probably ripped off from DnD somewhere.

Also visages for the Dracthyr look a lot like EQ1’s dragon humanoid race. Down to the face paint and colorful hair. Drakkin? I don’t remember that was after my time.

It’s like the two dragon races from the EQ franchise had a baby
