Since everyone is piling on to give their two cents, as someone who has played it on the PTR and as someone who went in with the mentality as “Current Torghast sucks and is a baby-easy chore”, I will say I enjoy the new Torghast.
Does it need some tuning? Sure. Some of the affixes need to be thrown out entirely, others need to be tuned. But the streak system is actually fun. It really is. Ask people who have played it.
It feels fun to keep that bar red. It really, really does.
Yes, if you go into Torghast layers you are undergeared for by yourself, like Layer 12 is currently on the PTR, it is harder to keep the bar red because you’re undergeared and that feels bad, but if you play content appropriate to your gear level as well as playing with a friend it feels very fun.
Most of the haters simply hate the concept of it and haven’t dabbled with it. Or they need to point out the negatives in order to drum up attention for their video reviews. As far as talking to people on the PTR who have played it, it is fun. It just is.
Sidenote: honestly, I wish Blizzard never tied Soul Ash to Torghast. The new version of Torghast, with some additional tuning, could have stood on its own as a fun game mode you play from time to time for mogs and mounts, but instead is going to be weighed down with all of the drama of bad players who go in there for their legendaries who simply don’t enjoy action gameplay whining about how hard it is either directly or indirectly.
I like Torghast as content, I just hate that it’s nothing more than a time-waster outside of soul ash.
Why would I run Torghast as a collector, or a raider, outside of the initial collection of soul ash to boost a legendary?
If I just wanted to experience a roguelike, why not just play a better roguelike? Like, what does this feature add to this specific game, other than the feeling that you’re playing a different type of game? It provides very little to an RPG experience, and it feels like just another system they’re designing to become a WoW esport.
At this point, if they’re not going to give me things to collect from in there, or meaningful rewards for the time invested, why not just make an entirely different game instead of this side thing for people to do?
The weekly chore part is definitely what sucks about it. I really don’t need another mandatory weekly chore. If I can go in there when I feel like it for transmogs and such then it would be waaay better.
Like the Legion Mage Tower, I didn’t start that until the expansion was almost over.
We don’t know the full extent of the reward structure yet.
If Visions of N’zoth is anything to go by though, it’s almost certain that after you fully unlock the Tower Upgrades there will be a cosmetic to unlock with excess Tower Knowledge. It’s just obvious as well as typical Blizzard to keep people going back week after week for a mount.
It has been data-mined there are new Torghast-exclusive mounts, so that tower knowledge currency may be used to acquire them. We don’t know for sure yet though.
I don’t agree that they “knew it was horrible”. Blizzard has typically forced players to engage with new systems because they want to get people in the door and try the content before they make any judgements about whether they’ll spend time with it.
I mean look at M+ in Legion. M+ wasn’t horrible but it was semi-forced based on the way Artifact Power worked that expansion. That’s just the way Blizzard operates - get people in the door with a carrot and hope they stay because they like the gameplay.
People commenting on things they don’t actually know first hand about? SHOCKING!
edit:
Agreed. I really like Torghast so I don’t personally mind, but it would be nice for people who don’t not to feel shoehorned into doing it for player power.
people raved about the original torghast on the beta too and how fun it was, and now here we are. you saying “but it’s so fun guys!!!” doesn’t mean any more to me than anyone else’s word does
I have not played any of the PTR content myself, and while I don’t hate Torghast, I don’t really find myself enjoying it all that much. But I’m just not seeing how many of these 9.1 features are really changing it up enough to make the masses enjoy it any more. I’m glad to see a torghast talent tree honestly, but outside of that? Kind of seems like the same ole Torghast.
I think they should’ve taken a better look at anima powers. I find myself having a lot more fun on certain classes than others due to the anima powers. Some classes I feel like I’m just getting powers to make my damage numbers bigger, but it’s not nearly as fun as having an army of infernals or other demons on my warlock.
Also, without a reward system, I don’t think it’ll ever find its footing. Visions had a backpack and a single mount… Decent start… but Islands had like 10 mounts, tons of pets, and even more armor sets. Torghast is one of the main features of this expansion - it needs a better rewards system. Soul Ash and a single mount at Layer 8 TC is not enough.
That’s not an interesting reward structure by itself. It only worked for Horrific Visions because those provided an avenue to obtaining gear. Without that, as Ion has said that they’re not going to provide such things, the climb up that ladder will not provide the same level of interest, because there needs to be a trail of candy along the way.
That’s how they keep people like me invested, and they absolutely fail to recognize that. Soul ash alone is not interesting enough currency to buy my time and efforts.
I’m a collector and I’m here for the stories, the cosmetics, and the feel of an RPG in a world I share with other players. Everything else takes a back seat to that, and if those things aren’t being provided at a reasonable rate, the content is a wash for me.
The forum will always end up complaining about something. It doesn’t matter if the masses in-game enjoy it or not. If one didn’t read the forum on a normal basis and only played the game they wouldn’t even know about all these things that people claim everyone hates.
I hated the feel of the expansion before I came to the forums and read about others. In fact, my distaste is what brought me here.
Do I represent the majority? IDK nor do I care. I represent myself. And I think everything they’re doing to make Torghast a better experience (which does sound like it will be) won’t matter, at least to me, because I still feel like I have no valuable reason to do it as someone who isn’t pushing group content progression.
Making by best effort not to make this sound personal, but I’ve seen many of things youve posted over at least the last several months and its obvious the kind of brutal content you enjoy and im not surprised at all that you find that dumpster fire fun.
What people played in the beta was a different game experience than what went live.
So yeah, Blizzard could pull a switcheroo on us, who is to say… but honestly, if they do that, it doesn’t matter what feedback you give if that is their intent to pull a move like that.
The initial trail of candy is the Soul Cinders you need. Presumably once you’ve played it a few times and gotten hooked on the feedback loop of doing a run and getting Tower Knowledge, you’d want to keep progging it to unlock everything in the tree and get that mount.
Time will tell. I know personally if there’s a mount I’ll probably play it to unlock the mount because the content does seem fun and playing something fun that progresses towards something sounds cool to me. Your mileage may vary.
