Every time I come up with a unique name, I’ll start seeing loads of people with some iteration or variation of my character name whereas I had never seen those combinations before. And it’s not with just one name, it’s with almost every name I’ve ever picked. It’s unique for a few days and then people start copying.
Has anyone else dealt with this frustration and do you have any advice or tips on dealing with the disappointment of seeing your character names copied and/or mocked?
I’m tired of having to restart characters because some jerk player in WoW wanted to be an uber jerk.
I am serious. I appreciate the flattery but, I honestly don’t appreciate it. I find it to be very distressing and anxiety inducing. I just want to be left alone and unnoticed. Can’t I have a cute name without becoming the LFG channel joke with 10 other people copying my name as a joke?
That’s that something something bias. When something enters your life you begin to recognize it more in the world. Maybe you came up with the name because you were subtly influenced into the names.
It’s not that they’re copying you; it’s that you’re finally noticing others who have similar names as you.
The same thing happens when you buy a car of a new brand. You buy a Toyota, and then all you see on the road are Toyotas. The Toyotas didn’t increase in quantity; you just notice them more now.
To be fair, you are correct. They are doing it because they know I’m easy to pick on. But the problem is, even when I develop a tough, thick skin, they still do it anyway.
If they’re going to do it no matter what, I might as well get angry about it and hope that makes a difference.
Can honestly say I have never seen anyone with a name close to any character I have. Not in 20 years. And ive mentioned in every “how did you come up with the name of your character” thread where I got it.
