Didnt we already have garrisons in WoD? That turned out pretty great!.. oh wait…
Telling somebody to build a barracks is way different than building each part of the building yourself. Example: gathering wood, gathering ore, have miner smelt ore into bars, blacksmith craft bolts. You craft a door. Etc.
My theory is that Blizzard wants to implement housing but only if done a certain way. The idea is to make it appealing to everyone and not just a niche group of roleplayers, which means it needs to have more than just player owned property as its selling point.
There’s also the issue of not giving players exactly what they want. It wouldn’t take much to add a few instance locations around Orgrimmar and Stormwind that act as a player home, but that wouldn’t be enough for the players that are requesting this feature. Just looking back at some of the post on this topic, it’s clear that the majority want housing in different locations around the map. It may sound simple enough, but players would also like multiple interiors AND exteriors for their own personal touch.
Furniture, player permissions, additional room features, decorating, pets, etc. It would be a huge project that could only be added as an expansion feature, rather than a smaller update. And in no way am I suggesting that Blizzard won’t do it, but I believe it’s something we won’t see until they’ve created what they believe to be the perfect way of doing it.
A sloppy go at it is not something I see them doing. ESO and FF14 both have housing, so the king of MMOs would have to do it better.
Oh, okay! That sounds pretty cool. Like Garrisons, but personal. I guess if we can choose the style of our houses and not get stuck with something race or faction specific that would be awesome. I always hated the Horde garrisons vs the Alliance ones. Because of that, I don’t have a single upgraded one on Horde.
I’d love to see REAL player housing and not that garrison crap we got back in WoD. Blizzard could definitely do it; they just don’t want to do it. Why? I don’t know. I’d love to have my own little patch of Mulgore or something.
Expecting Blizz to put that much detail into player housing is doubtful. Their having a hard enough time just trying to balance, hotfix, and work on on 9.1. It could be an expansion feature (like garrisons) but with recent systems like artifact/azerite power and soulbinds I doubt the would make it a priority over those types of systems. Also considering how poorly garrisons worked out in general I don’t think they would try anything similar again.
Yep! That’s why I liked Wildstar’s; yes, everyone had their own building cut off from others, but the entire thing was customizable.
FF14 takes the route of housing districts where you can’t customize the exterior as much but have full freedom of the interior, with the added bonus of having neighbors and the like.
It comes down to customization and how far you can go with it. Garrisons were a very weak insult to players that have been asking for housing since the game practically launched. Even for what they were, they were an insult to what was promised at the BlizzCon before it.
yeah…that would be pretty cool.
Just have ‘houses’ be existing buildings. If they did that they could maybe even add housing to old content very easily. Just a portal on the front door. Theyd just have to do the interior…and since it’d be instanced, it wouldnt change anything about the existing game world.
You bring up a point I hadn’t realized until now.
Blizzard is focusing forced player retention with the wrong type of systems. They’re putting effort into forcing players to continuously log in to not feel like they’re falling behind rather than incentivizing players to log in because they want to.
I would love if they would just drop the expansion based systems with player power and focus more on systems that are cosmetic and optional while making the classes feel whole and complaint without external power. And the cosmetic systems, such as player housing or even unlocking cosmetics or something, would be the system that people can either forego if it isn’t their cup of tea, or can pursue if it’s something they actually want.
I’m just tired of these expansion systems.
Yep, that’s how FF14 does it. In essence, it could very easily be a district they create for the sole purpose of being housing, and as you said the exterior world needn’t change at all.
So I can yell “GET OFF MY LAWN” IRL and in-game!
Considering the customization debacle, housing is definitely off the table forever. Blizzard only cares about raiders, that much has been made extremely clear.
(and I’d love housing. I sincerely wish we had it. No, garrisons are not housing, nor will they ever be.)
Small indie company that Blizzard is they simply don’t have the means to divide their resources to focus on such things.

Player housing would be a nice option for the casual solo player as opposed to the current content which caters to passive aggressive ESporters, Twitchers and YouTubers.
I can see them making player housing locked behind some type of gate that in order to unlock everything for player housing you have to do some kind of harder group content. That’s how I see Ion wanting that to go down.
The biggest form of mockery from Blizzard towards the idea of Player Housing is the Garrison from WoD.
And it has not even been updated since WoD ended aside from nerfing the Garrison mission table.
“Maybe they should spend some of the millions to hire more people to make appealing features.”
“IF IT’S NOT DUNGEONS OR RAIDS IT’S NOT CONTENT REE”
“… Okay.”
Go to a low pop server. If you go to a high pop server your chances of getting a house are slim to none.
Yeah, sadly I joined friends on a legacy server that I’m pretty sure is high pop, so I doubt I’ll ever manage to get one for as badly as I want it. It doesn’t stop me from trying, and from suddenly finding a surprising amount of fun in playing the game as suboptimally and stupid as possible (I’ve put in about 7 days worth of game time and only got to level 57, but I’ve done every single side quest, and my other jobs are all almost 30).
I think for the developers, adding in player housing would cost more in design and testing than it would gain in subscriptions. And everything is run through accountants now for the bottom line.
Sounds about right.
I just checked my /playtime because I am making sure my house doesn’t get demoed and I lose the plot, and I am at 327 days and 9 hours on FFXIV
