Player Housing Request from Roleplayers

So, the big problem in my view is headcanon.

Roleplayers are collaborative storytellers. We have a tendency to “yes, and” each other’s ideas and take off running with them to build our own stuff, and treat it as canon. There’s a lot of tendency to turn wishlists into lists of expectations, and from there assumptions that what they suggested is a known fact.

It’s clear that there are big groups that have very specific ideas about how it should work that are feeding off each other’s input and coming to a consensus, like they can set out not what they want, but what a supposed “everyone” says that it should be. As long as everyone can be cool and understand that even if they make a very detailed plan and have every alt in their guild post that they want it that their input may not move the needle it should be fine, but…

Well. I’ve been doing roleplay in this game since vanilla, and in general for a long while before that. “Be cool about it” is sometimes outside the skillset of people who are inclined to be dramatic by nature

I believe that this is just the first pass in the interest column. We’ll need to see some teasers or patch notes or, hopefully, some artwork to start the next round.

I’m hoping that as soon as the devs lock in their feature list for this first iteration, they will begin managing expectations and preparing us for what is and isn’t coming…

Garrisons definitely showed the damage of allowing head canon to get too entrenched.

I’m also hoping they allow trials to come in and don’t lock them out from joining their friends in their friends’ homes. I have a friend who cannot always afford a sub but would love to be able to hang out with them and let them have an enjoyable time in the game.

dont do any RP myself but im in full favor of this, almost every other mmo with player housing has a way to open your home to the public anyways, so it shouldnt be hard to do at all

With regards to comments about making wishlists of features for a feature that’s only been teased, my hope is that we can express our interest in something (hopefully) fairly simple, something very specific, and do so en masse, with a lot of advanced notice. My hope is that it would maximize the chances of this being included with housing as part of the initial launch.

All great idea!

Looking back at the Tillers farm, the garrison system, the cut content from garrisons I’ve seen on youtube vids, and just other housing systems from other games (most of which I’ve admittedly never played), I’m cautiously optimistic. I know what can be done, I’m sure most of you do too, but will Blizzard do it is the issue. They have other considerations that we might not be even considering right now, but again we know there’s a lot of potential to customize.

-Out of everything, my biggest fear would be getting locked into Stormwind and Org forever. I’d like multiple zones to pick from to place our house. My biggest gripe with the garrisons back in WoD was getting locked into Shadowmoon and locked out of Frostfire for my garrison. It was just a depressing thing to watch the WoD beta progress and come to the realization we weren’t going to be able to choose a zone for our garrisons and I wouldn’t get to have my snow fort. If at the outset it’s initially locked into certain cities but with the potential for future expansion into other disused zones I’d be ok with it, but who knows how this will play out.

-Secondary hope would be aesthethics. The garrisons were extremely narrow in their style choice: Horde got classic Orc, Alliance got classic Human. The limit to our customization was banners on the walls, what race of guards we got, and placing the buildings in certain plots. The trailer showed an elf walking into a mostly Human styled home, so at the start we can without a doubt expect the Warcraft Human vibe as an option. If they do any sort of faction division for housing I would expect the Horde to get their Orc spike hut vibe. If not, then that means Horde will be getting a Human house too. Again, if it’s just at the outset and they follow through with adding additional racial themes for the interiors I don’t see it as an issue. Draenei not having actual Draenic buildings on Draenor in WoD was a sad reality. I don’t want or need 100% new assets for housing, there are untold thousands of assets in the game they could use, I just want to be able to make it look like a place my characters would reasonably take their shoes off and relax in. I’d hope for color options too at some point, I’d really like orange instead of blue or red.

-On the topic of interiors, I don’t know how deep they’re going to get with customizing interiors of homes but it’s going to be bare bones at the start, it always is. As much as I would like to be able to turn my home into a man-cave bar, I think at the outset we’ll get just a couple basic templates, if we get multiple templates at all. We certainly will be able to place trophies on the walls, but I don’t know if we’ll be placing chairs where we want and putting down centaur skin rugs on the floor at the start. Maybe some day though.

-We don’t need resource gathering in these. It would be cool if I could display some Dark Iron ingots or an ore node of my choice with a pickaxe in it as a trophy, but I don’t need or want a basement mineshaft with a daily quest to collect 10 housium ore so I can upgrade the house. That turns it into a chore. Just use it as a gold sink like everyone expects it to be, don’t tie additional currencies to it. This was an annoying problem with the Garrison dockyard.

On a final note, I’ve made peace with the fact they’re going to put stuff up on the bnet shop for housing. Prepare for the Atomic Shop treatment. Don’t even bother trying to fight it, it’s going to happen.

I full-heartedly agree with everything that’s been said by the OP.

I have roleplayed in SWoToR, Forums, WoW, Warframe, and others. Player housing was a massive hotspot for many RPer’s to come an enjoy their daily lives after a hard time of exploring the world they had traveled, aka content, grinding for a mount, etc.

I think having the option to make your house public or private is a good idea seeing as there are multitudes of events I have been to that a plethora of people show up to, especially in World of Warcraft. There are structured communities and many people in guilds have well over forty people so multiple raids would have to be made and phasing becomes an issue along with other things.

Perhaps in the future, there could be more, or this could be implemented. We are going to see the first iteration of it within the upcoming expansion and I’m hopeful for things to come. I do with we can have diversity in where we could put our house or options to make it how we want it to look besides being restricted to a certain look. I like the Suramar buildings and structures are much as the next person. Legion is my favorite expansion next to The War Within, MoP, Bfa, and Cata. It’s hard to pick which one, but I don’t want to ramble tooooo much.

If we get customizations with things, I’m going to be so happy. I’m excited for this feature to make itself known in the WoWverse and for us to explore and continue giving feedback.

Sincerely,
Nizrya, GM of The Ashen Vigil.

I, Olivia Fairfox (Gloomvixen), Group Director of Kingdom of Gilneas [Moon Guard], fully sign my support for this as well.

I’d go on to say that making houses publicly accessible like this is something I’d consider a necessary feature of any functioning housing system. You want to keep this from being garrisons again? This is a key feature for making it ‘more social.’ To do otherwise will be nothing but damaging for the game in my opinion.

Absolutely. An open home is a happy home.

RPers seem like the best group to hit up for good ideas about housing.

Using inclusive language doesn’t make you sound like the mayor of RP town.

Edgelords…gotta luv em…lol

I think Player Housing, and RolePlayer open interest “business” establishments should both exist, and be separate, or at the very least optional. As a 35 year roleplaying veteran, I want complete control of my instanced housing. Make it open or private, large or small, Gnomish or Gilnean, etc. I think giving RolePlayers an option to have a personal, but public tavern for their RP is great. I just want to make sure everything is optional, and never an all or nothing. While a great many roleplayers love the walk up RP, some of us want to have a chance to keep it quaint, and more personalized without the option of disruption from other RPers, or griefers.

:point_up_2: it is Player Housing afterall. it’d be weird to have just anyone walk in off the streets and just be wandering through your house…

AGREED! I like how SWTOR did it with the housing board. You can see the top 20 rated Strongholds, marked as Public, and not Private, and instantly be transported there. If we get Player Businesses with Housing, then either, neither, or both could be listed based on that play’er preference. So those who WANT to be found can be.

I don’t run an rp guild these days but I wholeheartedly hope they keep things phased with an open to public toggle. Keeps trolls out unlike some other games and lets you host events without the 40 cap.

Especially with cross-faction! I’ve been building my characters’ homes in the sims for a while lol. Things like Happy Home Designer/Paradise could be a fun influence for some mini games.
