Playable Murlocs, the ultimate taboo

Whether you blame the wacky transmogs or the crazy new races, or the cartoony new animation style, or how every quest is a thinly veiled pop culture reference, I think it’s safe to say WoW is not a game that takes itself too seriously anymore.

Murlocs are a beloved fan-favorite mongrel race and they’ve always shown up as products and prizes at Blizzcon. Murlocs pull in the cash.

Their backstory is pretty bare now, but I think a small retcon could make them interesting - What if Murlocs were sailors who drowned at sea and made a pact with the Drowned God N’Zoth to serve him in exchange for gills? I came up with a cool racial around this below.

The idea of factions and what constitutes a playable race within the WoW universe certainly needs to re-imagined for this to take place but I’d love for a chance to meme all over azeroth with my heirloomed out murloc warrior.

Possible Racials

  1. Amphibian
Passive cannot drown and 50% swim speed.
  2. Fishing Nets
    Passive +10 Fishing skill
  3. Drowned Altars
Altars for worshiping the coming of Nyalotha are hidden off Azeroth’s coasts. When clicked, grants the murloc bonus experience and increased stats for 2 hours.
  4. Mudskip
Activate - if you are in or close to water, you gain a jolt of movespeed and can skip across water for 3 seconds.
  5. MRGLL
Activate - 4 murlocs appear to assail your enemies.
  6. Shimmer
Passive shimmer your scales when you are struck by magic, giving you a small amount of resistance to that school.
  7. Slime Casing
Passive 1% evasion from physical hits and spell casts.
  8. Shiny Baubles
Passive increased chance to gather pearls and gemstones. Increased loot from clams and chests

Classes
Some of the Murloc classes include Shorestrikers, Huntsmen, Nightcrawlers, and Coastrunners, so Murlocs would no doubt make excellent Rogues, Warriors, and Hunters. They are also known to utilize a tribal mysticism that mirrors that of the Shaman and some kinds of Priest. Many more are adept in frost magics and thus could pass as a Mage. Some Murlocs even become Shadowcasters, opening up the Warlock class as well.

Hero Classes
When it comes to hero classes, Murlocs have a decent case for both Death Knights and Demon Hunters. Murlocs are present across all of Azeroth and in theory should make up a sizeable portion of the Scourge. There were almost certainly Murlocs in the Illidari who accompanied their Naga confidants to Outland. There is also an official Murloc Demon Hunter Murgulis in Stormheim.

There isn’t much more concrete evidence here, but by the nature of these being such extreme edgelord classes, I believe the addition of the Murloc would be a comically satisfying and brave addition that might actually bring folks to play these classes who never thought to do so before.

I would love it if murloc classes were all labeled what a murloc might call it. Like how some murlocs have certain names if they’re casters or they stab with spears.

Or that they can only speak in the murloc language. No common or orcish.

What we need is an entire aquatic based third faction consisting of:

Deep sea Murlocs

Mergoblins

Naga

Ankoan

Makrura

Sea Giants

Octopus people.

Just a few examples.

I also added some murloc inspired racials to the OP!

I’d recommend bumping this thread sometime later today. Since its early morning, not many will see this.

Not picking, but when has it ever not been like that? I kind of thought that stuff was blizzard’s bread and butter, I mean half the things said when you clicked on a unit more than twice in the RTS games would be categorized as “memes” today.

And I’ll take playable Makrura, please and thank you.

I don’t understand the alure of Murloc’s. Beside they have always been aggressive enemies of both Horde and Alliance. Things to consider

  1. How are they going to survive away from water? Or tolerate desert or snowy environments?
  2. How effective would they be in war when all they fight with are short stick spears and mini tridents. Seriously they are poor fighters, and mostly just annoying when they attack us. Definately not a good option for an ally in war
  3. Poor travel capabilities with inability to be away from water and inability to ride mounts (because most mounts would eat them)
  4. Inability to speak English. All Allies in both factions speak English. I’m sure if Murlocs had the capabilties to speak English they already would have and would have been yelling murlocs cuss words and name calling at all of us once we got within earshot.

What other suggestions would make or break Murlocs as a ally for either factions?

Nah, mon. Murlocs nearly wiped out the trolls and killed Sen’jin. I’d kill every murloc I saw if they came into this game. If they join the alliance, easy, it’s ganking time. If they join the horde? We got that new sliver of Ny’alotha toy. I hate murlocs with a burning passion. Demented mutated ugly frogs probably broke out of a lab somewhere.

  1. How are they going to survive away from water? Or tolerate desert or snowy environments?

I am afraid doesn’t hold much water. There is large bodies of water right next to Stormwind and Origrimmar. The Unshackled have been shown doing just fine here. Murlocs have also been seen across many land areas.

Away from water? Cuz they are right next to water in the pic. They amphibians and need constant moisture to survive

You may have a point with Murlocs, but with Gilgoblins and seagiants it is probably different. If we go by real life classifications those things would probably be mammals that have aquatic adaptions. Kind of like a platypus, Manatee or Blue whale.

To be fair also. Lets think of it this way. So it may be true that water is preferable to them, but land based horde and alliance races that aren’t druids also don’t do so well in aquatic environments.

King Mrgl-Mrgl has been working diligently thru many an expansion to bring the Murlocs into the fold. I’m not sure it’s a good thing for the Murlocs or not.

Linking this for good measure.

It doesn’t matter what racials murlocs get, it would be the end of world of warcraft as we know and the rise of world of murlocs. Factions wouldn’t matter as we would all be murlocs, I just hope they have acess to a tank and healer class else we’re doomed.

I think ‘MRGL’ should be passive, ‘chance when take damage’. Or ‘when entering combat’… there is never just one murloc…

Murlocs and Grummles
got my vote

I wouldn’t mind playing Naga over Murloc, but in case that comes to pass and we do get to play Murloc, I got our national theme song right here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOpdyytB3OY

as long as my murloc can wear a dress then Im all for it

Outside of being the opposite faction’s punching bag I don’t either.

FYI those passives are wrong. Here is a better example of a Murlock passive.

Murrrggg: Murgle murg muuuurg.
