Play button says game is running but it's not

I’m having this issue with both BFA and Classic since yesterday. Opening the launcher and selecting either version brings up the play button, and upon pressing it, it shows the game is running message as normal right before it drops to desktop, where normally there is a short delay while the game loads into the selection screen. Only now, it never does, just displays the desktop. The task manager shows it is running, and if left alone long enough, eventually says the application has stopped responding.
Restarting the system will occasionally let me load the game, but more often than not, the same scenario repeats. Bypassing the launcher does not load the game either. I can launch and run Diablo 3, so that makes me think the problem lies with WoW and is not a launcher issue. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

i’ve never had this problem or know if this is the fix, but maybe you need to clear your cache on the battle.net file might help. you could google "how to clear bnet cache and the same link will pop up * https ://support.activision.com/articles/deleting-old-files-from-playstation-4-and-xbox-one-consoles * good luck

" Deleting Battle.net Files

Outdated, corrupted, or missing Battle.net folders or files can cause issues with the Blizzard application and games. Follow these steps to resolve these issues:

  1. Close all Blizzard processes.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open the Task Manager.
  3. Select the Processes tab.
  4. Highlight all Agent , Blizzard Battle.net desktop app , and game processes , then select End Process .
  5. Navigate to the folder containing the Battle.net directory:
  6. Press Windows Key+R to open the Run dialogue.
  7. Type *C:\ProgramData* into the Open field and press Enter .
  8. Delete the Battle.net folder.
  9. Run Battle.net and update the game."

I had the same issue with diablo 3 and not world of warcraft, what i did was set my display resolution to 1280 x 1024 from 1920x1080 and then when i pressed play the game started working again,i believe the display setting got borked and using a lower setting let me back in to readjust the video settings.

Hey all,

Try these things and see what works:

  1. Make sure that your display drivers are updated
  2. Reset the game settings through the Battle.net desktop app
  3. Sometimes anti-virus software can prevent the game from loading up properly. If you have any running like Kaspersky, Avast, BitDefender, etc, try just temporarily disabling the real-time protection and then see if it will launch again.
  4. Try using Windowed mode to see if the game will launch in a window instead of Fullscreen:
  1. Start the Blizzard app
  2. Select the game icon on the left
  3. Click on the Options menu (below the game logo) and select Game Settings
  4. Check the box “Additional command line arguments”
  5. In the new text box, type the following command:
    -windowed
  6. Click Done at the bottom to save the changes, then hit Play to launch the game again.

Hey, thanks for responding, disabling my antivirus works! so, that’s a good thing, the bad thing is though, when I try to make my wow’s folder an exception, it will not work, and I don’t want to have to disable antivirus everytime i want to open up the game, any idea on why the exception might not be working? like is there another file somewhere that i should include (Using Avast in case this changes anything).

Had the same issue hope this helps. Classic only runs in the background

Zeliok,

Usually that means that your security definitions are out of date or the antivirus has become corrupted in some way. We aren’t getting reports of this en masse from Avast users right now. I’d use Avast’s removal tool to fully uninstall the security, restart the PC, and reinstall it. If that fails, contact their support team for more configuration advice.
