I played both rogue or lock from classic / burning crusade but I don't really remember 100% how well they perform in certain circumstances.
I plan to
- potentially raid if I can find a friendly guild
- moderate random battlegrounds
- lots of 5 man stuff
- pve server
my main concerns for rogue is pve, struggling with difficult mobs, taking damage from being close to bosses or having to run los on fights a lot to avoid cleave etc when classes are less mobile and cost dps. I know I can rogue in pvp and have fun sneaking around ninja capping bases any time!
my main concern for warlock comes from retail and is mostly a pvp thing, every time I would pvp I found myself being trained more often than not by multiple melee, melee all can shutdown spells some can immune magic/fear making me feel helpless, on the flip side I know warlock being ranged can have an easier time pve and can solo a lot of hard stuff with blue pocket tank!
I know suggesting maybe I should main one and alt the other? but I would rather alt a healing capable class but think I might not even have time/drive to level an alt!
thoughts ?
Rogues are top dps and also have a rotation that involves more than 2 buttons. They are tough to level though.
Locks are fun to level with all the demon quests, but get repetitive at end game. In pvp, they are hard to master but if you can manage it are really really good.
If you're more concerned with "lots of 5 man stuff" I'd say warlock because they are one of the only 2 classes with respectable AoE damage. People are gonna love speed clears once we all get some reasonable gear.
Rogues can top damage meters. They are good in pve and pvp. Sure they have to run out sometimes. But that is part of the fun.

good point about rotations!
in raids warlock is curse of elements (for the mages) otherwise curse of shadow then shadowbolt spam right? does it differ much in 5 man content ?
think in most cases Rogues should be slice, sinister and evis ?
Rogue rotation depends on if you play daggers or swords. Daggers generate combo points so slowly you won't be able to evis much.

In 5-man's you can dps any way you want and that you / tank can handle threat-wise. Shadowbolt is your main, but you can use all sorts of fillers depending on situation. Also, as asaid, if threat is handled, Corruption, Curse of Agony and Siphon Life are all up for grabs. Drain-Life, Immolation, talented mana-Drain for casters, Shadowburn, good aoe as well if tank can handle it (paladins and bears are your goto tank in aoe runs) Warlocks has plenty of versatile firepower in 5-man's.
