It’s a good video analyzing problems with blizzard’s current narrative design. He has pretty good opinions, he’s right about the cliff hangers that have become an issue with the story and how the story should be more digestible patch by patch and shouldn’t go for a multiple expansion narrative. Because it leaves everyone disappointed at the end. It’s much better to use the grandiose world and flesh it out over focus on specific characters.
I feel it explains a lot of the problems the community has with the current story as well as offers older material to suggest how things should be done.
Since I watched it as well, I’ll summarize the video since the OP did not.
He basically goes on to say that the story shouldn’t be going for endless cliffhangers, it does not work with WoW story telling because of the way development works in WoW. It takes years for us to even get resolutions to some of these cliff hangers. WoW story fairs way better when the narrative has easily seen narratives and conclusions that connect to each other without any cliffhanging. And that the story is way better when it focuses on utilizing the MMO design by focusing on the world instead of specific characters like The Jailer or Sylvanas.
Just pointing out if they want to use a reference video have at it, but at least try to affix a few of their own thoughts to it ya know?
Otherwise, people just seem like parrots to me… And not the cool colored kind that says off colored words. More like one that memorized outdated encyclopedia Britannicas.
My problem is everything has to be a mystery. They never reveal anything so what’s there to get excited about? You can’t build up a character when their motives are never revealed. Or if it is it’s when they die.
I have to agree, we need more character development and a human prospective ( the viewer not the in game ) If we just relayed on fact and figures ,reactions and action with nothing to have meaning in the story they would have lost most of the viewers. Cliffhangers are suppose to be to continue a story and not to end it,too many were in this game it should have been a few not this many .
Problem is most of those ended up falling flat. I loved the old gods and void theme. We finally get one to be full released and its over in a patch. I know people didn’t want a full expansion of void theme but they forget there’s two major players against void. The light forces could have come in full swing and the remnants of the legion.
The legion didn’t need to be working with us but they’re whole campaign was to make sure the void doesn’t gain a footing.
All this cryptic lore and that’s your big finale for the original threat to Azeroth? My disillusion towards their story telling happened far earlier than SL being bad. It’s been a running theme of them wasting characters and not finishing stuff they’ve written.
Regardless if I post an essay or not people won’t read that. They just want to read 2 paragraphs, look at any post that extends for longer than 4 paragraphs. It gets bad interaction because people don’t like reading for more than 2 minutes. I daresay that this also is an unoriginal comment that’s given purpose is to like farm more than provide criticism, as the flag button already exists if you believe it is overly promotional.
I watched the video, he is unhappy that it takes so long to tell the story. Unhappy that stories cross expansions which makes them take so long. Part of the quick generation: I have to have resolution NOW!
To me it feels a lot more epic to have found out about Voljin 4 years later for example - sure some may have moved on and could care less but it makes for an epic story.
This is true. Really think about this; Legion launched six years ago. We’ve been on this (is she evil?) train with Sylvanas for the better part of a decade, and the Jailer is supposed to be payoff for all that waiting.
