I’m fairly new to RPing- on WoW, at least- and am thinking of jumping into the whole deal of it with a faction that’s grabbed my interest lately. I’ve spent an hour or two going over what I could find on the topic of their order, and am wondering a few things.
First off, would it be common for a Tidesage to be an adventurer similar to other roles in Kul Tiran society? Or would they work better as supplementary to an adventuring party, for safety/religious reasons?
Is it reasonable for one to be outside of Kul Tiras? I’d been justifying it with her being on a pilgrimage of sorts, traveling to places all over Azeroth to read the waters and help with problems that communities may have as a way to broaden her horizons and gain experience after the drama of the Stormsong Valley questline leaving her order in a questionable state- but felt that might be shaky at best.
Lastly, would it be too taboo for her to ICly know a few of the skills of her class? I’m thinking of saying any of her Frost spells are actually water based, but a few of the others (food conjuring, teleportation, similar things that use the arcane) I was thinking of incorporating into her set.
Thanks in advance should anyone choose to answer these, and apologies if they seem silly or pointless, I’m just really nervous about actually getting into RPing so I want to present my character as decently as I can, haha.
Kul’Tiran ships always have a tidesage. Longer voyages probably bring more tidesages. You could easily just not go back home.
After the events in stormsong, I could definitely see a tidesage doing a pilgrimage. They could be both an active adventurer or support member.
As for other mage mechanics: tidesages seem to be more elemental based. However, nothing says you cannot also pick up arcane magic. So other aspects of the mage class would be feasible.
First off, would it be common for a Tidesage to be an adventurer similar to other roles in Kul Tiran society? Actually the tidesage are NOTORIOUS for their decadent and self-indulgent culture. The only way they are going on an adventure is to eat a gordita crunch, and thats being generous. Now begone with you, wench! (Just kidding your dumb)
I doubt it would be common for a Tidesage to become an adventurer, but, after Stormsong Valley, I can see some of them deciding to distance themselves from Kul Tiras, maybe going on a pilgrimage, like you suggested, to humble themselves and remind themselves that they are just one drop in a very wide and very deep ocean, all the while helping out in other communities.
Alternatively, they might be considering just dropping the title of “Tidesage” altogether, as a symbolic washing away of shame. After all, a good chunk of the order turned out to be corrupt and beyond redemption, they might feel it’s time for the Tidesages as an order to dissolve in the first step of penance.
Another alternative, a Tidesage could’ve just gotten a good old fashioned case of wanderlust after seeing all these other crazy races like Worgen, Draenei, Void Elves… what else could lie just over the horizon? Just beyond the prow of the ship?
Hey so, I’m one of the Mods of the major Tidesage/Tideguard community SO, I’m going to give you a link to that if you’d like to join, a link to the RPing Tidesages guide, and answer all of your questions:
A Tidesage could absolutely be of a more ‘adventuring’ sort - pilgrimages to see and encounter other religions, traveling around to offer blessings to people and cities (especially within Kul Tiras), assigned to a ship, etc. You can get more creative with this than you would think. I currently have a Tideguard (basically Sea Paladins) that I RP as escorting Tidesages to SW whenever I need to be there, because they’re attempting to negotiate more healers for a country that’s a bit low on them.
Most Tidesages are, however, part of Storm’s Wake, though I’m not going to say all are universally members. And considering all that happened, I would not be surprised if more than a few traumatized Tidesages decided to leave Kul Tiras and do some soul searching on their connection with the Tidemother.
NOPE. That is literally what 90% of Tidesage RPers do. Also, Tidesages are capable of a lot of ‘mage’ abilities that we see in game, including teleportation, blinking, and portals.
your questions are not silly, thank you for asking!

Can vouch for this community. Great place for all things Tidemother related. A lot of supportive discussions about characters go on and I’ve already made fantastic roleplay connections.
The Kul Tiran race will be opening up soon, and I believe the most appropriate class would be Shaman since you get options to manipulate actual water with your spells, although Frost Mage is the only option if you want a Water Elemental pet.
I would argue that there isn’t one “right” answer to map a class to the Tidesages.
Tidesages vary in abilities. I would say that Shaman, Frost Mage, and Monk are all good choices. Heck a case can be made that some are just Warriors in service.
