I picked herbalism and alchemy from orgrimmar and when I tried to go outside and farm herbs and make potions I dont get any points…im still at 1/75 and it says catacylsm alchemy/herbalism. Is it because I havent bought shadowlands yet? Thats my first character and Im back after 10 years off so any help is appreciated
They separated profession leveling so that each expansion is treated separate from the others. The skill listed on the professions window (default key “K”) only shows for the latest expansion you’ve trained in.
If you look at your alchemy window you will be able to see your skill levels for Outland, Northrend, Cataclysm, and so on along with one labeled Alchemy. Each of those is leveled independently from one another.
If you want to level the professions in zones such as Durotar then you should be looking at the bottom and see what your skill is out of 300. Cataclysm professions will involve travel to Vashj’ir, Twilight Highlands, etc for gathering reagents and working on combines specific to that profession. The same separation based upon expansion applies to herbalism and the various other professions. The only one it does not is archaeology.

If you go outside Orgrimmar, you are getting points in “Classic” Herbalism. Going into Herbalism in your profession tab should show points in that area. Also, you should see numbers on your chat display showing the skill points earned.
