Hey! We tried to get a rhino to tank a +10 and it was going really well! There comes a point when I’m pulling so much aggro with my heals or a dps is pulling so much aggro with damage that the pet can’t keep up.
Taunt doesn’t seem to work on bosses either. Anyone know any way to get around this? Would be great to just have a pet tank all these keys for us!
Maybe multiple hunters misdirecting to the same pet?
Or multiple hunters with pets.
I’m having trouble finding a threat meter that will show the pet’s aggro.
If I take all the talents to boost my pets damage, stomp and what have you and I keep growl on and keep using misdirection, my pet is generating barely enough aggro to keep it off me.
Hes tanking monster trash in mythics pretty easy with heals. The meter’s I’ve tried won’t show my pet. So doing the boss is kind of guess work, but I have a feeling 2 mis directions might be enough aslong as you have DPS/heals who can reduce their own aggro.
Will test more. I know they can do it.
So, growl will not work on bosses. There is no way around that. That sort of interaction was broken back in like, Cataclysm IIRC.
However, you can misdirect your pet once every thirty seconds and if you are BM, your pet should generate enough threat to out pace you.
The pet can growl trash mobs so you can make your tank’s life easier in a group setting if you find they are just getting absolutely smashed. Clefthoof with mend pet will stay alive for quite awhile.
If you want to pet tank (No actual tank) in a group setting, that will be much harder. Pet doesn’t have a good method to keep threat on multiple enemies and would need multiple misdirect / tricks of the trade to keep targets on them. Other methods for reducing threat for individual players may also be necessary.
With all of that said, you can solo current M0s and probably a few lower keys (untimed). So if you have a coordinated group with a plan, you should be able to pull this off to some extent.
Growl doubles the amount of threat generated. Without it I easily outpace my pet on that.
I was healing that pet easily during the boss fight in a +10, the only problem was my aggro from doing so.
Growl functions like a taunt. Even without it with MD and FD, you shouldn’t be outpacing your pet’s threat as BM. Most of our threat goes to our pet anyways with KC and rapid autos from pet due to frenzy x3.
Theres like no videos on this. It would be a world first I think. Hunter’s arent cutting-edge anymore?
On pet tanking? Threat isn’t as much of an issue solo, but you can make it work in a group setting. The main issue really is AOE threat and growl not working on bosses.
This was me back during cataclysm (potato quality, my apologies). I was able to make my pet tank Heroic Morchok in Dragon Soul with little issue. This was in part heavily due to the mechanics of the fight that allowed my pet to take little overall damage compared to actual player tank. Threat was also not an issue for similar reasons.
It’s not that pets aren’t capable of it, but they are squishier than actual tanks and require so much coordination with overall no benefit usually that there is no need to do this.
Pets are great for soloing dungeons and even raid bosses though.
I have sometimes left growl on so that my pet will take some hits for the tank and therefore make it a bit easier for the healer. However, tanks will frequently complain about this. I was wondering about asking at the beginning of keys. I have been testing this with getting agro, mending and then switching targets if i am concerned about the amount of incoming damage. I have considered this as a support role rather than trying to main tank it.
