So, I returned after some time away and need some input. I leveled using two cats (no tank pet), but upon reaching max level, I found Bulvinkel and Magmagan to still be a great combo. But… something seems off. Did they do away with some pets scaling to your ilevel, or is it just my imagination? I looked on Petopia and actually couldn’t find a single listing that said anything about scaling. Of course, there’s thousands to look at. Did I miss something?
I am not really sure what you are asking. Pets you tame scale to your level while leveling. Pets in the stable will be bumped up to your level when you pull them out. Pets don’t have an ilvl as far as I know.
A fresh 60 pet is gonna feel squishy until your gear gets on par with or above your content. Animal companion talent reduces the amount of leech heal you get because it splits your pets damage between the 2 pets but the leech Stat is only on your main pet
Now, I will say that at lower gear levels or when fight elites, I have found that including mend pet I to my rotation made my pets definitely less squishy. I also switch to a Clefthoof for soloing rares for the extra leech.
I’m no expert and I’ve seen people scoff at the idea that the mend pet and leech can give any significant healing, but in my hands, it made a noticeable difference. My dps is a little lower by having it as a main part of my rotation, but my pet survives longer.
Just a thought
I use mend pet if my pet seems to be taking too much damage. If it is just small damage, I don’t worry about it.
Are you asking if certain pets are more tanky? Pets were kinda made to do all similar damage now so the tenacity tank, ferocity dps pet thing is no longer always true. For soloing I use a ferocity clefthoof. It’s by far the best solo pet IMO. In PvP I use cunning raptors, either undead or regular depending on the comp. at no time do I feel the need for tenacity pets. Your wording makes it hard to know what you’re truly asking for
Important to note here that leech is only available to ferocity pets… who are much better tanks than tenacity pet (of which Spirit Beasts including Bulvinkel are part of).
For BM, Clefthooves are by far the tankiest pet you can get. Core Hounds (also exotic), Scalehides and Gorillas (available for all specs) are also all solid options as they all get a defensive ability.
If you don’t want to use a ferocity pet, prepare to spam mend pet a lot.
I apologize if this was confusing. Maybe I’ve fallen into a wormhole and ended having a Mandella thingy. But, I remember in the past, looking at Petopia to see which pets scaled, because some didn’t. Like, they used have to be leveled up. Then they changed it so they automatically leveled up. Then, they changed it so that once you hit max level, certain pets would continue to get stronger as your ilevel increased, but others didn’t. I haven’t looked at Petopia in a while, so I never noticed, but at some point, they got rid of that.
Or am I being completely looney?
I really can’t remember this ever being a thing
The only thing I can think of was sometime in Legion (maybe) there was a point where stacking mastery made your pet hit like a truck. I don’t remember the specifics.
And I may be mistaken but I seem to remember getting excited about lucking into a bunch of pieces with mastery and my pet damage was crazy and it was very fun.
With the exception of attack speed, abilities, and pet specs, any change made to pets applied to ALL pets. In the past, all pets had to be leveled up. Now all pets raise themselves to your level when you bring them out.
I know that in TBC Classic, pets gain a certain percentage of your armor, resistances, and attack power (our ranged to their melee). In retail, pets get stamina and damage from our gear increases.
In Legion, BM Hunters had Hati. They also had Dire Beast as their focus generator. We could even do a talent build where we could potentially have many beasts out at once. As I am pretty sure that Mastery would affect all of them, having a high mastery as BM would have them do a lot of damage.
Yep… it’s the wormhole, Mandela thingy… Maybe in some alternate reality the pets scaled with iLvl, but I have been playing a hunter off and on since Beta… In this reality… nope. I use dual Core Hounds and they are amazing tanks…
Tell me, I know secondary pest from Animal Companion don’t cast certain abilities. Do they still cast growl? What exactly gets cast?
The Animal Companion pet/Hati never casted Growl. They don’t cast any of their pet abilities. However, they use Kill Command, Beast Cleave, and Stomp (if talented). They are also affected by Bestial Wrath.
