I really, really, really want a Masked Tanuki pet for my gnome rogue.
She was abandoned on the streets of Stormwind as a child and her guardian murdered a bare three years after the woman took her in, so her greatest comfort is pets. But she need the right pet to go adventuring with her and, after trying several other pets who just weren’t quite right, I think a masked tanuku would be the best fit.
The only thing is the only way to get one is to pet battle and I have no idea how.
Can anyone recommend the simplest guide out there for me?
I would do the quest line starting with Varzok (if you’re Horde) or Audrey if you’re Alliance. They send you to all the beginner pet battle trainers and they give a good chunk of experience to your pets.
Man I wish there wasn’t a stupid rule where you have to have a level 25 to learn a 25 because I would just give you the pets you need to capture this guy.
No. Once you get a wild battle pet’s health low enough, you can throw a trap to try to catch them. It has a low chance to work but it goes up with each attempt. If you kill them you can’t trap them*. Aside from that, the main trouble is they can keep attacking your pet until you capture them and you also have to win the battle afterwards to keep them.
*There are a few pets (eg. Terrible Turnip, Molten Corgi, Corgi Pup) that have abilities that cannot reduce pet health below 1, which makes them great for capturing.
If you level your pet menagerie in your garrison to level 3, you get a purple stone which will let you level one pet to 25. Granted, if your toon hasn’t set foot in Draenor, this is a rather long option. If you already have at least 3 toons with garrisons, you can do this pretty easily.
Wowhead has an introductory pet batle guide, let me get a link. Here it is:
There are also a few other fansites dedicated to pet battles with lots more information on how to collect them and battle strategies for just about any pet battle.
For trainers you battle around the world, like in WQ’s and for achievements, there is likely a good set of strategies for each one on each trainer’s page on wowhead in the comments. But many will assume you have certain powerful pets, and be aware that some of those can take some work to obtain due to rarity or low RNG on when/where they spawn.
I didn’t level my pet menagerie at all but one of my characters does have the ‘Ultimate Battle Training Stone’ (and a rubber ducky. And a couple of discarded bones).
Wild pets aren’t too tricky, you should look for very cheap level 25 pets on the AH.
Once you have some you can use them to help you start catching pets!
You can also just start grinding them up from the start outside of SW from level uno but the AH is a nice shortcut.
If you never did pet battling before I think there is an NPC in SW that will get you started with a little racial pet, they may have changed things since then, my info could be so so old.
The Wowhead comment section is my go-to when I get stuck on a certain trainer. Yes, there are strats that seem very catered to certain pets, but I can usually find one that works with what I actually have, or I can find a substitute pet.
OP, I’ve read people using the Terrible Turnip to help capture pets because it has an ability to hit a pet and not kill it (leaves it at 1 hp).
Also, we just had the Pet Battle week, so I don’t know if you want to wait for the next one for more xp per win.
But yeah, there are a lot of sources/sites out there to help you. Warcraftpets is a good one. We also have a forum here dedicated to pet battles!
Good luck! I’m no master pet battler, but I do enjoy it, so I hope you have fun too!
Go to Shadowlands zones and do all the pet battles in all the zones there. Do those pet battles with level 1 pets. The Shadowlands pets then scale down to level 1 when you use all level one pets.
Collect polished pet battle charms. You get about 12-20 of those per pet battle daily in SL.
So now that you have a lot of polished pet battle charms (or tokens or whatever - I’m typing this while falling asleep because I haven’t slept all night), go to your Garrison.
Unlock the menagerie there and talk to the worgen female vendor there. She sells Ultimate battle training tokens (35 polished pet charms each).
Buy those then apply them to your pets (preferably ones that are strong against critters - when you hover your mouse over them, it will show you a green arrow going up and it will say critter, that’s the one you want).
Use your stones on them after you summon them and it will instantly upgrade them to level 25.
If you have any questions let me know and I’ll answer them when I wake up.
It’s basically pokemon. Each type has a weakness and something it’s strong against
To get a wild pet you need to beat it up but not kill it and then throw traps at it until it’s captured, but you still need to fight the 2 other pets it comes with to finish the encounter
How i used to level before the garrison was just doing the pet battle master battles in every zone (elwynn by the cabbage patch, westfall by the cart, redridge by the town, etc) you should be able to see them on your map
Wowhead has a guide of which pets to use for each encounter, i’d suggest just levelling organically and capturing new pets along the way
MoP battlepets are level 22-25 so you’ll want 3 level 25s
Pets have rarities as well, blue>green>white>grey
Blue pets are significantly stronger than than the others
Higher speed stat means the pet will take a turn faster
