Pet battles are a lesson: Vote with your time

So there’s a big freakout right now in the wake of the unfortunately timed Nintendo patent where a gamerant article went out apparently using a citation from Ion to put out there that pet battle devleopment is being walked back to match the telemetry of low engagement in the feature. It’s basically getting neutered in midnight.

I can’t post links, I’m sure you’ll find what I’m talking about. There are other threads about that part as well, so I’m gonna move past that.

What I am saying with this thread here is: Vote with your time. If you don’t like a feature, ignore/starve it. If you like a feature, play it.

Yes, this does favor the bottom end of the “pyramid is narrowest at the top” concept, duh. There are more “casually invested” than those “:musical_note:LIVE TO WIN, TILL YOU DIE :musical_note:” types, and yes that does mean that stuff like delves will get a LOT more love than the content for “the apex of the pyramid,” but that’s just how that works.

If Pet battles are being walked back purely because of engagement telemetry, people voted with their time. WoW SHOULD do better at entertaining “a majority of minority groups,” and I’m not defending this moment of failing the pet battle community here, but IF this is all just a response to engagement telemetry with the feature…

Y’all housing people: House like you’ve never housed before.

Learn from this. If you want more neighborhoods, live in and love your homes. I’ve been saying that since it showed up, but like… yeah. Archaeology discontinuation happened. Pet battles are apparently happening now, in regards to “discontinuing in response to engagement.” Nothing’s getting taken out that exists already, but expansion of features… that’s apparently a telemetry thing now.

Kinda said that before, just bringing it up again.

I don’t think there are a lot of people really upset by the news who didn’t already pet battle often

I pet battle more than most people I think and I don’t personally care; I only did it when it was the faster way of fulfilling some do X world quest requirement. I love pokémon but I didn’t enjoy pet battles that much. Just sad for my friends who like it.

And I don’t think there are a lot of people who love housing who aren’t going to do a hell of a lot of housing stuff soon.

How do I invest my time in playing Amani Trolls? I’m fine letting my house collect dust, it’s not for me, but I really need to figure out how to sink ridiculous amounts of time into being an Amani Troll.

I’m going to start on the forums. Signing off

I unsubbed and am trying to get a refund on my preorder. If they refuse I’ll try getting the bank to cancel the payment.

I feel like pet battles dying off are partly because blizzard puts the bare minimum into developing it these days. And since blizzard aren’t doing too much with the system there’s not much for players to engage with, which causes low player engagement. The snake is eating it’s own tail

Like the level cap has been 25 since the game came out. We haven’t had a new family of pets to shake up the meta. Once you have a few core teams leveled up to take on the various pet battle trainers what else is there to engage with?

I can see the same happening to housing. Once you have your ideal house designed and all this furniture unlocked what is there to work towards? Maybe the next expansion after midnight brings a new exterior and some stuff to unlock in a dungeon but is that going to be enough to keep people engaged?

Were y’all out here doing stuff you didn’t want to before?

Lol have fun buying it again in a month or two

Anything bringing up Nintendo turns my brain off. That company has fallen on its face with its rediculious actions trying to lawsuit and patent to bully others.

They re like disney a corporate glutton who no longer deserves fans

If they don’t bring pet battles back, I won’t. I literally joined WoW for pets.

Well, okay. Bye forever, I guess.

Lol now we all know you’re trolling

I kind of tapered off from pet battling, but so did Blizz I guess. Once they stopped the pet dungeons it felt like they were abandoning it. It goes the way of archaeology and first aid.

Um, no? I collect and battle pets. I prefer WoW over Pokemon because you never lose access to your pet collection with new expansions and still have a social factor. It also has better PvE than Pokemon has had in recent generations, and I don’t like PvP.

Sure, and that’s a sound logic, but it doesn’t account for the fact that each new expansion since Legion provided less and less battle pet content for us to engage in.

I spend a LOT of my ingame hours engaged with battle pet content…but they haven’t been giving us any!

Almost all of the time I’ve spent on battle pet content is time spent in content from previous expansions. And that’s fine.

But we don’t get to drain the pool, allow grass to grow in the empty hole in the ground, and then bring in a backhoe the following summer to remove the pool altogether and say we’re doing it because “nobody was swimming in it.”

Truthfully, this is a theory. There is no real indication that patent has anything to do with Blizzard’s decision.

So…make it seem even less popular than Ion has said it is? That doesn’t seem…very logical…to me.

How does that term even apply to this situation? The system isn’t being ‘walked back’, it is being completely nerfed. The only way it could be any more nerfed is if they took out every single battle pet in the game - which they can’t do because some people actually paid real money for them.

My guildies are devastated the same way I was when they yoinked Archaeology.

This makes me concerned about stuff like PvP, which naturally has much less investment than PvE.

Are they gonna remove it?

Obviously not now, but in the future? (They’re adding a new 40v40 Epic BG in Midnight.)

That is my main pillar in WoW, lol.

And yeah I liked pet battles, so this stings. Just like when Archaeology stopped getting updates.

Just am concerned with side activities being removed as a whole- not everything is going to be popular.

Are they gonna remove Delves two expansions from now, if they fall off?

What if the Prey system takes all those people away, so they stop doing those? Is it effectively dead content?

Same vibes.

tbc I am not making a statement that “nobody cares” – I’m sure I’d be upset if it was a system I really cared about

I just suspect most of your guildies, like mine, actually DID spend a lot of time pet battling as reasonable. I’m not sure who the message of “do the things you love for metrics” is for.
