The day this happens is the day participation goes through the roof especially if they change incentives and ways to do dailies etc on the phone. They’ve done similar before in previous expansions with another system but I would love to be able to pop on and pvp pet battle for a couple of minutes at work.
If blizzard actually spent some time with it and added a ranking system as well as ability to enter tournaments and ways to do all of the bigger pve pet events from your phone, I really don’t see how it wouldn’t be a success for blizzard. Just apply a lot of the logic from hearthstone and how it functions and it’s an easy win for them.
I also think the influx of participation would force more balance around the mini game which would benefit everyone.

I have no objection to PvP on phones - although “Don’t you guys have phones?” didn’t workout so well for Blizzard last time - but not PvE.
Myself, I wouldn’t want to think about PvP without Rematch and Derangement’s (now continued and available again on Curseforge as “Pet Battle Cooldowns”) but if you can do it, good for you!
PvE, though, is a different matter. The travel and the environment are a key part of PvE, and putting it on phones would eliminate any reason to PvE in-game.
Especially with their new owner, “success for blizzard” is now defined as making more money. Doubtful they’re going to spend thousands of hours of developer time redesigning pet battles radically, for both iOS and Android platforms, so someone can sneak in a fight at work while the boss isn’t looking. At least not unless players are willing to pay for it.
This topic pops up regularly on the forum at least once a year for the past decade and you notice we still can’t do pet battles on our phones.
I think it would monetize itself. There are already pets you can buy and it’s pretty clear to me that the more people participating in this portion of the game would drive more purchases of pets which in turn would drive more investments into new pets in the store that will likely be similar to every other game where the new class/pet is ever so slightly stronger for a couple of months before it’s nerfed.
I play on my phone all the time. Remote desktop is not against ToS and I have special UI just for pet battle PVP. It’s fun, but allot of extra hoops. And really the only thing I get out of it is playing matches. No I’m ladder or rewards or seasons.
