Periodic disconnects with no network issues

Wanted to spread the word from the EU forums about this issue I’ve seen very little mention of. Here’s a thread from someone much more tech savvy than me with a full diagnosis.

The gist of it is that every so often, maybe once every hour or two, the game just instantly disconnects. One second I’ll be playing and interacting with the world just fine (meaning, no latency issues appear beforehand), and the next I’ll get disconnected (WOW51900319).

It’s happened ever since the launch of classic, and I’ve noticed no issues with my network when it happens. No hiccups or ISP issues.

I’ve disabled all addons and it still happens. I’ve flushed my DNS and it still happens. I’ve deleted my cache and it still happens. There’s no consistent trigger for it that I can see. It’s happened when just standing in Org, running around on my mount, while I’m in combat, or gathering a node.

From what the above linked thread shows, it looks like an issue towards Blizzard’s side of things.

Is anyone else having this issue, or has managed to solve it? I’d rather not have this happen in the middle of a raid. Would be pretty annoying for it to happen as I get the bomb from Baron Geddon.

I am having this same issue. It’s very frustrating.

Both my husband and I are having the same issues.

Exact same issue, would love a response. Has been happening since launch of classic.

Same issue since day one. Today was the worst. I got fed up with trying to play and dying because i was logged out during a mob fight. I dialed down my graphic settings. Maybe a marginal improvement. Ive now cleared my cache in battlenet, disabled add ons. Only difference is:

Playing on the weekend and busier server ( a pacific zone pve server)

Had a tv show streaming in the background on Prime at same time today. (i usually don’t while playing but i used to play POE & Warframe all the time while watching tv streamed with rarely a disconnect. Same laptop, same provider, a wired connection with solid up down speeds, i haven’t had any noticeable lag. Only difference is…playing WOW vs other games.

Will see what tomorrow brings and watch this thread.

Was better after clearing the cache but getting more frequent again a few days later. My son says he can see me being disconnected when he’s on pretty frequently. He and his friends rarely get a disconnect he tells me. And he’s on a busier server than I am so I don’t think that’s the issue. I built his computer so I know it has a much more powerful graphic device then my laptop. I’m guessing it’s the same with his friends. I have turned down my laptop graphic settings quite a bit hoping that might provide the solution but seems not this is the only game I play so I am not going to invest in another computer just to play this game when I can’t even be sure that’s the problem.

A Blizzard rep replied in the EU forum post that I linked too, saying (among other things) that there might be an issue on their end (but also maybe issues between the OP and Blizzard). They said they’ll pass on the info to their team. Go ahead and read the post for yourself.

Same issue! and always in a battleground that I am winning this week. ugh!

After trying to clear wow game caches, turning down graphic settings & lowering both foreground & background fps & disabling addons with no help for the disconnect problem, i came across a blizzard suggestion to trying enabling ipv6 in network ( which blizzard suggests otherwise could make game less stable). So i did it anyway but maybe more importantly in blizzard troubleshooting tips i flushed my ip dns. Well…for the first time in DAYS i was able to play for 3 hours with 0 disconnects ( add ons enable and my fps settings at 100 & 30 but graphic settings conservative). I have also sent files to blizzard before i did that for review, but i hope with the dns flush i found my solution!!! Tomorrow will be another day and maybe more telling. I will report back here.

How do you flush your IP DNS?

Thanks in advance

this simple:

Option 1 – Windows Command

To reset the DNS resolver cache, perform the following steps:

  1. Select the “ Start ” button, then type “ cmd “.
  2. Right-click “ Command Prompt “, then choose “ Run as Administrator “.
  3. Type ipconfig /flushdns then press “Enter “. (be sure there is a space before the slash)

(copied from online article. i don’t recall putting space before the slash when i did it. you will get a confirm that it has been fliushed. it won’t hurt anything to do this btw. just sorts out how your computer connects to websites and servers in general.

Thanks very much,

For what its worth all I did was enable IPV6 and the disconnections stopped!

If they start again i will flush the dns but it looks like the IPV6 is the issue!

just got a dc, so i tried the dns flush will report back

Yeah I’m sceptical its the IPV6 setting. In all honestly it could be a bunch of different things and thats why i proceeded with sending a report to blizzard. They require a dxdiag and msinfo32 report apparently to begin looking into the issue particular to your computer.

Here’s the first response from Blizzard on the issue. The dns flush was one of their recommendations but I will be trying selective startup as well. Just this past Sunday the modem router was rebooted so I see no reason to do again. There is another user in the house I rent who is constantly streaming tv shows and probably doing a lot of web searching but our connection should be easily up to the task of multiple users. I have played other games in the same environment for 2 yrs with virtually zero disconnects. I am going to send them the other info requested as well.

Here is the response:
Howdy Terry,

Tech Specialist Rainmithwen at your service! I understand that WoW is having major issues staying connected. I know how disheartening it is when a game just won’t stay connected. Never fear though I have an excellent idea of what’s happening.

The cause of the internet cutting out when playing WoW will be caused by bandwidth limitations or prioritization issues with the home network. Since it does take up more utilization than videos, streaming, or at times other games since WoW is very sensitive with network data. There’s a few steps to address these concerns!

• Based on the information you sent us, we’re seeing a lot of your system resources being eaten by other programs and this could be causing the problems you are seeing. You’ll want to restart your system in Selective Startup mode to knock those out and free your system to run like you want it to.
Press the Windows Key+R on keyboard
Type MSCONFIG
Under General (first tab), check Selective Startup
Uncheck Load Startup Items (keep other options with a checkbox)
Go to Services tab (third tab)
Click/keep checkmark in Hide all Microsoft Services (at the bottom, under scroll area)
Click Disable All
Press Apply and Okay
Restart computer

• Let’s reset your computer’s TCP/IP and Winsock. This can resolve basic issues with browsing or connection issues.

  1. Right click on your Windows Start Menu, and select “Command Prompt (Admin)” or just search for Command Prompt and right click, run as administrator.
  2. Now type in or copy and paste, “netsh int ip reset” Press Enter.
  3. Then do the same for “netsh winsock reset”
Once it’s complete, you’ll need to restart the computer to complete the reset.

• DNS Flush. This will refresh how the internet finds things, basically it refreshes the phonebook for the internet.
Press the Windows Key+R on your keyboard
Type: cmd
Press Enter
Type: ipconfig /flushdns
Press Enter
Exit the Command Prompt after it tells you that you’ve successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache

• It looks like there may be some network issues that could be causing this, so we’ll want to go ahead and do a Power Cycle to help clear those up. It sounds complicated, but it’s just a fancy way of saying “Reboot”. Basically, you shut down the computer, unplug the power from your modem/router, wait 30 seconds, and plug them back in, turn the computer back on and voila! You have Power Cycled your network.

Hopefully everything is working good for you now after trying the steps above, but if the disconnecting continues we’ll need to try a few more steps. To help narrow down what’s happening and figure out the best new steps to try I’ll need some new information on the connection. The files that we need have been included below along with how to gather them. Thank you in advance!

MTR, this will provide us a detailed look at the connection and can help us identify issues from location all the way to our servers. This step can take a little bit of time, thank you for doing this for us!

I really appreciate the time taken to work on this with us Terry! I do hope the disconnecting has gone away so you can get back to playing WoW. Don’t hesitate to reach back out to us if the issue persists or if anything else comes up we can help with. If everything is working, you’d be helping me out if you could close the issue for me on the support site. Thanks again!

Very happy to report i played for 3 hours this aft with zero disconnects. Further, I left IPV6 on, fps settings at 100/30 for foreground/background respectively and turned up the graphics settings from 3 to 8. I did not redo the ip flush or reset of modem today. I did do all the other steps suggested. Game was much more pleasant to play!

I’ve tried all and still getting issues.

Also noticed that it tends to happen more often when I am in discord? Could that be related?

Discord overlay is a frequent cause of issues.

That being said, I see lots of complaining in this thread and 0 actionable information. Post winmtr reports, tell us what isp you’re on, give information. Right now no one can respond because you are not sharing any information.

i don’t think your MTR shows an issue. you want to see a network mess, take a look at mine. 80 plus percent packet loss, yet i’ve had no dropouts in 3 days:
