Here’s the first response from Blizzard on the issue. The dns flush was one of their recommendations but I will be trying selective startup as well. Just this past Sunday the modem router was rebooted so I see no reason to do again. There is another user in the house I rent who is constantly streaming tv shows and probably doing a lot of web searching but our connection should be easily up to the task of multiple users. I have played other games in the same environment for 2 yrs with virtually zero disconnects. I am going to send them the other info requested as well.
Here is the response:
Howdy Terry,
Tech Specialist Rainmithwen at your service! I understand that WoW is having major issues staying connected. I know how disheartening it is when a game just won’t stay connected. Never fear though I have an excellent idea of what’s happening.
The cause of the internet cutting out when playing WoW will be caused by bandwidth limitations or prioritization issues with the home network. Since it does take up more utilization than videos, streaming, or at times other games since WoW is very sensitive with network data. There’s a few steps to address these concerns!
• Based on the information you sent us, we’re seeing a lot of your system resources being eaten by other programs and this could be causing the problems you are seeing. You’ll want to restart your system in Selective Startup mode to knock those out and free your system to run like you want it to.
Press the Windows Key+R on keyboard
Type MSCONFIG
Under General (first tab), check Selective Startup
Uncheck Load Startup Items (keep other options with a checkbox)
Go to Services tab (third tab)
Click/keep checkmark in Hide all Microsoft Services (at the bottom, under scroll area)
Click Disable All
Press Apply and Okay
Restart computer
• Let’s reset your computer’s TCP/IP and Winsock. This can resolve basic issues with browsing or connection issues.
- Right click on your Windows Start Menu, and select “Command Prompt (Admin)” or just search for Command Prompt and right click, run as administrator.
- Now type in or copy and paste, “netsh int ip reset” Press Enter.
- Then do the same for “netsh winsock reset”
Once it’s complete, you’ll need to restart the computer to complete the reset.
• DNS Flush. This will refresh how the internet finds things, basically it refreshes the phonebook for the internet.
Press the Windows Key+R on your keyboard
Type: cmd
Press Enter
Type: ipconfig /flushdns
Press Enter
Exit the Command Prompt after it tells you that you’ve successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache
• It looks like there may be some network issues that could be causing this, so we’ll want to go ahead and do a Power Cycle to help clear those up. It sounds complicated, but it’s just a fancy way of saying “Reboot”. Basically, you shut down the computer, unplug the power from your modem/router, wait 30 seconds, and plug them back in, turn the computer back on and voila! You have Power Cycled your network.
Hopefully everything is working good for you now after trying the steps above, but if the disconnecting continues we’ll need to try a few more steps. To help narrow down what’s happening and figure out the best new steps to try I’ll need some new information on the connection. The files that we need have been included below along with how to gather them. Thank you in advance!
MTR, this will provide us a detailed look at the connection and can help us identify issues from location all the way to our servers. This step can take a little bit of time, thank you for doing this for us!
I really appreciate the time taken to work on this with us Terry! I do hope the disconnecting has gone away so you can get back to playing WoW. Don’t hesitate to reach back out to us if the issue persists or if anything else comes up we can help with. If everything is working, you’d be helping me out if you could close the issue for me on the support site. Thanks again!
