If you look at your retail > WTF > Account > Accountname > folders for each server, do you have copies of every single character in the folder for each server, whether that character is on that server or not?
If you haven’t had any memory leak issues, do you have only a few characters/all your characters on one server?
I’ve got characters on eight different servers. Take this character, who’s on Arathor, for example. She’s the only one I have on Arathor.
But if I go to my World of Warcraft folder and drill down to the Arathor server, I have over 60 folders - one for each character on my entire account - where I used to have one, for Rannveig.
And those same 60+ character folders are copied seven more times - into each server’s folder - which is ridiculous and not the way Blizz has ever done things before.
Had the error once yesterday. Flew into Valdrakken and couldn’t land since there were no NPCs. Killed the game and saw the error dialog under the game window.
Anyway, I currently have 27 active characters. Twelve of those are Remix characters. All but 6 are level 70. I don’t know how many deleted. All active characters are on a single server. I deleted my cache, interface and wtf folders to start from scratch with the “original” pre-patch. Haven’t looked at WTF since WOW started automatically recreating it.
My immediate assumption is that it’s caching the surface-level character data so it can display the same character list regardless of what realm you actually have selected.
I think the multiple character folders started with Tuesday’s update, too, but I’m not certain - I only go into WTF to copy keybinds, and last time I checked (maybe ten days ago?) this duplication issue hadn’t existed.
If the game is writing to all those folders, who knows what other weirdness it’s doing?
There were big memory leak problems a few years ago. They are back for some users now. I have read (but cant quickly find the reference) that it is one particular graphics card causing the problem and it needs a driver update.
I haven’t crashed yet, but I do have copies of various characters spread across servers, even ones that have never moved servers before. So I dunno what’s going on there.
I heard about it and was like, “Oh, that’s weird.” And I had no problem while hanging about, RPing, or being idle for a long while. Then I went and did some of the Echoes to level an alt and after a while my game decided to hit the crash when Jaraxus spawned in so I was hit with the “YOU FACE J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J-J–WoW is not responding”
It was inconvenient, startling, and kind of funny so that was the sign to take a break for the night.
I just looked at mine and I had characters in there that had been deleted before Tuesday. I just deleted them since I don’t need them anymore.
You can just delete your entire WTF folder and tell it to start over. Your Blizzard Layouts, action bars, keybinds, talents, etc… will be repopulated from the server. You’ll have to reconfigure any addons though. Removing the WTF folder is frequently the first suggestion from Blizzard Support.
