I’m surprised that it didn’t take the media by storm. I mean when John Paul died, I remember it was a big deal. I know they passed away a few days ago, but I thought about bringing up the two icons in this forum. They didn’t get the chance to see 2023

Yep, I remember. With all due respect to the man, here’s a snippet of convo I had with a co-worker the Monday after John Paul died (he’d died the previous Friday):
Co-worker: Did you hear the news?
Me: Yep. That’s one dead pope.
Co-worker: He ain’t gettin’ any deader.
Anyway, I’m not Catholic and I’m not a soccer fan, but it does seem strange to have heard almost nothing about either. I wonder if it has to do with streaming services and indie news outlets taking over the role broadcast TV had back in John Paul’s time.
In any case respects to both, and may they rest in peace.
