So i left my old server because there wasn’t a population to run any content outside of guild raiding, why would I move my characters when the easiest solution is to introduce sharding?

Because this is Classic, and sharding is not Classic.
The solution is to offer free transfers off the overpopulated servers. It’s a bandaid that needs rippin!

As I understand it, sharding makes a separate instance of an area (like Elwynn?) so a given area isn’t so crowded with people that you can’t get stuff done. Layering does the same thing but on a realm level. However, I recently was given to understand that layering does not change the population cap on a given server, hence the queues.

its better because your not using the entire World, your only using zones, its better for server performance, and allows more players into a single server.

Sharding doesn’t fix it. The server still has a capacity size. On retail it’s fixed with cross realm zoning/sharing etc etc.

What it does do is tear the social fabric. Similar to how megaservers do. Which is why it’s so great that they’re currently inhospitable.
