PC feels unsmooth

Not sure about load temps. It is a stock cooler - don’t have a cpu cooler never have overclocked (don’t know how)

Hard drive is an ssd 120 gb I have witcher 3 installed on it
pretty sure witcher 2 is installed on it as well

The drive is 6 years old as well has the OS installed on it. Was orginally Windows 8 and went through a windows 10 upgrade, like I said before never reformatted it

edit: actually I think the witcher 2 is installed on the 1tb hdd

hmm well SSD’s tend to lose performance as they reach capacity

that said, a fresh install won’t hurt, especially if it was an upgrade.

you should really check the temperatures, download hwinfo64 and let it run while you play and report back the max CPU temps.

stock intel cooler was never amazing, but in 6 years it’s likely the paste has dried up and you need a good cleaning on the fan and heatsink as well.

It could be my imagination

Wouldn’t fraps let me know if the framerate was dipping as a result of the things you said?

My main concern is will I be happy if I purchase a new computer similiar to the one I posted in my other thread, or will I be disappointed? (thats for 1440p)
Cos otherwise I might just stick with console seeing as xbox series x is just around the corner

Does fraps show frametime as well?

I have only used afterburner and others that show frametime, which is more indicative visually of how your performance feels.

Afterburner also shows CPU and GPU temps and utilization

I can tell you right now that moving up from a haswell 4/4 chip to something modern you’ll feel a difference in smoothness.

A big reason is security mitigations hit haswell era chips much harder than the newer processors, so if you’ve updated those it could be impacting your performance as well.

whether you enjoy it as much as an xbox series x, i can’t say.

I’d say a powerful computer is more useful than an x-box series x, especially since games are all cross platform, and getting a new PC will also serve to let you play PC games.

a PS5 is more compelling due to the exclusives, if i were choosing a console.

Thanks for help again

Just out of curiosity what do you mean by 4/4 chip? I know its 4 cores but not sure what the other 4 is

sorry bit of a noob here

I want to go for xbox series x because of the backward compatibility for witcher 3 also because of the controller and graphics.

To answer your question:
No fraps just shows framerate (don’t know what frametime is)

  1. x/x is cores/threads. old i5’s didn’t have hyperthreading, it’s an efficiency feature that improves performance in a lot of applications and allows the OS to help schedule processes better. in some games there’s a huge uplift, and it helps with multitasking as well. Intel calls it hyperthreading and amd calls it simultaneous multi threading. in 2020, almost all the CPUs released have HT/SMT.

  2. Windows PCs have native support for xbox controllers, and every game you can buy for xbox you can buy on windows store. Legacy games, I can’t help you with but if you already have the consoles for those games, then you have access to them and moving forward you can play all xbox games that come out on pc. There are no exclusives. I get that Xbsx will have better hardware than many PC’s, and especially for the price, but if you have a gaming PC you have access to the xbox library and pc library.

  3. Get hwinfo64 and run it sensors only and report back cpu frequency and temps, or use MSI afterburner instead of Fraps.
