PC fans rev up randomly

posted this in tech forums but no response so I’ll try here since there’s more traffic.

does anyone else’s PC do this when playing WoW? Sometimes my system will, at random times, start revving like some fans start to speed up…I’m pretty sure it’s the GPU fans but when I look at MSI after burning it doesn’t seem to be running particularly hot…maybe 58-62 degrees C. This is a new computer and I’ve never had a gaming PC that was actually relevant. I have also never played any games on Max settings until now…So could it be that at times when the GPU is just working harder and needs to cool down a bit?

my rig
i9-13900kf
rtx 4070
32gb ram
1tb m.2 (where my games are installed)
also running an AIO for CPU cooling.
for airflow I have 2 intake one rear exhaust and 2 fans on the radiator…is this sufficient or should I add more

thx for any help

wrote this a few days ago on tech forums so forgot to update but now it seems to be reving up fans all the time…like it constantly fluctuates up and down.

Most fans just kick on when your comp or GPU starts warming up. They are mostly just sitting in idle, then kick on under load. It’s nothing really to worry about. As of right now, my GPU fans are off, but if i load up WoW or OW, they will kick on a little while after playing some. As for your temps those are pretty good. Only really need to worry if your touching in the high 80s.

If you want something to check your overall systems temps and other. HWMonitor by CPuid is pretty good. You don’t want your CPU getting into the 80s like “80-85c” could be bad and something to worry about. GPUs are around the same. Best temps running around are around the 60s and sometimes 70s C.

thx for the reply

I just read that WoW (being an older game) uses more of the CPU than the GPU and seems to rev more when I’m in a populated area like Voldrakken. When in Org the fan speed seems quieter but it was still noticeable. So I don’t think it’s the GPU reving up it’s probably the CPU. Also after monitoring the TEMPS I can see that one of my cores spiked up to 74 degrees C so it makes sense if WoW relies more on the CPU than GPU.

I also tested other games and on initial start up it tends to rev up a lot but tapers down. I think I’m just not use to having this type of beefy setup. I went from an i5-4590 1070 to an i9-13900 4070 so it could just be getting adjusted to the noises

A lot of times the software will turn them on during a spike. The fans might stay on for a minute but thats normal. Usually you have to see a performance graph or something to notice the spike in activity.

Well if you already have MSI afterburner you can use that to make a custom fan curve Also look into under volting all Intel i9 12900k,13900k and the newer waste of money 14900k use an absolute crap ton of power to hit high clocks and it’s just a waste.

More power equals more heat which makes fans run louder , My Amd 5700x is under volted and under clocked at 4.2ghz and my temps dropped 20°C and I also did the same thing on my 4070 Ti and the temps dropped over 20°C

Use msi afterburner for under volting the gpu and you will go into your motherboards bios to under volt the cpu and there is plenty of YouTube videos out there showing you how to do all that I highly suggest Tech yes city he’s awesome

thx I will watch some videos

I have never messed with voltage and clocking, I’ve never been too confident in it. The most I’ve done is just transfer all the pc parts from one tower to another and change the thermal paste on the cpu when needed.

I’m sure once I watch those vids though i’ll have a better understanding…thx again :+1:

Its just your cpu cooling itself it’s completely normal.
