and who ever came up with the orders should feel bad. You are the epitome of everything that adds tedious, boring, unfun and frustrating stuff to this game. It’s not “haha funny” that the patron orders rarely include materials. The fact that us, the players, aren’t even allowed to do public orders without including all the materials shows that you know how annoying that was in DF.
What do you mean?
You don’t like getting knowledge locked behind crafting items you’re not specialized in or having to spend 30k+ on materials to get some of the dust?
My main problem with them is that you can be a leather character, fully specced into crafting leather, and you still get mainly mail piece work orders.
The majority of them being rank 2/3 the first time I looked at them is a bit irritating, but I suppose at least that will resolve itself later as crafting progresses.
Rank 1-2 while at X lower skill level (or number of profession points already earned?), and then bump it to 2-3 after that limit might be a bit more friendly to use at least early on.
I had an order for a rank 4 spark craft. That was a real odd one.
I think patron orders are good in theory. After all, fulfilling crafting orders to get your knowledge, and getting more of it per week just make sense.
But for me personally as a Blacksmith, I’m being asked to make several epic items I can’t even make yet, and qualities I couldn’t even if I did have them, that would require several thousands of gold to craft.
It’s a little botched and needs some addressing.
They need to change patron orders to:

Not give orders for things you don’t have recipes for

To provide most (but not all) of the materials. I don’t think they should provide all the materials, there should be a cost for getting acuity and KP, but not at a level of spending 10,000+ gold on the AH

Don’t demand such quality that it eats my concentration
I save my concentration for patron orders, so I don’t have to buy more expensive mats.
I got a crafting order last week for an item with a pattern that only drops in the raid.
I think they are fine as a bonus but to depend on them to get AA is bad design. Especially when the majority of the ones I have I can’t make or don’t have the plans for. Or the plans are grossly overpriced in the AH.
I think the whole gating professions behind the need to do work orders is bad. So I have to do work orders either way that almost no one provides materials for and almost never tip to cover the materials
The Patron system in general is a good idea, but the quality and resources should be looked at based on your current level. At least two of my professions I am still sending myself personal work orders because there just none those professions can make because of the requirements.
I had thought when they announced the system it would provide more of the materials and just be an alternative way instead of sending yourself your own work orders but at least that way I could make more money by selling it on the auction house.
I’ve gone back to having my alts place work orders. I’ll wait till later when crafting mats become more abundant and my skills are higher before I start bothering with patron orders again.
I not going to keep filling orders that cost 100s if not 1000s of gold in mats for 50-60 gold in payment.
You’ll be so far behind in acuity though, won’t be able to get any of the good stuff
It’s hard to say if Blizzard make a mistake and needs to adjust them or they put them into the game as a Gold sink.
Did two of them myself. Wasn’t impressed. Will probably just skip crafting orders altogether this expansion… Just make stuff for myself as I go along.
They could be tuned a bit. I’ve had a few orders that would cost a lot in reagents or weren’t possible to do, but I’d say I’ve completed about 75% or more of the patron orders I’ve had on my two main characters in the last week. I’m willing to invest more in the work orders that give the knowledge points or the 30 acuity as rewards.
It is frustrating when they give you things that you haven’t specced into or patterns that are raid drops or take acuity to purchase like the profession bags, but that will likely smooth out some over the next couple weeks. But still, perhaps limiting how many orders can be in each category might be nice as it guarantees you’ll be able to at least do some of them. Like out of 10 orders, 2 could be purple crafted gear, 2 could be blue profession tools, 2 of something else profession specific, and then 4 that are guaranteed to be doable by pretty much everyone.
I had this same experience. Most things for BS have been 4k gold for all the mats and the tip is 45g. Plus the disappointment in opening one of the bags to get a measly 5 ore or leather that I cannot even use.
The knowledge, acuity, and rewards are not even close to worth it when it costs so much more as the crafter. I shouldn’t need to put time and gold into a profession to pay other people to help me make items for other people and get almost nothing out of it.
good points and in the future some of them are worked on. being asked to make items that are not possible in the short playtime that a few players have right from the low crafting levels. i’m still sending guild orders for stuff i can make. out of all the orders i can count on 1 hand that All mats are there to make the item.
its a good start but this system needs to looked at to have 2/3’s of the orders in the range of the person crafting level.
NPC orders are generally good imo, however here are the issues:
- You cannot craft out of your Warbank (hopefully fixed in 11.0.5)
- Most of the orders provide 0 mats. Unless the order requires 2 or less different crafting mats (like Bismuth Bolts needing 4 Bismuth) the NPC should provide some of the mats.
- Knowledge Points tied to orders that require specific specs to unlock (or unluck the ability to use additional reagents) OR very high unrealistic qualities (like Q4 crafted spark gear).
If Knowledge Points are just tied to orders like Quality 2 Bismuth Bolts and other crafted items that anyone can make regardless of spec the system will be alot better.
