I have been playing WoW off and on since 2008. I mostly was active in bc-wotlk, quit came back in late cata, quit again and just returned about 5 months ago.
I also play Path of Exile and I’m starting to gravitate more towards PoE. For those of you that don’t know, PoE is an arpg with gritty diablo 2 like graphics. It is free with a huge cosmetic mtx shop, I spend more money in PoE than I do WoW.
With Path of Exile, I could leave for 3 months come back and there is new content. WoW is the same no matter what. “Oh look, another raid.” I am more of a pvp person, and pvp is mostly the same throughout the expansion. I think BFA is an ok expansion. It is just boring. I don’t have any interest in the raids this xpac. More to the point, my dps and patience both kind of suck. When you really don’t care about the raids or the content, (it all feels like a chore) then there is little motivation to improve. I also hate how all guilds require discord, which angers me greatly. Use the stupid voice chat feature in game, its so much easier. I ran the normal battle of dazar lor or whatever the stupid raid is called. We were on conclave with a lot of randoms. One tank didn’t want to join discord and the next one didn’t have it setup right. Two wipes. THEN, It is simply amazing to me how many bad randoms there are. Run to big bird thing when it lands so you don’t get hit, right? Half the raid didn’t even do that. (Everyone in my guild did though). Zero patience for stupid.
My biggest complaint is the lack of original content in WoW. Its all the same. Every xpac. Pvp or raiding. When a new Path of Exile league or xpac drops, it is still the same (kill monsters for loot) but the amount of creative ways GGG churns out the old formula keeps players on their toes. An endless dungeon check. Capture monsters for crafting recipes check. Go back in time and setup the layout of ancient temple by killing certain bosses, check).
I also like how PoE has a system where I can make own unique character with a passive skill tree with over 1000 passives. In WoW all classes are the same. Boring. Idk, maybe I’ve just outgrown WoW, or its just a stale game.

The folks that enjoy WoW the most typically don’t play with randoms. They play with guilds and/or with friends. The people that leave WoW probably aren’t leaving their friends or their family-like guilds. They may take breaks, but they won’t quit the game unless something turns them completely off from it.
You mentioned your more of a PvP person. Blizzard really did a number on PvP this expansion, so I don’t expect many serious PvP players to stick around for long. I’m more of a PvE player so I find a challenge in working together with others in a raid or dungeon situation and overcoming certain obstacles for the possibility of a reward. It’s the whole teamwork dynamic that keeps me playing.
PoE and WoW is apples and oranges, though agree on new content.
But PoE Vs Diablo, PoE wins hands down and David Brevik has had a hand in PoE making it more like D2 is many ways. Diablo is stale and needs more content to keep up.
FFXIV Vs WoW, FF wins imo what it lacks in rendered graphics it makes up for in redoable content(esp not needing alts), character customization, gameplay, professions and above all the community isn’t toxic nor exclusionary.

Isn’t Path of Exile more easily compared to Diablo.
This reminds me of the threads on D3 forums where people basically write out why PoE is better, but for some reason continue to play Diablo 3.
I love Poe best Arpg on the market.

Why is a raven like a writing desk?
Ooh, not that Poe, oops
Grim Dawn is a pretty good one too. Worth checking out.

You can’t really compare WoW, an mmorpg, to an action RPG. They’re different genres with different standards.
Also, Path of Exile is brutally unforgiving, if you don’t know exactly what you want on building your character you can easily hose yourself and wipe away countless hours of levelling.
This is fair , but at least call it what it is, cause WoW is not a mmoRPG anymore its a MMO.
Yeh it is but like all point based rpg’s the first time you play you royally screw your character up but no matter how bad you do it the chances of you being able to finish the story is still high. Its also what makes it fun for the people who enjoy point based rpg’s
Heck with PoE. Unless you are dirt poor, Grim Dawn is far superior as an alternative to WoW.
Neither is really an alternative to WoW, though. :\
They are two wildly different games. Comparing them would be like comparing street fighter to call of duty
Very true:) But i love me some Grim Dawn while i wait for WoW servers to turn back on!
It’s a great game, yeah. Better with friends, but still reasonably fun solo.
this league sucks for poe, i uninstall.i hope they keep nerfing melee … fun
PoE. I rather have Marvel Heroes back
Well, PoE is better than Diablo.

I played PoE. What does new content even look like in a game that is like an endless Island Expedition? Wow’s content is a hundred times more diverse than Path of Exile. I’m not even sure your complaint is relevant when comparing PoE versus WoW. Completely different games. If your bar for new content and differentiation is PoE, then that’s just strange to say the least. I noticed almost no RPG components to PoE. It’s just hop one somewhere and kill stuff over and over and over again. Island Expeditions made me think of PoE when I first did them.
