Since WoW adopted a shorter expansion cycle beginning with Dragonflight, considering all patches from BF through TWW, the mean release interval is 198.33 days and the median is 186 days, with the median being the more reliable observed value for estimating Blizzard’s current release cadence.
Alternatively, a simpler estimate is to use the observed range of recent patch intervals. Since Dragonflight, the shortest interval was 155 days (Patch 10.0) and the longest was 293 days (Patch 10.2), suggesting that future major patches are likely to be released within approximately 155–293 days.
I don’t mean this as criticism either (we can certainly disagree) but I think it’s a bit naive to take that statement at face value.
Saying they don’t have a public cadence doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t have an internal development structure. A company the size of Blizzard simply can’t operate without long-term planning. Game development requires overlapping production cycles: while one patch is being finalized, another is already in active development, and the next expansion is well underway. That’s how large software projects are typically managed.
I’m also not trying to predict the exact date of the next patch. My analysis is purely descriptive. By looking at the observed intervals between releases, we can identify the range and central tendency of Blizzard’s recent release pattern. Of course, there will always be variation, but that doesn’t mean there is no underlying structure.
Calling statistics “meaningless” because they don’t predict the future is like calling a speedometer meaningless because it can’t tell you where you’ll crash.

Your arithmetic is holding up better than this thread is giving you credit for. I recomputed every expansion mean from the patch dates and they all reconcile exactly: TBC 667/5 = 133.4, WotLK 754/4 = 188.5, Cata 658/4 = 164.5, MoP 779/5 = 155.8, WoD 656/3 = 218.67, Legion 714/4 = 178.5, BfA 832/4 = 208.0, SL 735/3 = 245.0, DF 637/3 = 212.33, TWW 553/3 = 184.33. The dataset is reconstructible from your outputs, which is more than most forum stat posts manage.
Four corrections though.
1. The 198.33 pooled mean is not BfA through TWW. All 13 BfA-to-TWW intervals average 2757/13 = 212.08. Your 198.33 is exactly 1190/6, which is Dragonflight plus TWW only. Right number, wrong scope label.
2. The TWW median of 183 is not possible. TWW intervals are 190 (11.0 to 11.1), 154 (11.1 to 11.2), 209 (11.2 to Midnight). With three values the median has to be one of them, and it is 190. The pooled median is 189.5, not 186.
3. “Shortest interval since DF was 155” misses your own data. 11.1 to 11.2 was 154 days.
4. Biggest one: the population definition. You are treating expansion launches as patches, counting end-of-expansion droughts (279 to 434 days) as patch intervals, and excluding every .5 and .7 release. That last exclusion is directionally biased, because Blizzard has been shipping real content in the decimals lately (11.2.7 carried Housing early access). Counting only .0/.1/.2/.3 manufactures part of the slowdown you are measuring.
On the 155 to 293 forecast: that is built on n = 3. Distribution-free coverage of a sample range is (n-1)/(n+1), so roughly 50 percent. It is not a conservatively wide interval, it is a coin flip.
The finding actually sitting in your data is dispersion, not level. MoP ran 63, 98, 77, 112, then a 429 day drought. DF ran 155, 189, 293.
Cadence did not get slower so much as it stopped swinging. Coefficient of variation per expansion would show that in one line and would be a far stronger thread than the means are.
By that logic the weather forecast is “meaningless” too, no control group, no p-value, just data. Nobody claimed causation, just subtraction.

Fair catch on the arithmetic. Two things worth clarifying directly:
The pooled numbers were intentionally scoped to DF onward, not BfA onward, that’s not a boundary slip, it’s the actual claim. Blizzard’s cadence changed in Dragonflight (trilogy structure, shorter dev cycles, seasonal live-service pacing), so folding TBC-through-BfA into the same bucket as DF-TWW would just be averaging two different eras of how the game gets shipped. The cut exists to isolate the current model, not to stretch the sample as far back as it’ll go.
And you’re right that I leaned on the mean more than I should have. With n=3–5 per expansion and right-skewed intervals (a single 350+ day drought drags the mean around), the median is the number that actually answers “how long does a patch typically last.” Mean was just a sanity check that totals reconciled, median is the one I’d defend as the finding.
did you mean 193 days? Because someone else commented on this already and it gave me a good chuckle when I first saw it in the OP. “Suggesting that future major patches are likely to be released within approximately 155-293 days.” That’s where the “nearly 100% spread” comment originates from, and why, at least in my case, I said “your statistics.”
Now, it hadn’t yet occurred to me that that may have just been a typo. But understand that when your conclusion basically states “ya it could be anywhere from 5 months to the better part of a year” you start getting people going “thanks, you’ve been a big help…”
Sorry for the confusion and I do feel a little dumb not recognizing it immediately.
You aren’t including the middle patches, which would take dragonflight, tww, and midnight to roughly 56 days each. Like if you go back and actually look at the patches for BFA and Legion and Shadowlands they did fairly closely match what you said, but the current expansion and previous 2 expansions have had dramatically different development methodology.
I intentionally excluded middle patches because they’re fundamentally different from major content patches.
My goal was to analyze the cadence of major releases (e.g. X.1, X.2, X.3), not every content update Blizzard ships.
Middle patches (such as X.1.5 or X.2.7) are primarily designed to deliver QoL improvements, balance adjustments, catch-up systems, small features, and occasionally limited content between major patches. They serve a different purpose in the development cycle.
Including them would answer a different question: “How often does Blizzard release any update?” rather than “How often does Blizzard deliver major content patches?”
That’s why they were excluded. It wasn’t an oversight, it was a “methodological” choice to keep the comparison focused on equivalent milestones across expansions.
I agree there’s no fixed schedule. That doesn’t make the data meaningless.
The purpose wasn’t to claim Blizzard releases patches every X days, but to identify the historical range where major patches have tended to fall.
An estimate isn’t a guarantee, it’s a probability based on historical data. Blizzard may not have a fixed cadence, but they clearly follow a structured development cycle.
Can’t predict anything from this. Look at the swings between some expansions in the median average category.
Include minor patches in the data set and compare the stats against the buggiest expansions in the game. Remember how the Fyrakk Assault was bugged for five weeks following release? Or the bugged out Flame’s Radiance event?
Expansions now are being pushed into a 1.5 year life cycle so the patch cadence means nothing now. They have two major patches. Minor patches now contain quite a bit of content. So considering TWW went from 7 months from launch to .1 and 5 months from .1 to .2… you are looking at waiting from 220 to 170 days or whatever it is per major patch since nothing before TWW matters in this respect.
As a whole, it’s nerdy if you like that stuff to see the patch release frequency but median and means don’t prove much since you are leaving out other factors to show why there was a change in patch release frequency.
