Patch 8.1 and Cross-Faction Roleplay

My RP guild on Emerald Dream has been monitoring the progress in the development of Cross RP because it has so much promise to improve the state of cross-faction RP.

It’s really discouraging to see the functionality be blocked for what appears to be arbitrary reasons that run counter to the spirit of what an MMORPG is supposed to be about.

Please re-enable the functionality of Cross RP!

This add-on made it possible to expand one of my events on a huge scale and made it so rewarding, people made friends, have friendly revelries. And I now get to enjoy more expanded storylines like such with my mag’har orc priest and my friend’s human priest. Not to mention the add-on’s part in 2018’s ToA event by making people be able to communicate with each other on a large scale!

Please allow Cross-RP to be fixed, it has helped so many people in the RP community experience new stories, make new friends, experience Epic moments. If it weren’t for Cross-RP I wouldn’t have enjoyed massive Server events like Tournament of Ages, and other smaller events between other communities.

This is an amazing thing that brings players on both sides together, and allows our love for the game to deepen with each experience we live through our characters.

Even if Blizzard weren’t to reinstate or reallow the add-on’s use, at least an explanation would be nice.

The devs and CMs have repeatedly stated they wish to have better communication with the playerbase. While it’s a smaller issue than most that fill the forums, it’d at least be some sort of step forward in the right direction for them.

I’d like to echo so many others here and say that RP in general, and cross RP in particular, are why I’m still playing. There’s one reason I bought BfA at all, one reason I subscribed during an expansion that - I’ll be honest - I’m pretty hit-or-miss on. That reason is quite simply the Tournament of Ages.

This past August, I had the privilege of attending GenCon 51 with upwards of 60,000 fans of tabletop gaming and roleplaying. It was an amazing experience, one I was honored to be a part of. And then immediately afterwards came the Tournament of Ages, and I saw the immense difference that cross RP made to the tournament grounds. Compared to previous years, it felt so much more alive and engaged - so much like a community. I was floored by the simply amazing job that the organizers did, and the response from the community. Things like this - things that bring us together - that’s what makes WoW what it is.

WoW has been, in the past, greater and more amazing than any other game, certainly in my life, and I’m sure in many of yours. And I firmly believe that it can be again. But what makes it great is not any single tangible piece of mechanics or lore or art. It’s the community. It’s the people who work tirelessly to develop addons, curate groups, design events, stage performances that bring us together. These are what endure over the years.

I don’t mean to suggest by this that RP is somehow more important than other communities; it isn’t. I’m sure all the devout raiders, dungeoneers, and PvPers in the audience would agree that those things would be lessened without the people we play with. Community is of utmost importance in what is, ultimately, an MMORPG.

So if this change is unintentional, or the unfortunate side effect of other changes necessary to the health of the game, I encourage Blizzard to please, please reach out to the community. Tell us, so that we can help.

And if this change is intentional, born out of some misguided belief that bile and spite and a divided community - or even mere silence - will make for a better game, I urge them to reconsider. We are much more than just Horde and Alliance. We are all part of a greater community - all part of the World of Warcraft - and all we ask is that we be able to come together as such.

I fully support the author and the intent behind the CrossRP addon. I only recently started roleplaying on Moon Guard, and it has been… well, at risk of hyperbole… somewhat life-changing. I’ve found new friends, a renewed enjoyment of the game, and a wonderful creative outlet. I hope that either the functionality of CrossRP is restored, or that Blizzard comes up with a solution that will facilitate cross-faction roleplay, only on roleplay servers. By effectively disabling the CrossRP addon, Blizz is alienating a good chunk of its playerbase and will drive many away from in-game roleplay to private servers such as Discord or Slack.

This add-on was such a joy to the RP community, and I was very sad to learn that it no longer works. Hopefully it wasn’t intentional and something can be done.

Full support! :ok_hand:t6::dragon_face:

Part of me thinks this was done unintentionally and will be fixed in the near future. Another part of me things this might of been done on purpose because they already have their own version in the works. But I don’t know.

I really hope that Blizzard reverses this. Last ToA was hands down the best ToA I’ve ever went to and I’ve been to about 4 of them on this character alone. All because I could talk to the Horde. My guild is a neutral and we where trying to build up a Horde side for us for future events but if this isn’t reverse or something then…I guess we can’t?

I hope we get a blue post soon! :blue_heart:

It continuously amazes me the difference in attitude toward roleplayers between Blizz and Square-Enix. Whereas SE is supportive and constantly makes new outfits, emotes, and hairstyles to cater to the primary group that stays active and loyal to the game throughout content droughts, Blizz routinely s***s on them.

it’s no small wonder I meet more and more BfA refugees in Eorzea on a practically daily basis now.

I don’t have a dog in this fight either way honestly, I haven’t really RPed since Cata.

I do like the concept that Pandaren might be the ideal “diplomat race” but not strongly enough to advocate for blocking an addon that people clearly enjoy.

I’m putting in my support here to this thread as well. Tammya is a great content creator and his addons have added functionality to the roleplay community that Blizzard should have added years ago.

The last time I read about the reasoning for avoiding implementing cross-faction chat functionality, it was because of the fear that it’d be used to trash talk in PvP. Maybe this is what immature individuals will use it for, but those who actively used CrossRP utilized it for enriching cross-faction RP that wouldn’t have been accessible otherwise.

I’ve loathed all the years I’ve had to cross-faction RP over first RealID and then Battlenet. I’ve had to share personal information just so my Human can converse with a wayward Sin’dorei on the battlefield. CrossRP solved a lot of the inconveniences with cross-faction RP (something that’s integral to a faction-based war expansion), and as Tammya stated, allowed functionality for individuals to see RP profiles which is a godsend.

Very disappointing seeing Blizzard’s decision here. Either return the API functionality or implement cross-faction functionality on RP realms from your own end.

CrossRP has become an important mod to the rp community.

It’s also worth noting that roleplayers pay subscriptions like everybody else. Given the overall health of the game at this point, targeted actions that drive away any demographic of players is probably not a wise move from a business perspective.

A lot had to have happened behind the scenes to make Battle for Azeroth the awkward mess it is. Undoing all that and making something better would take time and a lot of effort. Leaving people alone to enjoy something that keeps them paying their subs with no effort on Blizzard’s part is financial mana from heaven. Stomping on that same group of people is nuts.

I’ve never used the addon myself, but I know a lot of folks who do and it’s a shame to see it go.

Hopefully Blizzard will be willing to work with you to do something about the addon or, at the very least, offer up an explanation about why they had to make the changes they did that killed it.

I’m very much saddened by the blocking/breaking of the cross rp addon, be it intentional or otherwise. Our group has been involved in numerous cross faction events since its implementation, beginning with the candlelight vigil in honor of those lost at the burning of Teldrasill. It was an emotion and magical evening that brought us into contact with a plethora of amazing people who I would not have had the pleasure of meeting otherwise.

In the past, blizzard has made many an attempt to bring the community together as a whole in a peaceful and interactive way, trying to rekindle that MMO feeling a lot of us were looking for. I feel Blizzard may be shooting themselves in the foot by either passing up an opportunity to fix this oversight, or by intentionally damaging the communities ability to connect with itself.

That said, if it isn’t fully clear, I would very much like to see a supportive comment from a blue on this, with good news that functionality will be returned to our beloved addon for the future of WoW, the future of our community, for the sake of RP, and for the sake of peace between players of the Horde and the Alliance.

Adding my support in for the CrossRP add-on. Roleplaying most of my mains right now in a neutral tauren-centric tribe, we’ve had interactions with those affected by the trials and troubles in Ashenvale. We travelled to Pandaria via boat with a crew of ragged pirate Worgen. This has been a gem for roleplay and to interact with members and friends that joined our community to do so. Please fix whatever may have been overlooked for the add-on to properly work.

Just to add on my own positive experiences with the addon so far: I run a neutral community of peace-seekers. I see folks setting up regular RP in the discord often, and just next week I had planned a community potluck event not just for those in our community, but the server of Wyrmrest Accord at large. A time for all folks to come together and enjoy good company and good food. Not having Cross RP not only damages our ability to do this effectively, it damages the overall RP community by limiting choice.

And to add on (haha) to what everyone has said about Common already- in addition to NPCs being able to communicate across factions, as of Legion the player characters themselves were literally the leaders of our classes. Our class halls had NPCs from both factions. But we suddenly can’t communicate with other players, despite being literally the ultimate champions of our class? Please restore functionality Blizz (and I’d like some more likes too, I’m all out!)!

Even if only 5000 people are using this addon - that’s 80k a month in subs. That’s paying a bunch of somebodies. We aren’t a blip on the radar, Blizz. We’re a community. Come on. Please address this.

As someone who also has only been subbed to WoW because of the Roleplay, I fully support this. There has never been a more immersive addon to our community than this, and it has brought so many people joy and revitalized their interest in the game. Please Blizzard, look into this and restore the functionality. I loved being able to have my Mage attend a story telling event on Saturdays, but without CrossRp that event may not be able to happen again as it used to. Please consider your RP community players. We are a part of your group of patrons too, and deserve the same level of respect that the PvE and PVPers get.

Adding in my support. CrossRP was an absolutely amazing addon, it was insanely useful and honestly breathed some more life into RP in general from what I’ve seen. Especially in an expansion all about tensions rising and war between the factions, being able to speak to those from the other side was absolutely fascinating.

It was even cooler to see how people interacted. Everything was so friendly, both in character and out of character. Differing opinions, differing races, history, all of it colliding in such ways. It was possibly one of the most interesting things to have ever come from RP that I’ve ever gotten the chance to take part in. Nighthaven, the Tournament of Ages, the Draconian Embassy, Conclave of Stars, so many cross faction things wouldn’t have been half as worthwhile without this addon.

Especially since RP is just about the only thing I do anymore, frankly. I am in a raid guild, but honestly it’s just been so uninteresting. RP’s been the only thing really motivating me to bother staying. Heck, just from reading some of this it seems like it’s the reason a lot of us are still playing.

The reasoning behind it being broken seems a little too vague, as well. On the remarkably slim chance that this could have effected any- especially considering all of the blocks set in place to keep it from being abused-… I don’t know. That just seems a little too fishy.

Maybe there could be a way to work with the lovely Tammya to make sure that the risk is nonexistent? It seems unfair to punish so many people who’s entire experience- or guilds, really- relied so heavily on this just because there was an incredibly slim hint that someone might have somehow been using it for something bad.

Either from restoring the addon entirely or working with Tammya somehow to make one implemented for RP in the game itself? Or, some detailed explanation of why it was broken, instead of just ‘there was a rumor.’ Just something to make it seem like we aren’t being left in the dust and the dark here.
