Am I miss remembering or was ammo/arrows only meant to refill in the slot if you have them in a quiver/pouch?
currently I can buy ammo, put it in my normal bags, load it into the paper doll slot and it will refill with auto shoot. I have my quiver equipped full of arrows.
By paper doll slot do you mean “equipping” the ammo next to the ranged weapon on the character tab?
Is your quiver the furthest bag to the left? Don’t remember for sure if that matters, just curious.

Its supposed to use the next stack automatically
Yes, I’m talking about the ammo slot next to the ranged weapon. My quiver is on the far left slot and I’m not using a bow but a gun.
I am leveling my gun weapon skill and bought some cheap ammo and a cheap gun. The ammo reloaded as if I had an ammo pouch equipped but the ammo was in one of my normal bags.
Oh ok. I’ve had extra ammo in a regular bag and it auto used it once my quiver was out of ammo. So from my experiences, yes it does work that way now.
I’m sorry, but not sure if that is how it was in vanilla or not.
I have a distinct memory from long ago about this not being the case, unless my memory is flawed.
It works like this. I fill my bags with arrows. I shoot 201 and the stack in my bag is gone and on my c screen
Yeah, but did it work like that in retail 1.12? I don’t know why I recall it so vividly bout needing a quiver/ammo pouch to auto reload… Is it just a “you need an ammo pouch to gain the % speed increase for gun, quiver for % on bows, and you can have ammo anywhere in your bags”.
o.o
Oh sorry. I dont know
I misunderstood the original question
I also recall warriors needing to reload their ammo/paper doll slot manually after their stack depleted.
I think this may have been an early thing, if not even beta. It’s been a long time, so I don’t trust my memory. I agree that it seems like it used to be a bit different.
There are different variants of ammo that all have the same icon - sharp arrow, razor arrow. When it “refills”, it only does so of the exact same type as it was using.
EDIT: Or for better clarity, when you look on the character screen, it often shows * on the ammo because the number is too large - it’s the sum of all of that type of ammo you have. So a 10-slot pouch with stacks of 200 would be 2000. But if one of those stacks is a different type, it would be 1800 and wouldn’t “refill” to start using the odd-man-out stack of 200.

I can assure you, this isn’t the case in classic, it automatically starts the next stack, and I don’t have an ammo pouch/quiver.
You’re misremembering. All ammo of the same type as you’ve been using (so Sharp Arrows, but not Rough Arrows, for example) go to the paper doll slot. The paper doll slot doesn’t check if you have a quiver or ammo pouch in any way. Quivers and ammo pouches were only added in a patch; for a good chunk of original-Classic, you just had arrows/bullets sitting in regular bags. If you have 13 slots full of Sharp Arrows, 8 of those slots in a quiver and 5 of them in your backpack, as far as the paper doll is concerned, the only relevant information is that you have 2600 Sharp Arrows: authentic.

Perhaps I was confusing ammo with thrown weapons. hmmmm.
yea I remember it being an issue in vanilla, you had to have ammo in the quiver/pouch to autoload, otherwise you manually did it. I believe it was done this way since the only class that had to rely on the quiver/pouch was also the one who did ranged attacks with arrows/bullets, all else would probably reload manually with no issues since they also had more bag space and rarely needed extra ammo slots.
Maybe this will help someone else noobish like myself.
I got the warning to place ammo in the paper doll ammo slot when I ran out of rough arrows. The paper doll ammo slot is the slot where your current arrow type/quantity is shown on the Character tab (shown by pressing “c” key).
Solution was to right click the sharp arrows that I had left in my quiver and they showed in the “paper doll” ammo slot.
Simple solution to an unintuitive error message.

Thank you! I had no idea wtf paper doll meant
Ammo works fine from you normal bags, you just don’t get the attack speed bonus.
It’s always worked that way.
thats normal. only point in using a quiver/pouch is for extra space and the attack speed bonus.
