Seems most of our bis trinkets are DPS ones so I’m assuming that for vault I would want to set my vault to ret?
Though the Fyrakk 1h on a higher level would also benefit me a lot…

I prefer the gear grind in pvp, choose exactly what you want, max gear in no time. But you play Prot Paladin, which is nearly the worst spec in the game for pvp.
You said it right, you need to loot the vault from 2 specs to get BIS and thats inconvienent

Depends on what you’re doing, if you’re raiding then rolling DPS could make sense though tank damage doesn’t really matter until later mythic bosses. Prot needs a shield so that’s priority. After that if you’re doing higher keys you mostly want to run cheat and your 2nd trinket is either rageheart (from raid) or ember of nullification (from M+) and all of that is tank loot. If you are running mid or lower keys you can roll ret after you snag a shield but you honestly won’t even notice the difference in DPS anyway.

I’ll have to keep all of this in mind because I’m currently gearing up my prot Paladin as well.
ret for vault until you get your best trinket. then yolo as prot. pray for 1hander fyrakk drop, you should be able to grab it easily compared to rageheart
define “higher keys” cause dps trinkets are bis even until the 27+ which veery few people go into
Having a Fyrakk’s Rageheart on my alt tank is such a luxury, I need that damn thing on this guy too. On use defensive trinket with a dps trinket is too comfy to pass up (roll prot on your vaults).
The data doesn’t even remotely support your statement. Stonescale has a 97% pick rate at +25 and above, rageheart has a 78% pick rate with ember of nullification at 8%. If rageheart was easier to get it’s pick rate would be as high as stonescale at the top keys but it’s not so ember fills in that slot instead.
There isn’t a single DPS trinket breaking 5% pick rates among the top 1,000 prot pallies, individual players not runs.
Do have a question what trinket is cheat?
Also I went with a crafted shield ATM and I tend to do keys a bit more than raiding on this toon.
So maybe has some bearing?

My trinkets not too bad I still have LFR 1h and Fyrakk tank trinket but seems the DPS one and smolderon trinket are better?
I’ll miss 1h chance for ret or miss DPS trinkets as prot xP
Prophetic Stonescale the cheat death trinket from the mega dungeon.
I forgot about the axe off of Fyrakk so another reason to roll prot for the vault.
Worth noting until you’re vault is from +18s or higher it isn’t really worth worrying about. Below myth track M+ loot the heroic raid is the only reason to even think about it because you want that axe and the Fyrakk trinkets. Below +18s the gear itself is farmable in 17s and higher so no need to even think about it until you start getting myth track M+ vaults.

You stay prot until you have a myth track shield and weapon first and foremost (or heroic fyrakk weapon, which is better then a myth track weapon) Fyrakk trinket , the tanking one, is outstanding as well. Prophetic stone scales (the cheat death trinket people are talking about) is very strong for keys, and in many many cases can save a key entirely especially while your learning and progressing difficulty levels.
The dps trinkets that are good from dungeons that I would consider are rezans gleaming eye from atal dazar and the butcher block from waycrest manor. The eye is very strong single target, and the block is a nice crit buff for both damage and a lot of parry which can really be felt on some dangerous encounters in dungeons.

Opening vault for heroic fyrakk tanking trinket this late into the season. I do not have any 489 versions of the dps dungeon trinkets either.

Yeah as you and Hightin told I went prot spec for vault and got the Fyrakk 1h off the bat! I’m so hyped now hahah!
