Is it viable to tank high lvl dungeons without holy shield?
I wanted to go doen prot but just to blessing of sanctuary, take concecration in holy, and go down ret for more crit, pursuit, and improved ret aura.
Do you think the 5% more crit and imp ret aura can be enough threat to compensate for not having holy shield and 10% more damage with 1H
Kinda sad to be somewhat discouraging someone with a class that can tank to not do so in the face of all the concerns in game of a shortage of players willing to take on that role.
Good advice to answer their questions is great though.
I’m saying Paladins are by far the weakest tank class in Classic, to the point they weren’t even really considered a “real” tank until TBC. So you shouldn’t give up key tank talents on a class that is already baaaarely viable as a tank to begin with.
Like I said, G, people are finding a lack of characters willing or available to take on the role of tank. When somebody wants to do it and asks for advice, if one has the knowledge just share it instead of backhanding the spec/class that might keep others from trying it.
That’s all.
I mean… it’s reality. Paladin is the weakest tank. I didn’t say they couldn’t tank. But you’re not going to see Paladins tanking any HC classic raids for a long time, and it’s going to be more challenging throughout.
I would think it would be more discouraging to think you’re playing a standard tank class and just suck. At least if you know you’ve picked a challenging role you expect the adversity and can prepare accordingly, by for example, not skipping key tank talents.
LOL
OP specifically said running dungeons not raids.
Paladin is more than fine for that.
You don’t need to cosplay a minmaxer here.
Also kudos to the OP for asking for advice but there’s lots of lurkers here. People who might be nervous about taking that role. Just trying to bring more people in to get them hooked on the fun that is being the meat shield, consecrated or not.
Paladins are terrible tanks in classic, and not just because they dont have taunt and their mitigation is bad. They also have mana problems, because unlike druids and warriors they use mana and not rage. Warriors and druids can pull until the healer is oom, paladins can either use all their abilities to do “okay” threat and go oom every few pulls, or they can hold abilities and have weak threat. You should not be skipping holy shield if you’re doing, obviously.
Bears and warriors are both good tanks. Paladins dont get the proper set of tools until tbc.
Paladins are great tanks (even better than Warriors at low levels and in undead dungeons) but their Protection tree is garbage in Classic. The talents are just bad. Even Holy Shield.
31 in Holy for Consecration and Holy Shock (this is your only way to pull from range outside of the undead dungeons) and then 20 in Protection to grab whatever mitigation and utility talents you like.
The consecrate threat isnt what you think it is early, your threat is fragile, and you have to stop every 2 pulls for mana if you’re using judgement and other other abilities. I guess if you think thats good then okay.
