Now that i see level 55+ in green gear clear mc i know i can tank as a paladin. I was even looking at the paladin tier sets with mana per 5 and spell pwr and all that. If i get those peices mixed with tanking neck, rings, trinkets, wep. Shield i should be fine.
It has been done on private servers, so yeah, go for it.
AFAIK, no fight really “requires” a taunt-- it can all be done via threat management. It’s just a lot more difficult. Maybe he has a very supportive guild
In theory it’s not bad but in reality it is bad. I’ve prot tanked in vanilla. All it takes is one person not letting you build a threat buffer and you can do nothing about it.
honestly, for dungeon content its totally fine. the paladin tanks ive run with actually have done a better job than most of the half-assed warrior tanks i get grouped with. come raids things get trickier.
/start fight as Paladin main tank
/other tank taunts
/cast Blessing of Protection on the current tank
/pray that you’re number 2 on the aggro list
/do as much aggro as possible before Blessing of Protection fades
/do this once a fight
I mean… it could work, in a perfect world, if you just did this in a Me > Other > Me > Never me again sort of way.
I’m talking more about damage and mass mob pulls. How does the AoE damage do with things like Blessing of Sanctuary, Holy Shield, Reckoning, and Retribution Aura?
Threat management is relative, and a multi-person job. One tank keeping their threat right on the cusp of losing aggro is just as important as the other tank generating more threat to take aggro.
Threat generation for pally tank is perfectly fine for 5mans. You just have to understand that a paladin is a spell-tank. The vast majority of your threat comes from Holy damage and +STR is next to useless compared to +spellpower. Along with that, using judgement of the crusader is vital for threat generation as it is effectively a single-target +spellpower buff for all your holy damage.
Threat generation is fine. The problem is maintaining threat when you are mana dependent. Fights that take too long can be a problem. How do you hold threat when OOM?
As for taunt, most raid bosses are immune to taunt if I remember correctly, so we’re just talking trash here. But paladins can generate threat, for sure.
OP, go for it. I hope that the meta opens up and the true intention of Vanilla can be realized where people put in effort and try things out and make things work with what they have.
As well, consecration is pretty much mandatory. All the reflective damage in the world pales in comparison to the threat consecration doles out. Downranked consecration to rank 1 in conjunction with JoC is important due to the way consecration interacts with +spellpower and rank 1 consecration gets a huge threat/mana boost when using JoC.
I don’t know much about it, but I’ve heard of a Spelladin meta from private servers that may be viable, but it used SoR instead of SoC. Perhaps this same +spellpower and SoR can be used for threat generation in tanking. Interesting to see how this plays out.
