for whatever reason, the paladin i rolled up started with one hand sword (no sheild). it is retribution paladin. it’s insanely bad. Using the basic tree of talents (which require 2 handed sword that you NEVER get doing the standard quest line) - all i do is hit a regular mob for about 5 minutes before it dies. I am not going to spend thousands of gold on the ah (no clue why prices of crappy items on the ah are thousands). So - am i missing sometihng? is there a talent that actually done damage other than the shield or 2 hand sword i have not been able to find? Thanks in advance!
Level 20 Horde Blood Elf (i went with horde because Paladins should be handsome?)
I guess that’s a one handed spec question AND is this normal (can take a lot of damage but only deal low damage).

What is your loot spec set to?
What level is the character now?
Did you boost it at all or use the gear update option upon log in?

If it was an Allied Race, you should have received a bag of weapons.
If it’s a level 1, you suffer until you can pick a spec and get a 2h.
You should try a level 1 Survival Hunter some time.
Oh, also: no heirloom weapon to use?

I haven’t run the low levels for a paladin in a century. Just keep running the low level quests and you should get a quest reward replacement weapon fairly quickly. Make sure your loot spec is set to retribution.

That’s very weird. Which race did you choose?
Edit: Also, if you answer this, did you go to Exile’s Reach or did you start in the old world starting zone?

By the time (if) this guy even comes back to look at this thread he probably had a replacement two hander already.

I forget exactly where they hang their hat, but there’s a weapon vendor in Silvermoon that ought to sell you a two-hander.
Hmm… Hadn’t created a paladin for a while. Created a new blood elf paladin and it started with a worn mace and worn shield. Only had crusader strike for attack.
That can definitely be a rough start without gold or heirlooms. Should get some replacement gear through the starting quests though.
Huh, yeah. When I create a new Paladin they have a one hander and shield. I don’t remember that being the case before, but I also have heirlooms, so I might have just never paid attention.
Vendor weapons or quest till you get one.
One of the first quests you do is a weapon choice

So, it looks like level 1 characters start with a one hander and a shield. That’s fine, because you don’t have a spec at that time and should be able to get a two hander well before level 10, regardless of which starting experience you begin with.
By level 20, you should have had plenty of opportunities to get a two-handed weapon, unless you’re doing something like running dungeons to speed level. At that point, it’s down to RNG and could easily have been unlucky for you. Still, you’d have needed to level up another way before queueing for dungeons, so it seems strange that you’ve not been able to obtain a two-handed weapon.

Buy a blue one off AH for like 300g ?
I’d say go buy an heirloom 2 hander, so they never have to worry about this again, heh.
With the Darkmoon Faire opening up on Sunday, you can just go and do the Silas Secret Stash for 100 Darkmoon Faire Tickets and buy one for 70 tickets. Easy peasy.
Aren’t heirlooms effectively dead unless you pay tens of thousands of gold to upgrade them so they scale all the way to L70? If you just get basic heirlooms they become useless well before L70 because they stop scaling without upgrades.
I would say a blue off the AH for like 300g is a better way to go… even questing greens are adequate for just leveling to 70.
If you want to upgrade and use them above level 29, yeah, it’ll cost a lot of gold (or other resources depending on where you get your upgrades from). But if you can just get a weapon from a quick Darkmoon Faire quest that will be useful on any new character up until level 30, so you never have to worry about missing a two hander again, it’s not a horrible option.
Step One: Buy Heirlooms
Step Two: Equip Heirlooms
Step Three: Enjoy outdated game
