Should they be rolling on stuff with +int on it when there are clothies in the group?
If they are healing I don’t see why not if it’s armor just because there is very little mail/plate with +int on it until later levels. Then again I’m a hunter and if I roll on anything I get called a ninja.
Roll on anything that will help you heal better.
A lot of holy paladin bis gear at 60 is a mixture of plate, cloth, and leather, so…have at it. I don’t see why not.
Start off with a clear statement like
“Is it okay if I roll need on cloth gear?” or
“I’m just here for [item]”
Or make your own group without clothies
If I joined a group with a warlock and priest, I assume we’re all rolling over the same loot. I rarely make that assumption with druids/shamen. But being upfront gives each player a chance to decided if they agree or not before getting an hour deep into a dungeon run.
As a former paladin main:
Short answer: yes, but…
Long answer: But a nice paladin will not try to scoop up ALL the +int gear if clothies are in the group. I always rolled on plate (mail below 40), necks/rings/trinkets and any +int armor no one in the group can use. So, leather if there were no +int leather users in the group, etc.
I tried to leave cloth armor for the cloth wearers, since everyone in the group would like to get an upgrade if possible.
Yes, it is perfectly fine. People who don’t want druids/paladins/shamans taking cloth gear should not invite them to heal groups and only invite priests.
Considering most paladins level as ret, no. They should not take int gear unless it specifically says bonus healing and they are infact the healer in the group.
yes they should
Since Paladins can wear mail and leather, and later plate, as well as cloth, they are choosing from a larger pool of gear. This is clearly an “unfair” advantage over more gear restricted classes.
However nuances muddy the waters.
Because there are more classes in the game that benefit from cloth with intellect than there are classes that benefit from plate/mail with intellect, there is significantly more cloth with intellect gear than plate with intellect.
Obviously there are more nuances which I have failed to intuit.
Does anyone really find it worth their time to work out the exact situation which would be equally fair to all parties in all situations? Unlikely.
Conclusion. Work it out with your group.
Just assume the healer is going to roll on int gear. Last I checked they use mana to heal.
Yes.
Intellect increases their mana pool, and lower level gear does not have +Healing on it, so Intellect is their best stat.
Let everyone know beforehand, that you will be rolling on cloth since you are a healer. A lot of people don’t seem to grasp that a lot of mail drops at low levels don’t have int. Even at high levels they don’t
General consensus is that if it’s an upgrade, you can roll on it.
Best advice is to just let everyone know at the beginning of the run so they can back out if they have an issue with it.
In practicality, as a Paladin, I try to only roll on the armor class that our group is lacking.
For example, if my group is a buncha clothes, I’ll take the leather and mail.
That’s pretty common. As a paladin, I never liked wearing what I called “paper plate.”
It depends.
Were rules decided on at the beginning of the run? Ideally, they should be if you sense a potential conflict with other people who need to feed a mana pool. If rules are agreed on then stick to the rules.
No rules in place and it’s time to roll?
If it’s a weapon, trinket, cloak, ring, or neck and it’s an upgrade for me I will roll need no questions asked.
If it’s leather or mail and nobody else who wears leather or mail has a mana pool and I actually intend to wear it then I will roll need. If I don’t intend to wear it then I greed roll for money or enchanting mats from the thing.
If it’s cloth and like 4 other people want it and it’s an upgrade for me? I will probably still only roll greed or just straight up pass. Cause most of the time I’m too stuck up to wear cloth anyway and I would rather go buy some crafted leather or mail +int gear that at least has a bit of armor to it. Now for someone else who isn’t stuck up about wearing cloth armor as a paladin? Functionally there is nothing at that point stopping you from rolling need on like, a cloth robe, but do it knowing that there’s a near certainty that you will draw ire from the clothies if you win. Decide beforehand whether or not that bothers you enough to change how you roll.
Whether or not it is appropriate for them to get mad is irrelevant because most likely, especially if there is more than one clothie in group, someone is going to get mad about it if you win. You just need to be prepared for that possibility.
