This is a legitimate attempt to give constructive feedback to the wow devs on the Paladin class. I have posted questions about your wow experience, the paladin class in general and each wow spec.

My Answers:

  1. How long have you been playing the Class?

Since 2005, about patch 1.2 or 1.3.

  1. How many Paladins do you play? Which is your favorite paladin race? Which paladin do you like best? Why?

For progression, human is the best. For gameplay, Lightforged Draenei is the best. I have 3 paladins, 1 human female, 1 human male and lightforged dranei female. My female human (holy) paladin was my main and most played. She is currently retired.

Since Molten core. All of them. Mostly holy. Right now, prot.

  1. Have you PvPed as a Paladin? What formats/venues? Highest rank or rating? What is your favorite PvP spec?

Since wow classic rated(individual ratings) PvP. 50,000 hks before patch 1.9. 3rd ranked paladin on Maelstrom. Commander. Then the honor farming, character selling etc. started.

  1. Which version of the Paladin class (which expansion or patch version) do or did you like playing best? Why? What spec did you play?

Up to the last patch before the end of Lich King. Strongest, most fun to play, most versatile. Prot and ret. I like playing support, being able to support my group, fulfill my role and kick some a**. I loved the Paladin support abilities in Lich King. Holy, ret and prot were all fun and interesting.

  1. What is your definition of the current Paladin as a class (holy warrior, cleric etc.)?

Weak holy warrior.

  1. What is your opinion of each Paladin spec in BFA?
  • Holy - functional, boring healer. Holy works but it is not fun to play. Holy healing feels slow, clunky and awkward. Without needed melee tools, holy melee healing mastery is useless. Holy is weak in PvP in BFA. Holy’s one-dimensional direct healing is easy to counter. Removing the holy artifact weapon gutted the spec.
  • Retribution - functional, boring dps. Decent single target dps. Clunky, boring rotation. Weak AE damage. Weak mobility in pvp. Poor survivability in pvp. Ret is easy to counter and lock down in PvP.
  • Protection - functional, effective boring tank. Generic mana tank with a holy bolt on. Prot is probably the best paladin spec in BFA.

The BFA paladin is uninspired and uninspiring. Playing a Paladin in BFA can literally put you to sleep or make you quit in frustration, especially in PvP. The BFA paladin has weak utility in pvp and pve.

No, my Draenei shaman is my main. The shaman feels powerful and versatile. I like all the specs. The shaman has more utility in pvp and pve. Purge, Wind Shear and Totems etc. are awesome. The shaman is just more fun to play.

  1. What are your plans for your Paladin for the futured? Are you a Paladin for life? Are you done with the paladin class?

I don’t know yet what the future of my Paladin(s) is. That depends on Blizzard. I could be considered a paladin for life.

  1. Do you believe Blizzard understands the WoW Paladin class and wow paladin players?

No, I do not believe that the wow devs either understand the paladin class or those who play it. They treat the Paladin paladin players like second class citizens in wow, almost never making the paladin competitive with other classes. The WoW devs treat the paladin class like their personal punching bag, arbitrarily nerfing and removing key abilities or even handing key paladin abilities to other classes, removing the distinct identity of the Paladin. The wow devs have never solicited feedback from wow paladin players (until now?).

  1. Do you believe the WoW devs have a positive vision for the paladin class? If yes or no, what do you believe their vision is?

I believe the wow devs have an anti-vision for the Paladin class. They know what they don’t want the paladin to be but they don’t seem to have any idea what they want it to be or become.

  1. Is there hope for the paladin class in wow?

A Paladin must always have hope. What point is there in being a Paladin with no hope?

  1. What suggestions do you have for the WoW devs for the Paladin class?

Never got much into raiding until Dragon Soul, at which I was a Protection Paladin, then swapping to Holy Mainspec from MoP to now. Holy was my favorite raid spec when we had Daybreak and Holy Radiance.

  1. Have you PvPed as a Paladin? What formats/venues? Highest rank or rating? What is your favorite PvP spec?

I PvPed before I started raiding, which was mainly Ret, though the PvP scene has been fairly off-putting lately so I have no opinions.

Class fantasy was definitely WotLK, but for gameplay I’d say Cata/MoP was where Paladins were thier funnest, until they started cutting away our abilities.

Ret is boring and terrible in PvE, Holy is boring and soon to be the worst healer when Resto shaman gets buffed, and Prot is pretty average so far

My Paladin is my main and has been ever since I ran lfd as Prot whilst leveling, truly hooked me.

As much as I’d like to move on and play another class as my main, I just can’t. I’ve spent way too much time on it, and have far too many great memories to just put it aside.

They know the Paladin Class and Playbase as much as the Diablo team knows their playbase (0)

I get what they’re doing with the visual update, but seriously, they need a gameplay update far more than just some brighter lights.

Thank you so much for your post. Though we disagree on some issues concerning the paladin class in wow, it is important that all opinions be heard.

I can only bump this thread once. Keep those posts coming!!

It is interesting to note that this is subjective feedback. The key issues for the paladin class cannot be quantified in a database or a spreadsheet.

Sunwalker your race is a disgrace to our holy order Knight of the silver hand. Stupid outrageous lore that allowed your kind to play paladins has been the biggest insult to our (human) class. Taurens do not possess the intellect or light that composes a true paladin. I love killing cow pallies and blood knights in pvp hahaha!

Just this Belf. Honestly Human Paladins look very interesting a have a very good backstory but I am not a fan of playing the same class different race

  • Prot for TBC and WotLK and I loved it
  • Ret since I came back. Just have not bothered since ret still seem fresh to me after such a long break. I would go prot but Heroics are pointless for me right now and raids are looking for far more geared players then me so Catch 22

Never in Arenas since those are dominated by very coordinated teams. In Battlegrounds it is extremely fun. Back in WotLK used hybrid builds to be almost impossible to kill and dealt heavy damage. New format locks into one build with no choice to pick up survivability in another tree so been play Ret.

Ret: Extremely limited in choices for building holy power compared to other classes that have more attacks then can even fit on a bar
Prot: Looks like it is in a good space
Holy: Does not seem to be preferred for anything in high end Mythic. Another example of gear holding them back and being lock into one spec for an expansion

  • This character see above. No other class I plays as an alt is remotely as fun compared to Paladin

    Never have given up on Paladin even when DK’s effectively replaced us for everything for almost 8 months straight in Wrath

  • Do you believe Blizzard understands the WoW Paladin class and wow paladin players?
    No. Zero chance they know what is going on or just how limited we are in multiple scenarios. Play a Alt demon hunter and you quickly realize how we have been nerfed into oblivion. Look at raider dot IO and Ret Paladin is nowhere to be found in the top 100 ranks for DPS. Havoc DH is the goto damage DPS

WoW devs have convinced themselves or issue was too many options so they stripped the class down to almost nothing.

    Yes more ways to build up holy power and not pray for a proc to stay relevant.

In honor the trip down memory lane, I post this as my Vanilla lvl 60 paladin complete with Lightforge/Knight-Captain armor and The Unstoppable Force!

How long have you been playing the Class?

a.) Since patch 1.3 or 1.4 and then on and off throughout the expansions.

a.) Two. Played a Human Paladin until TBC and then made a Blood Elf Paladin.

c.) Blood Elf paladin because I think blood elves are more interesting than Humans and I wanted to play a Horde character.

b.) Very good at tank healing. Great with mana management, especially if you stacked MP5 and spirit gear and had a shadow priest in the group (Although they nerfed that eventually). Armor mattered a bit more back then so they also had the advantage of taking a few more hits than other healers if you had aggro.
c.) Holy

What is your definition of the current Paladin as a class (holy warrior, cleric etc.)?

a.) Holy Warrior

What is your opinion of each Paladin spec in BFA?

a.) Protection – Decent fun with Captain America’s shield. Don’t play too much Prot though.
b.) Holy – Middle of the road healer with some decent utility. Design philosophy is a bit confusing. I’m not sure if the devs intend paladins to be a melee/dps healer or a traditional healing. The mastery frustrates me at times during boss fights with spread mechanics. Rule of law seems like a band aid workaround to get past this disadvantage and doesn’t really feel good.
c.) Ret – The rotation bores me to tears in PvE. I tried to main Ret spec in the beginning of BFA but just couldn’t bear it any longer.

a.) Paladin
b.) Yes
c.) Because I’ve always loved Paladins in general in any fantasy setting. Being a plate wearing healer while being specialized to handle undead.

a.) I will play a Paladin until I die.

a.) I believe so, but who knows what goes on in the inside.

a.) Hard to ascertain as communication between the class dev team and the community is extremely rare.

Is there hope for the paladin class in wow?

a.) Oh yeah, there’s always hope. I don’t think Paladins aren’t in terrible shape at the moment, they just needs some tweak and adjustments and in my opinion a more focused design philosophy when it comes to their role in PvE content.

Since 7days after vanilla came out, raided right up to start/mid of cata, returned in pandaria but didn’t like it after hitting 90

I have the one human Paladin, it’s my fav reason being Uther was a human and racials back in vanilla were good.

I raided vanilla upto naxx as holy spec. When BC came out I raided all content right up to mid cata as ret spec

Love pvping as ret highest rating is wouldn’t have a clue, I do have 106k lifetime kills and the justicar title. My favourite spec was reckoning in vanilla.

I loved raiding wotlk at ret and the black temple those were great times.

Just this one. I don’t really have a favorite because I’ve never really taken interest in leveling alts.

Unfortunately, I haven’t done any hardcore raiding since Cataclysm. I was holy there.

PvP simply doesn’t interest me.

Cataclysm was my favorite, largely because of what Blizzard hadn’t yet done. They hadn’t yet invented the concept of spec-specific abilities, so they had only three ways to get a spell on your spellbar: (1) make it a class ability that all three specs can get, (2) make it a talent, or (3) make it a perk you get at level 10 for choosing a spec. With those limited options, Blizzard absolutely had to give me a lot of fun abilities like Inquisition, Consecration, Holy Wrath, Rebuke, and Hammer of Wrath. Holy Power was a fun addition at the time, and I had things to spend it on both for damage and for healing. Blizzard was homogenizing healing, which forced them to give Holy paladins four (FOUR!) new heals in Cataclysm after two expansions of dragging their feet on giving us new healing buttons. Finally, Exorcism lost its cooldown and became a spammable ranged damage tool…I really miss having a spammable ranged damage tool.

We’re meant to be versatile and buildable toward different ends. Healing, melee DPS, tanking, all of them should be on the table, though not necessarily all of them on the same character at the same time. Mage-in-plate would be nice if it were balanceable.

I’ve only got experience with Holy, and the spec feels gutted after Legion. I think Blizzard needs to add back a passive or two (like making Divine Purpose a class passive), add the Beacon of the Lightbringer talent back to make the spec more flexible again, and bring back Denounce—with or without the debuff, idc.

My main is this Holy paladin.

If I stay with WoW at all (not clear I will), I’ll stay with this toon. Been with it more than a decade.

I believe Blizzard’s devs have something of a disconnect with players in general, not just about class design, but about the whole experience of the game. Watch BellularGaming to see what I mean; I generally agree with his assessments.

Kind of. I’m mostly okay with healing, which is our main focus, but the devs should’ve put a little more thought into our damage system and added Denounce back—maybe with some gimmicks like (for instance) rebalancing half of Denounce’s damage into a stacking buff like Seal of Righteousness, where one autoattack consumes one stack to deal extra Holy damage. We need something to fill in the gaps and deal damage at range with no cooldown; I think every spec in the game should have at least one ranged ability with no cooldown.

  1. Is there hope for the paladin class in wow?

Cataclysm and WotLK taught me that there’s always hope; the devs can and have changed their minds about things, and they’ve discarded visions and concepts that simply don’t work. Getting Consecration back in Legion was another thing that taught me that there’s hope; having no AoE damage tools was a drag against packs of low-HP mobs. Just ask Discipline priests who played in Legion!

I had 2, now only one. I play lightforged but I would really like Night Elf paladin!

I have raided since BC, mainly prot, and Ret

I am not a big PVPer, I have done some but not a lot

  2. Prot, in the beginning of MOP, with Eternal flame, Sacred shield and holy insight aura. The self-healing with haste to increase it. Feeling like a tank who could hold his own and heal himself pro-actively.

Eternal Flame: “Consumes up to 3 Holy Power to heal an ally for up to (330% of Spell power) and an additional (10% of spell power) every 2 sec for up to 30 sec. Healing over time increased by 50% when cast on self.”

Light Of the protector: “Calls down the Light to heal you for [ 280% of Spell Power ], increased by up to 200% based on your missing health”.

– I feel this is so much better than the current light of the protector, that heals based on missing health, it’s like only effective when you are about to die and then you have to wait 14 seconds to get another heal… I think a HOT like this would be more beneficial, and something to keep running. A holy warrior, should be able to heal more effectively while tanking, otherwise we are no different than a warrior who can talent into a heal that while may not be viable to them is probably more viable than our light of the protector… There’s has a longer cd but heals a 20% of their max HP, while we have to wait until were almost dead to than heal? Why not have the HOT running or choosing between the HOT or SOTR etc… And being able to be more pro-active in our damage mitigation and self-healing rather than re-active. Plus if you wait till your health is low to than heal because your heal is more effective at low health, you risk getting hit by something and dying and then what was the point…

Very weak Holy warrior. Just a shiny Warrior. The lore of being a protector of the light, I feel is lost, what is the difference between a normal warrior and a paladin, I would say the reliance on the light to heal and to protect. In Mop you had so many more options of abilities that allowed the protection paladin to heal while mitigating damage, which fed into the lore and the feel of a Holy warrior who was protecting people and healing their wounds… Just my two cents. Bring back Eternal Flame and Sacred Shield, or Eternal flame and light of the protector together, a reactive heal and a proactive heal. Maybe that would make us too OP, I do not know… but Right now, I feel like a more glowy version of the warrior with less mobility.

Pretty boring, low to no mobility. Once your charger is on cd… strong in terms of mitigation kind of, but overall lack luster.

My main is a protection Paladin, I like the idea of being a protector of the light, holding back enemies and healing my allies.

I am pretty sure I am a paladin for life, I will be playing it in Shadowlands, I just wish it could be a NELF and had a bit more utility in the healing department as protection.

I do not think Blizzard understands their player base at all! I think they are too far removed and really do not know what people want out of their game. So I would say no, I think in their attempts to maybe balance PVP or something they have nerfed and changed other classes to a point of making them boring and lack luster.

Definitely not. I do not think they have anything positive in store for it. There are some things that people have been asking on wowhead and icy viens and forums to see changed things that will make the class smoother to play and more enjoyable, and they have not. It is like the current president of Blizzard said years ago “You think you know what you want, but you dont”. They think they know what we want, but really they have no idea. They are blind and one day it could be their downfall.

Sure, it would require them actually listening to the player base for that class. For all classes, look at what players want out of their class and go from there. Think about like the way the talent system is now, it is set up in such a way that there are like default choices, there is no real competition or choice. There is some but nothing that is meaty and makes your brain hurt because all three options are so viable and so good you want to do all 3. Some things should be just baseline. Give all specs Blessing of Kings (the shield) and Blessing of wisdom. Give ret and Prot another heal option. Bring back the glory days for Paladins! Invest in the class and bring forth the Holy Warrior it was meant to be! And bring NIGHT ELFS INTO THE FOLD! We have Troll Paladins now… Come on!!! Its about time!

Yea its a necro thread but not a bad idea for community feedback outside of the beta. But these aren’t the greatest set of questions I would think for devs to get feedback on design direction.

I wish they would listen, and take these things into account, and maybe for once listen to the player base. Even a blue post acknowledging that they have seen and heard feedback from people…

Since WotLK.

I have MANY Paladin alts, but only have the time to play one of them as my main.

Blood Elf is my favorite race due to looking good in plate transmog (slim, not insanely tall, etc).

Holy is my favorite spec. I enjoy being able to make my own decisions on how to handle any given situation, and not being forced into a rotation.

I clear raids on heroic but I don’t bother with mythic.

I raid as Holy which is also my preferred spec.

I do 2’s and 3’s as Holy at 1900 CR. Sometimes do random BGs with friends.

Difficult to say - our class changes so much at the start of every expansion. I know that I enjoyed playing Holy in both Legion and BFA, and I believe that Holy has improved over time; but I fear that the return of Holy Power (and being forced into melee) might be a step in the wrong direction.

Using Wake of Ashes as Ret is also extremely satisfying - probably my favorite ability outside of Avenging Wrath.

Can’t really say as a “class”.

In my mind, Ret is a holy warrior, and Holy is a cleric.

I’ve never been a fan of Ret outside of dungeons and questing. There are much better melee classes to choose from. Their mobility is lacking and are too easy to shut down in PvP.

Holy is in a great place at the moment. Those who want to heal in melee can do so, likewise for those who want to heal at range. There are lots of meaningful choices to be made with Sacrifice, Avenging Wrath, Aura Mastery, etc. Every button feels satisfying to push.

Holy Paladin is my main spec, but I greatly enjoy Fire Mage, Mistweaver Monk, Havoc DH, and Unholy DK. I detest Warlock and Shaman.

If Holy becomes a melee healer then I’ll give it up. I’d rather off-heal as Ret.

Honestly, probably not. But because Paladin is the most-played class, I can see how easy it would be for them to get pulled in multiple directions by the players that complain the loudest.

No, I don’t. They’re bringing back every ability that people were glad to see gone. I’m given the impression that Blizzard are trying to appease the classic players despite them not wanting to play retail anyway.

I have a Horde and Ally Paladin, both Holy. I like both humans and Lightforged for their aesthetics.

I have done Ret but mostly always been holy. I have raided every expac, hopefully will go 12/12m in the next week or two.

I enjoyed Early Cata Holy paladin. Felt versatile and effective.

I have always seen Ret and Prot and holy warriors and Holy more as a plate Cleric. Not sure why Blizz has such a hard on for the idea of a melee bound healer.

Holy works only because of max corruption and essences. Fundamentally the class has lots of issues.

Yes my Paladin is my main, Holy is my fave.

Paladin for life, very concerned with SL holy. If Holy gets so bad that I can’t play it, I would likely step away from wow rather than reroll.

Hell no, they won’t even communicate with us or acknowledge we exist.

Their vision seams like is all over the place, I don’t think they have any good ideas and are just trying to bandage paladin enough to ship out SL.

Maybe, but considering the whole zero communication thing. I’m pessimistic towards our future.
