Paladin Abilities wrongfully on the GCD

There are a few paladins abilities still on the GCD that do not seem as if they should be.

These are:

  • Divine Steed
  • Shield of Vengeance
  • Eye for an Eye
  • Divine Shield

I look at the other specs within the game and just wonder why paladin is so different?

Is it a bug, or intentional?

Now, I can understand Divine Shield not being on the GCD because the strength of the ability, but I do not understand why the other 3 abilities are on GCD still?

Defensive abilities that reflect damage, such as Touch of Karma, are not on the GCD, so I don’t believe that could be it either??

Can anyone explain why Paladins are singled out in such a manner?

I rolled a Windwalker Monk for 9.2 after skipping 9.1 and 9.1.5 and playing a ret at the start of the expansion.

Each time I go back to play my Ret I see the glaring differences between both hybrid class and how much better Windwalker is at doing everything the Ret tries to do.

Offensive CD
Monk baseline has 3* Invoke Xuen and 2 charges of SEF

Ret has 1 + a talented CD which happens to share cost with your hard-hitting ability (why?).
In my mind Seraphim should be just like Storm, earth and fire. Off GCD and no HP cost.

Defensive CD
Monk has 2 baseline and a 3rd talented that is either flat all round damage reduc or 20% all damage red on a CD or Magic resist and dispel self

Ret has 2
Shield of vengeance and Divine shield
Touch of Karma is just a better and stronger SoV.
The divine shield is obviously good but feels way less flexible due to his long CD

Mobility
LOL
The worst is that they almost gave Ret a real cool jumping ability. Arator, the follower from legion, was actually using it if you got him as a companion but they decided to scrap that. Instead they gave us a horse…
And now they’re TRYING to make it better by prolonging it’s effect by almost double the time. We don’t need it to last longer, we need at the very least a second charge without compromising getting CDR on our defensive ability.

Meanwhile the Monk has 2 roll, flying serpent kick and tiger lust (again a better version of Blessing of Freedom for all intent and purposes)

Its intentional. Its part of their compulsion to keep ret in the dumpster.

Yeah, that’s honestly been my biggest issue now that I’ve started to play more alts. These little differences in the class design-- that really only effect paladins make the game feel horrible.

I can log onto my Rogue, Dk or Warrior, and I can react instantly in PvP situations with using abilities like Sprint, Heroic Leap, Evasion, Cloak of Shadows, Anti Magic Shell, Berserker Rage, etc… and it feels so smooth.

Logging onto my paladin, it feels sluggish and frustrating when I cannot get Divine Steed off quick enough to maneuver my character.

Is no one playing paladin? Or what’s going on with the class. Why is every melee designed a certain way but paladins? What makes Paladins so unique? I just don’t get it.

I did the same because I didn’t like how they changed ret in 9.0

Monk is tons of fun. More CDR and less random procs lottery.

The ones purely playing ret are either die hard fans of the class or people that are not paying attention to this kinda thing or the meta for that matter.

The others are playing prot and holy which are objectively in a pretty good place for what their role requires to do.

I think internally they never really nailed the identity of the classe. Or they identified SOME good thing but never expanded them.
The auras are a good example, love them or hate them, IMO they are part of the class history going back to W3. But they seemed to have brought them back as an afterthought.
There is essentially only 1 useful aura (Devo). Concentration is only good in PVP, retribution is only good if you’re failing as a group (which used to be a passive) and the last one is a world traveling aura.

Classic had type of damage so the aura were more diverse but when they brought it back they didn’t bother to create new interesting one to offset the lost of the resistance auras.
They just brought back the only one that were still kinda relevant and called it a day.

At this point they would be better served by making aura spec specific and make aura mastery staple across the spec.
Like Devo for protection, a Divine aura for holy that would increase healing received for example and a reworked retribution aura that would give a flat damage increase. I’m not being overly original but even the monk has better aura effect than the paladin AKA increase group speed AND increase physical damage on targets.

Fantasy wise, I never understood how Paladin weren’t the one who got battle rez, it’s pretty much their ultimate ability in W3.
Instead they gave it to druid, an already very flexible class, to warlock that already have a ton of utility, and to death knight that are the antithesis of the paladin.

They did in WoD.

WoD Ret was a beauty. Legion massacred us for the basic plain knight for no reason to copy Diablo cause they have a Diablo dev…

Preach dude, never did it feel better than in wod,

Also add blessing of freedon to the list of things that should be off the GCD, but honestly jusrt having steed off would do wonders, cause having to movee out quickly out of an ability and having to crawl your way out of it while wiaitng the few miliseconds it takes for the GCD to end makes it feel terrible, if im fast enough to click it to get out of something i should be able to.

Totally agreed. Bubble (Divine Shield) should be off GCD. It was this way in the old days, making it a much more reliable spell.

Well that’s really my biggest gripe with these abilities being on the GCD.

The game is so fast pace that being able to instantly react on my other characters feels so good. I can make meaningful plays within an instant, heroic leap kicking, or using evasion or Die by the Sword.

It just feels so awful playing one of those classes and coming over to a Paladin. =/

WoD is the worst expansion this game has ever had, and if you think WoD Ret was better than Legion you’re nuts. WoD was leftover MoP talents with the only good addition being Final Verdict. Legions only problem was gimping our movement and changing our mastery.

It definitely feels bad having everything on the gcd. Also a double whammy at least in PvP where you stack mastery and have little haste so your gcd’s are excruciatingly slow as well. What I will say though is it does act as a differentiator between bad and good rets where holding your global in anticipation of using a defensive becomes extremely important in pvp.

Not talking about the expansion itself, but if you think ret wasnt aamzing during WoD you straight up didnt play it, dont jsut spew the popular opinions you hear on reddit.

It was just running on MoPs fumes with a couple added talents, Legion was significantly better even if the mastery was weird and cavalier was introduced.

Those reason made it not better in my eyes, also they changed a lot more than that

Wod might has had the worst content of any expansion. In my mind it will always better one of the best for Ret.

I don’t care if there’s nothing to do, I pvp. WoD Ret was beautifully done and so much fun to play.
We had the same things as mop, but better stuff aswell. Like Final Verdict with free divine storm proc that did almost as much damage as templar’s verdict.

Then we had Empowered Seals which was amazing to play into wizards cleave, offered so much selfhealing, mobility, power, honestly, whatever you wanted it to be.

Sure the numbers were low after S1. But god damn it was the best version of Ret to play.
You’re calling it left over MoP talents, I’m calling it taking what was already good, and making it even better. We could dispel magic with sac aswell.

Legion massacred the flavor of Ret forever by literally stripping everything Ret was to be a boring plain basic knight.

We were a F1 racing car, now we’re a handicapped chair.

Also yes.
