Paid entertainment should never be boring

I really think bliz has lost sight of the primary design goal

i.e. Making fun content that players love paying for and repeating

Nowadays it feels more like bliz is designing to find our maximum tolerance levels for boredom and minimum reward levels to keep us playing

Every player has different personal standards of course, but damn does this xpac feel like ‘fun’ hasn’t been a big part of the design process

There are many paid entertainment avenues that I find dreadfully boring. Fun is subjective and personal.

What would make it fun for you?

You have to pay to watch Curling events.

I can think of one activity on the internet I do daily that is fun and very repeatable also being free. Blizzard should figure out how to get that same experience in WoW!

I used to have tons of fun driving towards certain rewards on vendors. Really made repetition more fun as I made exact and certain progress to those things.

RNG completely demotivates me from repetition. I loathe the feeling of wasted time. Another ‘pull’ on the slot machine doesn’t feel like I got closer to my goal.

PvP used to be a huge thing for me, rotating the BIS gear acquisition between alts. Entirely gone now and the honor grind is largely an empty number with miniscule rewards. Feels like wasting time in pvp if you are driving for any reward.

Same with LFR, used to be tier sets with cool bonuses and appearances that I could drive towards on relatively small loot lists. Felt reasonable and time wasn’t being wasted.

I guess as I write this, my core anti-fun mechanic is feeling like I’m doing something for no or negligible benefit. Just wasting my time. The BfA reward system is just stretched to thin with too much RNG for me. Lots of ‘wasted time’ built in with duplicates and trash and negligible amounts of currencies or AP.

Flying also made the world a TON more fun to travel. Cut away lots of travel friction that demotivates me from mythics and many other world activities.

My peak enjoyment was MoP systems. If that helps understand the vast difference between legion/bfa and MoP.

moreover WHY can’t the current devs already anticipate this kind of blowback and feelings from the players?

the initial devs ALWAYS had these kinds of aggressive grindy systems as an option and chose to avoid them. Unavoidably the conclusion is that they avoided them because they were less fun.

why make things less fun now?

Really hate to say it, but I agree. What’s even sadder is how often you hear people joke around about the crazy changes blizz makes by saying, “FUN DETECTED MUST CHANGE”.

You are right … “Paid Entertainment Should Never Be Boring.” There are tens of thousands of different types of “entertainment,” and not all of them appeal to everyone. When a boring entertainment is discovered, know what the solution is?

Don’t pay. Keep looking for entertainment that ISN’T boring to you and pay for that venue.

I like three different types of music; but, there are some performers in each of those styles that I absolutely can’t stand either because the music itself, or the lyrics, or the singer’s ability, is boring (or worse). I don’t go to their performances, I don’t buy their CDs, I don’t listen to them online. I find a performer that isn’t boring, that I like the music and lyrics and singing ability. There was one group several years ago that I enjoyed; then they went off the deep end (as far as entertaining me is concerned) and I quit buying their albums and quit going to their concerts.

Choices. We all have choices. Pay, or don’t pay. Problem solved.

I find baseball games boring, and that’s paid entertainment. Broke your argument.

The number one thing people find fun is being overpowered. No wonder there’s a correlation.

Most things you pay for are complete crap. The food, your living space, your commodities…theyre all just crap.

Bumblebee disagrees with you!

Haha. Yea because youve never bought a game for $60, played it for 10m. Realized it was garbage and then took it back to not get a refund or get worked by Gamestop and get almost nothing for it. It happens all of the time. This game is still good. Just stop coming to forums, its rotting your brain and clouding your judgement.

For me, blizzard acting upon feedback provided during beta would be a good start.

Paid entertainment should never feel like I’m used as a marketing toy to attract more whales. It should never feel like I’m in my second job as soon as I get home and want to relax. It should never feel like that and yet… it does.

I followed beta, and the player base did mostly a very poor job providing feedback. It often was not specific or was emotional ranting. It was great, when folks calmly presenting ideas.
