P2 Paladin Runes Datamine -spoiler-

So im noticing a lot of cool new runes im excited to see.

However something stands out in particular: there is a Hammer of Wrath rune. Do we not get that spell til 41? Or did they change what level we get abilities. Also noticed runes affecting Holy Wrath as well.

Im seeing a lot os shockadin runes.
Kinda meh to me.

Noticed that as well, which sad im not seeing smite runes for priests.

But of course its PTR and things can change. Which again i gotta ask bout that HoW/HW

Most of the datamined information is either red herrings or for later phases.

The only runes you should consider even close to likely legitimate are the ones on boots and belts because those are the two slots Blizzard has confirmed will be available in Phase 2.

Everything else is for later phases and whether it actually makes it to those phases in its current form or not is still very much up in the air.

Agreed, though the concept of Purifying Power would have me happy ngl.

There are a good handful that one would look at and question: Wrath, Purifying Power and a couple others (Imp HoW for sure)

But Art of War makes good sense.

the runes are so bad it’s basically 5 runes to support exorcism, a spell that costs a lot of mana and does 3% of my dps.

Well i could imagine many of them are false/fake but with the nature of the gear and Sheath of Light on top of Vengeance/Sanctity Aura/Sader debuff it would scale out better.

Also with the change to Martyr and how it would scale at 40 you would be a mana battery with constant Exorcisms. So just that alone I feel would be good unless all of the Exo runes are bait and switch.

SoM doesn’t even scale with spellpower, if you use sheath of light all the extra sp will only affect exorcism. SoC at least has some sp coefficient.

Good to know.

Actually ive been trying to refind the Coeffs for SoComm and other seals but cant seem to look. Can you send a link if its okay i need some maths.

These are rounded to the closest whole percent. There’s also a small amount of variance for SoR with swing speed, or so I’ve been told: https://imgur.com/a/dMt12cz

Got you, well then by this then one could say the big change they could do to help make these runes work is give higher Coeffs to seals from Spell Power including Martyr.

That doesn’t really make sense. Honestly, that Path of Arthas effect that was datamined day 1, that reduced Holy healing by 50% and increased non-Holy damage dealt by 5% would probably end up being a bigger gain over trying to play straight ret at level 40 with a bunch of spell damage instead of just stacking as much strength & agi/crit chance as you can.

Well if anything as it stands I dont think the rune set up having a bunch for Holy Shock/Exorcism and nothing for lets say Holy Pallies to help heal is accurate.

Id imagine we will see some big changes to the set up but as it is I would be confident we would be okay, its just one of those: oh so these runes are “half power” until 50 type deals and im like: nani?

SoM would need a complete rework to be an effective source of mana regeneration, especially if you’re playing ret with a big, slow 2h.

Currently, it deals 30% weapon damage as additional Holy damage. With the change on the PTR, it’s buffed to 40%. You’ll deal 40% of your weapon damage as additional Holy damage, take 10% of that damage as backlash, and replenish mana to party and raid members within 40yd by 20% of the damage you take.

Currently, 20% of 10% of 30% of your weapon damage - 0.6% - is replenished as mana; it takes 334 damage on a white hit to replenish even 2 mana.
20% of 10% of 40% of your weapon damage - 0.8% - is what it will be in a week. This will be 250 damage on a white hit to replenish 2 mana.
If you’re swinging a weapon with a 3.6 weapon speed, if you’re even doing 500 per white hit, that’s 4 mana per swing. You’ll be restoring a whopping 64 mana per minute, permitting you hit every swing.

Without a total rework, Martyrdom will likely never be ANYWHERE near considerable for mana replenishment.

Honestly, with what was datamined - both runes and gear, and looking at classes besides paladin as well - it’s feeling less and less like we’re only getting belt and boots, and that almost everything, if not everything, will be obtainable in P2, and that the play for DPS paladin will be shockadin. The ret tree at level 40 - along with Sheath of Light - looks like it’ll really only be useful for paladins tanking with a 2H.

  • There’s a ton of plate with spell damage, yet very little with healing; this goes in line with paladins in Classic often wearing cloth armor for the best healing.
  • There’s also a ton of runes for not just Exorcism, but Holy Shock - a talent that requires 31 points in Holy. P2 is capped at level 40, at which point we have… 31 talent points. Zero room for talent points outside of Holy.
  • Holy Shock as an offensive ability only works if you not only are talented into Holy Shock, but if you have a sizeable mana pool and a decent amount of spell crit, with the runes on top of that. Otherwise, you’re spending 31 talent points on a spell that costs a lot of mana, does less damage than Exorcism, has a 30 sec CD only reset by Art of War crits, with a low crit chance itself(going off spell crit), and even if it does crit, it won’t refund mana.

With these caveats around Holy Shock, either a massive amount of what’s datamined is an out of season April Fool’s Day prank, or a lot of it will have to be available in P2.

Either that or they just want to have people playing paladin get essentially no runes of real of value in P2.

Good points and thanks for the math on that.

The factors i was trying to bring in for Martyr is: Vengeance (Double Dip), Sanctity Aura, Two Handed Weapon Specialization.

Ultimately id prefer Command and Divine Storm anyways if im going to be honest.

I added a bunch to my above post in an edit and hadn’t seen that you replied until after I finished. You can look above to see my additional thoughts.

The word is that only belt and boot runes will be available next phase

Well the big give away/hope i can provide is that there is like NOTHING for Holy Paladin and any true Variety if you look closely. Some cool stuff like Wrath or Purifying Power but again 1/2 power because Holy Wrath and Consecration isnt in everyones builds by that point.

The two ill take seriously are Sheath and Guardian for sure, AoW as a possibility. The rest who knows but im hoping the rune set up regardless ends up being good.

Also to add on the “Shockadin” the Infusion of Light rune.

If you’re 31 points in the Holy tree and the play for offensive is shockadin, there’s no reason to not take Consecration.
You don’t have Holy Wrath yet, no, but Holy Wrath is a 1 min CD(reduced to 30 sec with the wrist rune) that costs almost 1.5x the mana as Consecration, or 1.2x the cost of Exorcism and Holy Shock combined, does less ST damage than Exorcism, and has worse spell damage coefficient than Holy Shock, Exorcism, and Consecration. Considering how short fights are, it’s by far the least important part of the toolkit.
(You’re also missing Hammer of Wrath, but that’s just an execute ability; not really an issue to not have yet. Not to mention it contends with the Purifying Power wrist rune, which may be an issue.)
I would think the play, if you want to be an offensive paladin, and all of this is implemented, would be to go down to Holy Shock, take both int/spell dam & str/agi/crit plate, go with a big, slow 2H like you currently do, and melee with Judgment of the Crusader applied, Seal of Righteousness on your weapon, and Crusader Strike, Divine Storm, Exorcism, Holy Shock, Consecration(if multiple targets at least) as active abilities, with Art of War, Infusion of Light, Purifying Power, and Fanaticism to buff the hell out of Exorcism and Holy Shock.
Or if you can’t manage a good amount of crit for melee, Art of War would be swapped out for Guarded by the Light, to make up for a lack of mana refunded with Holy Shock and to get more value out of not critting as much to reset those spells.

This is at least how it looks like it’s intended to go to me. Take that for what it’s worth.

I meant to mention that when I said Holy Shock doesn’t refund mana when it crits offensively in the above message, but it seems I forgot to mention the actual rune. Thanks for catching that.
