Overwolf Client and Addon Management - PLEASE Don't Support This!

Or the thing I think is if they’re contributing to a major rise in account compromises. Still that’s one of the reasons that you can’t charge for addons. Its still Blizzard’s IP.

I would be very interested in this case as lots of people indirectly profit off Blizz’s IP. Twitch streamers, Youtubers, addon devs. I don’t think it could just be them profiting off it they would have to come up with more than that I’d think.

Eventually the Twitch app will update, and the addon section will be removed entirely. Your addons which you already have installed will still be in your folder because they’re already installed, but you will no longer be able to navigate or access that aspect of the twitch app. Essentially, it’ll be nuked off the planet.

 I’m excited for the day I can be free of the twitch client, even if it means losing my addon updater.

I have a open source singularity that I set up just for my wow stuff.

Very lean, no phone home or ads etc.

takes about 10 seconds to boot, updates are tons faster than any curse / twitch / etc and no stuff I don’t want.

I think basic singularity would please many who use managers of any kind.

JMHO based on current iteration of singularity.

Blizz won’t be triggered into action simply because someone is profiting indirectly of Blizz IP. It has to aggravate Blizz as well. Blizz may tolerate or even bless streamers, devs etc who indirectly use their IP (unless they are in danger of their rights being eroded) where they see it is beneficial to their interests. But if they don’t like what a party is doing with their IP they will hunt them down (or attempt to at least) using whatever legal tools are available.

What worries me, is the possibility of daddy Blizz asserting their rights, and negotiating a deal with Overwolf for a percentage of the take in exchange for exclusive access or some such. I think I would have to stop playing. :open_mouth:

I’ll just go back to manually updating add-ons. And using fewer. I use a bunch of Tukui stuff like Elvui, etc. and that has its own update app.

Im surprised how often people update their addons.

Kind of interesting they didn’t negotiate an exclusivity on the Curseforge api when they bought the software. Would that have been subject to the WoW tos?

This thread clearly went places while I was sleeping.

Let’s please try keeping this on-topic, please.

And Overwolf shills need not come here.

legal from 21 and up in the US

It’s ok let them download it and enjoy what the rest of us already know awaits them ahah.

Scraping a website is not illegal, How can some dumb company asks others not to scrap their website. They have no legal basis.

I can scrape curseforge, get all addon download links and put them on a website and there is nothing they can do about it.
Hell, I scraped the wow forums and created the “fix for broken post history” about a year back and Blizz did nothing.

I will be boycotting Overwolf, and anything having to do with them. If that means manually installing addons off GitHub, then so be it.

Nope Nope. No adware(effectively malware), thx and I am NOT paying for add-ons to a game I already pay for.

You mean like many Youtube videos?

Except profiting off YT videos isn’t explicitly against YT’s Terms of Service or EULA.

Addons are supposed to be free and non-profit. You can donate to addon developers if you want to, but doing so should have no impact on the functionality of the addon as it functions in-game itself.

I will NOT be installing the Overwolf client. End of story.

I currently use wowup; it’s fantastic, but it looks like it may well be unuseable once Overwolf does their thing, since sadly, most of the addons won’t be manageable through it.

What options do I have? If I don’t want to download addons from Curseforge manually (I don’t trust Overwolf, since they now own Curseforge, I don’t trust addons on that site). Basically play the game without addons? Play it with addons only available on github? I’m genuinely unclear on what I’ll need to start doing and how and what addons I’ll be able to choose to support.
