i don’t know what’s going on, but today my mcafee is going downright crazy.
it keeps popping up with we’ve blocked a connection and that overwolf is trying to connect to a suspicious site.
5.6k times per mcafee in just october and it’s all overwolf blocking…
what am I supposed to do? i’m not good at the manual adding of add-ons and wow up seems to be having issues keeping add ons up to date…
this is just crazy to me.
You’ll have to add overwolf to the exception list. Refer to Mcafees website. Otherwise you’ll just have to disable mcafee, update addons and enable it again
you… installed mcafee?
well to be honest i also don’t use any addons either

Does it mention the URL Overwolf is trying to connect to?
It’s possible that either McAffee has flagged Overwolf’s server as malicious, but it’s also possible that one of the ad networks it connects to is shady and that’s what’s triggering it. There are several ad brokers that pay more but have little to no oversight over the ads they deliver, which makes them notorious for malvertising. Wowhead and Fandom have used these questionable brokers in the past so I doubt Overwolf is above using them, but at least Wowhead and other sites live inside a frequently updated heavily sandboxed browser where the risk is far lower. Overwolf in comparison is running directly on your machine and is unlikely to use any kind of sandboxing for its ads.

I hate mcafee, I just uninstalled it when I got it in june.
First of all. Uninstall Mcafee. Windows 10 comes with it’s own built in antivirus called Windows Defender, does the same thing as Mcafee and isn’t as useless as Mcafee.
so it was tagging overwolf itself, but I think I figured it out… Overwolf installed some kind of overlay, recording app thing.
anyway, when I uninstalled that video app that was connected to Overwolf, mcafee stopped popping up. so I’m pretty sure it was that it was tagging.
also for those that don’t like mcafee, i don’t have much choice. my husband won’t let us change to anything else. he swears by it and installs it free through some program he has. he’s the tech guy not me so … ya know. lol
well… ok that sucks
but tbh i’ve been runming wow with no addons whatsoever and it works fine. what are the addons you cannot live without?
I’ve been here since 2009, never used a single addon.
I do recommend Malwarebytes too though.
Unless you go to some really sketchy websites, Malware/virus scanners are useless. They cause more problems than they solve. It’s not like the old days where virus’ break your computer. The new goal of malware is to steal your identity while being undetected. So even if you get warnings, it’s probably too late.
That said, I Highly recommend ditching any malware scanners. If you MUST have one, look for one that runs off a boot disk.
